The Interstate Fair & Rodeo is on its way! The Fair Board's Katie Allen says if you haven't purchased a fun pass yet: today might be your day.  The schedule has been changed up a bit this year. There carnival and food vendors will be set up for the entire run. The grandstand events begin with the Freestyle Motorcross, LJ Jenkins Bullriding, two nights of PRCA Rodeo and the events wrap with the Demolition Derby on the final night.

Fun Passes are available online at fairandrodeo.com or you may buy them at the Coffeyville Chamber of Commerce.  Today is the final day tickets are $30.  Tomorrow the price increases to $40.

The online learning program at Coffeyville Community College continues to see growth. Director Brad Webber says they are completing the summer session now, with two sessions on the way for the fall semester.

Webber says you can take care of most of the enrollment in online courses without ever stepping on campus, unless you need to take placement exams or purchase books.

A Coffeyville firefighter requires medical treatment after battling a blaze on Saturday. The fire department was called to the 800 block of West 2^nd Street for a fire in an unoccupied house. Off-duty firefighters and South Coffeyville Fire also responded. The fire was out within a half-hour, but one Coffeyville fireman did suffer heat exhaustion.

He was treated and released from Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

Kansas sees some of the biggest jumps in the price at the pump. The average price for a gallon of gasoline increased 4 cents over the past week, tied for the fifth largest increase in America. Today’s Kansas average is $2.68, which is 51 cents higher than one year ago.

According to AAA Kansas, this week’s Kansas gas price extremes are:

HIGH: Howard (Elk County) – $2.90

LOW: Montezuma (Gray County) – $2.43

An important reminder for those who use the drug store in Caney. Caney Drug will be dealing with a planned electric outage due to system maintenance by Westar tomorrow. The outage is expected to last from 10 o'clock in the morning until 2 pm. During that time frame, Caney Drug will be unable to fill any prescriptions. If you are due for a refill, you might want to get it today or plan on waiting until tomorrow after 2.

The Coffeyville City Commission sets a public hearing for the Fiscal Year 2019 Budget for August 14^th. Meanwhile, the Fiscal Year 2017 Audit gets a clean report from the auditors.

Lead Auditor Meta  Titel of Jarred Gilmore and Phillips provided the report. The public hearing on the 14^th will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The Kansas Juvenile Officers Association honors a southeast Kansas police officer. Arkansas City Master Police Officer Chase Hobart has been named the 2018 School Resource Officer of the Year. The award was presented in Manhattan. Officer Hobart was recognized for his dedication to the youth of Ark City and passion for keeping schools safe.

His peer group also celebrated his commitment to community through programs like Coffee with a Cop, Neighborhood Watch and Popsicle Patrol.

The Chanute Municipal Court office will be closed today. The Chanute Police Department reports phone lines will be open, but they will not be able to accept any payments. The Municipal Court in Chanute plans to reopen for normal business on tomorrow.

The Caney Valley Historical Society receives a sizeable donation from a bank foundation. The Arvest Foundation made a $3,500 contribution to the Historical Society and Museum. Those funds will be used to make necessary building updates and help the historical society continue to fulfill its mission.

The Arvest Foundation seeks to focus its charitable efforts on education, economic development and enhancing the quality of life in communities where Arvest operates.

Kansas license plates are getting a new look. The Kansas Department of Revenue says the new tags for your vehicle will be flat without raised letters or numbers. The new plates will be sent to the address where your vehicle is registered. The Kansas Department of Revenue says there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, you do not have to get a new plate unless your current one is lost, damaged or stolen or you have purchased a vehicle without a tag to transfer. Second, if you're getting a new tag, hold onto your registration sticker until the new plate arrives.

Distribution will begin on August 15^th.

The Highway task force is a group we’ve been talking about a lot in recent news. A group designed to tackle unfinished projects from every KDOT district. Representative Rich Proell and member of the task force says their initial meeting is coming up the beginning of August. The organizational meeting in Topeka on the 6th, the they will circulate the state in every KDOT district for public meetings. Proell encourages attendance and if interested they will have a meeting in Pittsburg on October the 4th. Unfinished roadwork is the main goal of the highway task force that has been set up for our state. Representative Rich Proell these public meetings will be to discuss issues not only for road work but all types of transportation as well.

Coffeyville loses an eatery. The owner of Kansas Buffet Company notified local managers yesterday that when they closed at 8 o'clock last night they would not be re-opening. The restaurant employed around 30 people who are now out of jobs. A member of the local management team tells KGGF News they were blind-sided by the decision.

The restaurant was formerly a Sirloin Stockade, but the name change came after a reported dispute between the franchise owner of a number of locations and the corporate offices.

Nowata authorities arrest a couple for child neglect and child endangerment. Police say they found the couple’s young children living in a home full of dead mice and trash. Police were reportedly called to a disturbance at the home of Jason Jones, Jr. and Ashley Abel when they discovered the situation. When officers arrived, Abel was erratic and appeared to be under the influence of a narcotic. According to officers, Abel allowed officers into the apartment after she said that she didn't know if her children were okay. She later admitted to using and selling drugs.

Her two and four-year-old were found breathing, but unresponsive. The children were taken to a Tulsa hospital where they tested positive for the presence of narcotics. They are expected to survive.

The Wilson County Fair in Fredonia continues today beginning with livestock weigh ins, judging later in the afternoon all wrapped up with rodeo tonight at 8pm. 4 H’s Cherry Nelson KGGF News this weekend is jam packed with activities. Today includes all the weigh ins and judging of poultry and dairy cattle all wrapped up with the rodeo at 8. 4Hs Cherry Nelson says the fair is an easy way to support our area kids, and is just simply a lot of fun. Nelson reminds everyone as well the fair goes until sunday and has a jam packed weekend ahead. Hog show at 8 am Saturday morning, beef show at 5 and the rodeo again kicks off at 8 pm tomorrow night.  Nelson highly encourages your attendance to the Wilson County Fair or any others through our area. It’s great was to see all the projects the kids have been working all year to show off. It’s also just a great night to spend with friends and family.

Two men land in jail after a home is burglarized and hay bales are set on fire. It happened Tuesday night, south of Columbus. Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves says 41-year-old Brian Wells, of Galena, was arrested on a complaints of arson, burglary, criminal damage to property and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The second suspect arrested has been identified at 38-year-old Ronny Piercefield of Galena.

The Galena Police Department arrested Piercefield in another arson-related case in March.

Why teens kill. A training course set up by the Montgomery County Sheriff's office to further educate individuals on spotting mental health issues and reporting them before any tragedy. We talked with Montgomery County Sheriff Bobby Dierks on an issue that continues to be a problem in our country, and in our area. Friday August 3rd, from 9am-4pm Dierks has Author Phil Chalmers in to talk about, why teens kill. Author Phil Chalmers has interviewed over 200 killers ranging all ages. Providing insight to signs you may have never realized, he’ll give training techniques on School Safety and proactive measures, warning signs, prevention and much more. The event is free of charge and Sheriff Dierks wants to see as many people as he can their. Takes place August 3rd from 9am-4pm in the Memorial Hall Auditorium in Independence.

4-H Fair’s are popping up all over South eastern Kansas. We spoke with K-State extensions Barbara Ames and Jacob Weber on fully enjoying your time at the fair, as Ames gives KGGF news a very important tip. Ames can’t stress enough to wash you and your children's hands at the fair. Especially if they have a pacifier or other items near their mouth. Ames says illnesses from contact with animals is avoidable, but happens more than you think. Ames also reminds us it is still summer, and it's easy to get a little distracted enjoying all the fairs offer. Heat levels can potentially rise to dangerous levels so bring extra water as kids are more susceptible to dehydration than adults.

The Humboldt Police Chief has been charged with Domestic Battery. Brian Dillow was arrested on June 27th after deputies were called to his home in Humboldt for a suspected domestic dispute. He appeared in court on the 28th on the arrest charges of domestic battery and criminal damage to property. He was granted release on his own recognizance. The case has been passed on to Coffey County Attorney Christopher B. Phelan.

Dillow is being charges with domestic battery, battery and two counts of criminal damage.

With the closing of the former Arco Building in Independence those tenants are looking for a new place to setup shop. Some like the Montgomery County Community Corrections Juvenile Services are moving to Coffeyville either on a part time or permanent relocation. Others want to stay in Independence. Over the past several months, the city has reached out to the Kansas Department of Revenue to offer space in the Coffeyville City Hall building for the driver’s license office to locate.

The indicated they wish to remain in Independence.

As the summer starts to come to and end so does the Coffeyville Summer Reading Program. Chamber of Commerce's Sam Kudrick says they do still have some events coming up.

Kudrick also says that next week will be the end of the year summer reading awards.

A great week and weekend for fair lovers. The Montgomery County 4-H Fair is underway and Wildcat Extension Office's Katie Townsend says the livestock shows get underway Friday night.

Townsend says the rest of the livestock exhibits will be on Saturday and Sunday which will include dairy goats, dairy cattle, meat goats, sheep and beef cattle.  

The move starts today for Montgomery County Community Corrections Juvenile Services. Coffeyville City Commissioners agree to lease the agency office space on the first level of Coffeyville City Hall-- following the closure of the former ARCO Building. Director Duane Powell says they'll pay $500 a month.

The lease agreement will be month to month for six months. After that, a longer term lease may be negotiated.

Helping Kansas grow. Representative Jim Kelly says the new tax plan is helping them get out of the debt cycle they were stuck in and bring in revenue.

Kelly says with revenue coming in they can focus on the betterment of Kansas which involves improving highways.  The fiscal year for the state of Kansas ended June 30^th.

One man is jailed following yesterday's shooting in Cherokee County. Sheriff David Groves tells KGGF News that 41-year-old Tim Andrew Green, of Galena, was arrested after a search of his home and vehicle. He's being held on allegations of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, criminal use of a weapon, and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. 37-year-old Dustin Baker remains in a Joplin hospital.

Sheriff Groves anticipates more arrests could be made in the case.

We spoke with Montgomery County Action Council Trisha Purdon this week, as she spoke highly of our small business programs for our previous fiscal year as we saw growth all around our county. Our past fiscal year saw 4 new small businesses sign on for loans to be built in our county and Purdon says even with this years goal set high, we continue to increase those numbers as several other business are in the beginning stages of coming to our area. Purdon says it has already been a landmark fiscal year for small businesses, but stresses the consistent cooperation between the northern and southern parts of the county. Purdon states that is a major key in the recent and continual growth in small business and our overall economy.

The Nowata County Commissioners hold a lengthy discussion over E911 services. Lance Terry from the Oklahoma 911 Authority provided several options on how to go about enacting E911 services.  The county has the option share servers with a neighboring county but answer its own calls, keep the entire operation in the county or let a neighboring county handle all dispatching. Terry says all three neighboring counties in Oklahoma—Rogers, Craig and Washington—all have strong 911 infrastructures.

Using Coffeyville, Kansas as a partner was also discussed for the northern part of the county.

A September 6^th date is set for a bond election for USD 445. Coffeyville Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Craig Correll says the facilities committee has spent over two years considering their options. He says they want to make renovations to Field Kindley and Roosevelt Middle School, both buildings are nearing 100-years of use.  The $25.8-million ask will include projects to make the buildings more accessible. The district would like to add a FEMA-approved shelter.

The plan would also include additional parking and traffic flow around all buildings.

The Licensed Practical Nursing Program at Coffeyville Community College earns a 100% passage rate. The CCC Nursing Program has recently

incorporated a bridge process for licensed Paramedics looking to become a RN. And, articulation agreements are in place with several universities

for those wishing to further their education and obtain a Bachelor's level nursing degree.

The LPN program is ranked #5 in the state of Kansas. 

New ballistic vests arrive at the Coffeyville Police Department. The vests are worn on the outside of an officer's uniform, allowing them to be removed when an officer is writing up reports at the station. They can also be put back on quickly if an officer is called out. The vests are made by Point Blank Enterprises.

The vests also reduce back strain by spreading the 25 pounds of police equipment worn by an officer across the upper body rather than having to use the older, leather gun belt system.

A Galena man remains in critical condition at a Joplin hospital, following a shooting yesterday afternoon. Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves says his detectives are investigating. He says it appears the man was physically assaulted before the shooting. It happened just north of Galena.

Sheriff Groves says they are questioning a number of people and would like to talk to anyone who may know something about the case.

A home on South Cedar sustains over $15,000 in damage following a Saturday morning house fire. When Coffeyville Fire Department crews arrived, flames were visible from the porch area. All occupants were safely out of the house. Off-duty fire personnel and the South Coffeyville Fire Department crews were able to contain the blaze within minutes.

The cause of the fire is listed as undetermined and remains under investigation.

A three vehicle crash yesterday morning leaves one person dead south of Burlington. The Kansas Highway Patrol reports 36-year-old Kelly Leon Minor of Neosho Falls, southbound on US 75, had stopped to turn left onto K-58. 80-year-old William Castle of Clearwater failed to stop for Minor's vehicle, striking it from behind before crossing the center and crashing head-on into a semi driven by Jason Brammer of Frankfort.

Castle died in the crash.

A new idea has come across the legislative board as we spoke with Kansas representative from Independence Jim Kelly on a new program is being designed to make Kansas less of a “flyer over state.” Land In Kansas, the new program to promote large scale industries to move to our areas. Kelly says he thinks Montgomery County in particular will benefit from the program as we have a wide range of areas and businesses that attract larger industries to not only move here, but grow and strengthen the economic footprint. Attracting larger scale industries also attracts other business that may work in connection with the industry.

Feeling like summer is flying by? We are already in the middle of July and  to make it seem faster Coffeyville Community College is starting their fall courses in just one month. CCC’s Yvonne Hull says if your interested to give CCC a try. Whether your looking to start a new career, or are just looking to continue getting credits even if you attend elsewhere CCC is the place for you. Hull says enrollment for fall courses is now open, for more information you can call her at 620-252-7095. Hull also wanted to bring up the opening home football game for the Red Ravens has been rescheduled for Thursday August 23rd and is their Donor Awareness Game at Veterans Stadium here in Coffeyville.

Coffeyville Police respond to a local business after a brick is thrown through a front window.  The vandalism was discovered around 6:30 this evening at Utopia. In a post on social media, the owners indicated nothing was taken from the coffee shop.  The front window is being boarded up and they plan to re-open Monday morning.  

Anyone with information about about the incident is asked to contact Coffeyville Police at 620-252-6160.

A two-vehicle crash at NW 100th and Highway 160, west of Columbus Friday morning claims two lives.  The preliminary investigation conducted by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, indicates a 2014 Harley Davidson motorcycle was westbound on Highway 160 when a car pulled onto the highway and the two vehicles collided.  The driver of the motorcycle, 42-year-old David Brewer and his passenger, 41 year-old Stacey Brewer, both of Riverton, were wearing their helmets, but died due to injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of the car, 20-year-old Cheyenne Hartman of Columbus, was not injured.

You fish where the fish are and the same can be said for criminals. The easier a neighborhood or target is to hit the more often thefts can occur. Independence Police Chief Jerry Harrison says this can be prevented by parking in a well lit area and removing valuables from sight.

Harrison says a lot of time crimes come down to risk and if the reward isn't worth it then the crime won't be committed.

It's going to be another hot one.  The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory in effect until 8 p.m. Heat index values could top 109-degrees across southern Kansas. That creates a very real health threat for residents who are outside or work in un-air conditioned environments. You're advised to drink plenty of cool water and take frequent breaks in the shade or under the AC. If you feel overcome by the heat, you may need to call 911.

Conditions like the ones we are seeing today come with an increased risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The Library Director for the City of Caney is relieved of her duties. The library board taking that action this week. City Administrator Fred Gress says Chris Bannon had been on administrative leave during an audit of library finances.   The irregularities found – according to the audit report – included late payment of payroll taxes to the Internal Revenue Service, misuse of the library's credit card, and violation of the state's budget law may having expenditures in excess of general fund revenues.

Library Assistant Jennifer Rosson will be  overseeing library operations in the interim.

As the City of Coffeyville prepares for it huge milestone next year they Chamber of Commerce has already started planning the party. Director Candi Westbrook says they need a couple of things to help make everything great.

Westbrook says they've kicked things off with a logo contest so all those creative people get out there and start designing.

There are other options. As a task force gets to work to try to understand and reduce the number of suicides especially among teens. Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt says leaders in education, mental health, law enforcement and public safety leaders have already started meeting.

Schmidt says these leaders have partnered with Tower Mental Health Foundation.

Progress is made into the investigation of a fire at one of the oldest businesses in Miami. Miami Police have arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with the fire that was set at Anders Shoes earlier this month. The store was reportedly burglarized twice before the arson fire. The store is owned by 103-year-old Dena Ander.

The suspect faces complaints of burglary, possession of methamphetamine, marijuana and paraphernalia, concealing stolen property and arson.

We're heading into the danger zone.  Montgomery County is under a heat advisory until 8 o'clock this evening. Heat indices could exceed 108-degrees across southern Kansas. The excessive heat puts those who work outside or in non-air conditioned environments at risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. You're advised to put off strenuous activities if possible. Otherwise, boost your water consumption and take frequent breaks to cool down. Keep in mind, temperatures inside vehicles can turn deadly very quickly.

Never leave you children or pets in your car. Check on your neighbors and relatives.

The Primary Election Cycle heads into the home-stretch. The Kansas Primary Election will be on Tuesday, August 7^th. Montgomery County Clerk Charlotte Scott Schmidt says early voting begins today and you can request a ballot by mail.

You may vote in the County Clerk's Office during regular business hours. They have voting booths set up for your privacy. 

As you head out to the lake this summer you want to be on the lookout for snakes, especially copperheads. Fall River Lake Park Manager Kim Jones says if you do happen to get bitten to call 911 immediately.

Jones says to watch out for high populated areas like rock banks and piles of debris.

The planned closure of the former ARCO Building in Independence has tenants looking for new space to occupy. Community Corrections Juvenile Services Director Duane Powell says they are looking at locations throughout the county, including the basement of Coffeyville's City Hall.

The owner of the building sent a letter to those working out of the building on Friday informing them they would have 30-days to move out.

Having to replace four starters can be tough for any basketball coach. Coffeyville Community College Assistant Women's Coach Anita Walker says she's confident about the players returning and the new recruits coming in.   Head Coach Stephen Harrell will be in his third year as head coach and this will be Coach Walker's second.

They both look to improve upon last year where they lost in the second round of the Region 6 tournament.

The former Coffeyville City Manager heads west. Kendal Francis has been named the City Administrator for Great Bend, Kansas. The city council there approved his appointment on a vote of 8-0 this week. Francis resigned his job in Coffeyville last March. His contract expires the end of August.

He should begin work in Great Bend within two weeks.

The Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas opens in a new location today. The new clinic is located at 2051 N. State Street in Iola. A grand opening celebration was held yesterday at the facility.

CHC-SEK offers medical, dental, and behavioral health services at 11 different locations across southeast Kansas.

It could be another year before Tyson announces if a processing plant will be constructed in Coffeyville. Montgomery County Action Council's Trisha Purdon says a group from Coffeyville recently visited Tyson in Springdale, Arkansas. She says they learned more about the start up process.

Once an announcement is made, should Tyson located in Coffeyville, it would take about a little over two years to construct the plant.

In just over a month we will have very critical elections statewide and nationally as we vote in returning or new representatives and governor for the state of Kansas. We spoke with senator Dan Goddard as he can’t stress enough how important your vote is. Goddard also says notionally we will be voting in a 2nd district congress member and notes that the education funding dispute is at the top of the list next legislative session, as it did not pass the supreme court for adequate funding.

An investigation is underway in Chanute after an elderly resident walked into his home and was confronted by an intruder. Chanute Police are investigating the incident which occurred on South Rutter Street. The suspect is described as having a dark complexion and shaggy hair. He may have been driving a white, four-door truck. A reward of $1,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person committing the crime. Anyone with information may call the Chanute Police Department at 620-431-5244.

During this time patrols have increased in the area around the neighborhood where the incident took place.

The Independence Corporate Office building, formerly known as the Arco Building, will close its doors on Sunday, Aug. 12. Bulding Owner Tim Janak notified all tenants via a letter of the building's closure. The loss of the Department of Children and Families office this week triggered Janak's decision to close the building. Janak says "With the loss of DCF from the Arco Building, it is clear that it is no longer financially and logistically viable to keep the Arco Building open and operating,".

Janak's letter to the tenants served as a 30-day notice of the building's closure.

Erie pays tribute to old soldiers and sailors this weekend. It is the oldest, continuous Old Soldiers and Sailors Reunion in its 144^th year. Senator Dan Goddard will be attending tonight's free bean feed.

There will also be a concert on Main Street tonight with food, a beer garden, craft show and fireworks. A parade steps off Saturday morning at 10.  The reunion also features a baby contest, 5-K Run, and an antique engine and car show.

A Former Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper receives 9 months in prison for violating a person's civil rights through the use of excessive force. James Carson, who was employed with the Montgomery County Department of Corrections and Labette County Sheriff’s Department, pleaded guilty to one count of violating civil rights in his capacity as a law enforcement officer. In his plea, he admitted he used unreasonable force against a man he arrested. Carson conducted a lawful arrest and then transported the man to the Labette County Jail, where at least five other law enforcement officials were present. As Carson removed the man from the patrol vehicle and escorted him into the booking area, the suspect’s hands were cuffed behind his back. Without warning, Carson kicked the legs out from underneath the arrested suspected, causing the suspect to fall onto his back onto the floor. Carson admitted in court that he used force against the suspect for the purpose of punishment and not for a legitimate law enforcement purpose.

As part of the plea agreement, Carson agreed to surrender his law enforcement credentials and never again accept any employment related to law enforcement.

We remain under a heat advisory until 8 pm. It's a good idea to limit outdoor activities and stay hydrated. Coffeyville Friends of Animals Becky Barnhart says our pets also need a little extra consideration.   She says extra food and fresh water are needed if your pets are outside.

Barnhart says make sure they have some shade and a kiddie pool can be a great way for dogs to cool off.

A roadwork task force was formed awhile back to tackle unfinished roadwork around the state of Kansas and a couple here in Montgomery County. KDOT’s Wayne Gudmundson spoke to the Independence commissioners as he needs to know if the 160-169 project is still a priority. The commissioners approved the measure as they say, due to the high number of fatalities something needs to be done. Gudmundson said the design is an overpass and is optimistic that we will receive the funding to do so. Just as Coffeyville and Montgomery County commissioners, Independence approved the measure. Gudmundson says why would we be receiving the go ahead on the planning of right aways and utility relocation if they weren’t seeming to make it a priority Gudmundson wanted to stress again that this approval does not mean we get the funding. It just acknowledges Independences approval of the roadwork. All 3 commissioners are adamant about fixing a very dangerous intersection.

A Coffeyville teenager who was pulled from the water at the Coffeyville Aquatic Center on the 4th of July has died.  18 year old Juan Manuel Donis-Francisco passed away at a Tulsa hospital where he had been on life support since being life flighted from CRMC on the afternoon of July 4th.  Donis-Francisco was a 2018 graduate of Field Kindley High School.  An account has been set up at Community State Bank to

help the family with funeral expenses.

What's it going to cost me and what is my money going to? Those are the two questions USD 445 Superintendent Craig Correll say most voters have when deciding on a bond issue.

Correll says he was hoping their was going to be a sales tax question to go along with this bond to lessen the burden on home owners, but the Coffeyville City Commission voted not to allow it.

Young Professionals of Independence Summer Speaker Series is coming up for the month of July. Director of the Chamber of Commerce Lisa Wilson says the President of Commercial Bank Chuck Goad will be the speaker.

Wilson says the event will be at Big Cheese Pizza on Tuesday July 17^th. Networking will start at 11:30, lunch at 11:45 and the speaker will start at noon.

Recycling continues to grow in Independence. Director of the Chamber of Commerce Lisa Wilson wants to remind everyone that they've added the Tuesday recycling on top of they recycling done on the first Saturday of every month.

Wilson says the drop offs are very easy you just pull up to the recycling center and someone comes out and unloads your vehicle for you.

The 30th Annual Independence Chamber Golf Classic is this Saturday. Director of the Chamber of Commerce Lisa Wilson says the best thing about their tournament is everyone is a winner.

Wilson says the weather should be good for the classic and they will be down around noon.

If you've never experienced a fair before Wildcat Extension District's Julie Traxson says the Cherryvale Youth Fair is a good one to go to.

Traxson says the fair is already underway and will run until Saturday. Events include a livestock show, an adult baking competition and much more.  Proceeds from the baking competition auction will go to the Levi Clubine Medical Fund and the Andrew Metcalf Memorial Fund.

Keeping our tax dollars within our city limits is vital to the growth of Coffeyville, with population on the rise we need to continue to attract new businesses. Candi westbrook with the Coffeyville Chamber of Commerce stresses to spend your money here now to attract the shops you really may really prefer later. Westbrook also believes the presence of new businesses and local competition is not always a bad thing. It can motivate some businesses that may have been complacent for a while thus further bettering our economy. She stresses in order to gain more of the shops you prefer, we need to sustain and treat our existing businesses well. She says we all have our favorite stores and shops in a different town or want to save a few bucks but if you can, keep your money in our town, and shop locally.

The National Weather Service in Wichita issues a heat advisory, which is in effect from 1 pm this afternoon to 8 pm Friday. Heat index values around 105 degrees are expected during the afternoon and early evening hours today and Friday. Exposure to the heat without a way to cool down, could lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and possibly heat stroke. You're advised to take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Try to schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments, drink plenty of fluids and stay in an air conditioned room if possible.

It is also a good idea to check up on relatives and neighbors. Temperatures within vehicles can become lethal in a few minutes. Never leave children or pets in vehicles.

The Arkansas City Police Department needs help identifying four people. The four were involved in an incident at Wal-Mart in Ark City at the end of June. Police would like to put some names with each individual. Anyone with information may contact Officer Horinek at 620-441-4444.

A Coffeyville Police Officer finds himself on the wrong side of the law. Coffeyville Police were called to a home on South Highland last night regarding a domestic disturbance. Officers on the scene requested support from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office when they realized the suspect was Officer Jason Davis. Deputies arrested him on a complaint of domestic battery.

Davis who has worked as a police officer in Coffeyville since 2006 is on unpaid administrative leave while the investigation is underway.

The Blood Drive returns to Coffeyville next week on Tuesday and Wednesday at the First Baptist Church.We spoke with Jan Hale with the American Red Cross as she gives us some tips on how to get more information and make your donation go a little quicker by getting a rapid pass.To get a rapid pass she says you can visit their website redcross.org or download the app. The drive on Tuesday it goes from 11:45 to 6:00 PM, and on Wednesday from 8:30 AM to 12:30. She stresses the importance of donating and to double up on your water intake before you do so. Something so important yet so easily overlooked is the gift of giving blood. Hale can’t stress enough how important it is to donate blood. She says you don’t realize it until someone directly involved with you needs it, but there is always someone, somewhere that needs your help with the use of your blood.

A Coffeyville woman pleaded guilty to stealing $150,000 from a customer at a bank where she worked, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said.

Phyllis Lanning, 61, Coffeyville, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud. She admitted that while she worked for Condon National Bank in Coffeyville, Kan., she created and mailed falsified documents in order to conceal the fact she stole $150,000 from a customer’s account. She diverted legitimate monthly statements to a postal box in Bartlesville, Okla., that she controlled. She prepared counterfeit statements and mailed them to the owner of the account. The theft was discovered after the owner of the account died and family members took control of the account.

Sentencing is set for September 24. She faces a penalty of up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000. 

The Independence Driver’s License Office will be closed for the rest of the day.  The closure is the result of climate control issues that continue to plague the former Arco Building.  Wait time without the air conditioning can be up to an hour and a half.  The office will reopen once the issue is fixed.  

There is a location for for license renewal at the Chautauqua County Courthouse in Sedan.  

Coffeyville has been trying to figure out who is behind the group known as the BMX Bandits. Believed to be the ones behind the recent break ins around town,  we spoke with C.P.D Police Chief Kwin Bromley on the matter as he says they have made a few arrests. Even with the arrests being made, Chief Bromley highly recommends you go and get your business a security camera or system. Keep your business or residence well lit, and always have the C.P.D be the first call as their average response time is within one minute. Bromley says sometimes it’s as simple as investing in a light around your business to help them solve these crimes. Bromley also states everyone is  innocent until proven guilty, but since the arrests have been made there have been no breaks ins around town.

A single vehicle crash results in the death of a Pryor, Oklahoma, man. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says 24-year-old Wesley Shane Bowline was eastbound on Kenwood Road, east of Salina, when he failed to negotiate a curve, rolled his car and struck a tree.

The trooper who responded to the crash detected an odor of alcohol. 

Kansas Representative Doug Blex says he is pleased that the Kansas State Department of Education may be listening. The Independence Republican is pleased that the school redesign program doesn't just focus on prepping students for university.  Blex says there are some really good jobs that need people with the right skills.

He says allowing students to go from classroom to work will be positive for everyone.

Coffeyville turns out for the Summer Celebration.  Hundreds of families spent time at Walter Johnson Park for the Summer Celebration.  The day included lots of fun activities for all ages, a car show, music by Retro Rockerz and Backroads Band, and the homemade ice cream from Dearing Christian Church. The fireworks display that capped the evening lasted for around 30-minutes.

Organizer Gail Smith says he and the others who put on the event each year appreciate all the support they get from local businesses and the community.  Smith is promising an even bigger fireworks show next year.

Recent news from Coffeyville Community College saw allegations of sexual assault in a males dorm room. Coffeyville Police Department is looking into the matter as Chief Kwin Bromley says they are cooperating to the fullest. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call CPD at 620-252-6160 or Detective Kastler at 620-252-6145. Those wishing to remain anonymous may provide information to the Crime Tip Hotline at 620-252-6133. Other ongoing investigations include a an aggravated assault charge to an individual who fired a weapon during an argument. Police Chief Kwin Bromley says they were able to question and charge the individuals with the help of a facebook video. Bromley says the cameras made it easy to identify a few individuals but stresses cooperation. As another arrest was made later on the matter, as an individual was charged with a felony level obstruction of a police investigation. Bromley says they were thankful that no other damage or weapons were used in the incident. He also notes that it may seem like common sense, but firing a weapon into the air can still potentially cause serious damage as it still needs to fall.

The Director of Community Corrections for Montgomery County announces plans to retire. Kurtis Simmons says he has been employed with the department for 34-years. He has selected three members of the corrections board to make a recommendation to county commissioners for his replacement.

Simmons says his retirement will be effective September 1^st.  His last day will be August 24th.

A summer STEM class put on by the ICC Fablab from July 16th through August 3rd is coming to the ICC West Campus. A course for girls in grades 6th through 8th emphasizing Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in very hands on activities. Joanne Smith with the Fablab says with a sizable grant from verizon the girls will be exposed to alot of great technology and may get to keep some of their own. Smith also says for parents that don’t have transportation they will provide transportation to the classes if needed. A course emphasizing in a lot of hands on activities, but Smith says that's not all they’ll be doing as they will also have a weekly field trip. Smith says they still have room and to register by calling 620-330-3006. The classes are no cost and they take place from July 16 through the 3rd of August at the ICC west campus. Classes go from 9-4 and Smith says girls with great attendance will receive something special at the end.

Many Kansans are among those getting away for the holiday. AAA-Kansas expects us to be a part of over 3-million-people in our region taking trips through July 8^th. The travel group says that's a 4 percent increase from last year and the largest number of travelers since 2007. Most Kansans are taking road trips, despite gasoline prices being about 60-cents higher than one year ago.   Many are traveling to Branson, Colorado, Kansas City, Oklahoma City and Dallas.

The travel group has also been booking flights to Vegas, Orlando, Alaska and Cancun.

A single car crash leaves one person dead. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports that 73-year-old Dorothy Morland of Rose was eastbound on Scenic State Highway 412, just west of Rose. For an unknown reason, she departed the right side of the roadway, overcorrected to left of center and then overcorrected to the right, causing her to lose control of her car. She was ejected after it overturned two times.

She died at a Pryor hospital.

It is something many have wanted for Coffeyville for a long time. A paved walking-biking trail will soon be constructed. The Coffeyville Community Enhancement Foundation agrees to award a contract to Jeff Graham Construction. The City's Thomas Osborn says a Brownsfield Clean-Up Grant will cover the cost of the trail, making it a bit longer than originally planned.

The grant was for $160,000. The bids for construction all came in at $100,000 which has allowed the extension of the trail around the former Sherwin Williams facility.

The CCC summer theater program is a great way for kids ages 5-18 to show off their love for theater and be apart of their local community college. First year Director Ryan Mahannon says he loves this program and thinks it’s a great first step to getting CCC’s theater back to what it was. The summer theater program at Coffeyville Community College has their next event coming up on the 6th of July. Director Ryan Mahannon says, next up is the Addams family performance and explains how to attend. Just like last time the event is free of charge but due to the amount of people last performance they have started reserving tickets for general admission seating for the event. For more information Mahannon says to head to the CCC website. He says the spring performance of Beauty and the Beast was so big it was challenge getting so many people through, so the ticketing should help efficiency.

A number events planned for the Summer Celebration in Coffeyville this weekend. Organizer Gail Smith says the best part about the event is its free.

Wal-Mart donates dozens of fire extinguishers to Montgomery County. Emergency Management Director Rick Whitson says, in exchange, he has provided a fire extinguisher safety class for the store's employees.  Meanwhile, there are many things that can happen in a community that could create chaos.  Whitson says, in such an event, weather or violence, the state can offer support.

Whitson says it will give everyone an opportunity to learn how to share responsibilities and see what support is available. The scenario planned for the day will be a tornado response.

A pedestrian is killed in Ottawa County, Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports that 37-year-old Michael Logan suffered massive injuries in the incident. The Wyandotte man was reportedly struck by a truck while standing in the southbound lane of Oklahoma Highway 10. The crash occurred around eleven o'clock Friday evening. The driver of the pickup that struck him was 80-year old Ida Hashbarger of Wyandotte.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is looking into why Logan was in the roadway.

The City of Coffeyville announces some schedule changes due to the Independence Day holiday. City Clerk Cindy Price says all offices will be closed on Wednesday.

Also, there will be no residential trash service on the 4^th. Price says Wednesday's route will run on Thursday. Thursday's on Friday. And, they'll catch up with Friday's collection on Saturday.

The Humboldt Chief of Police is out of jail after being arrested. Brian Dillow appeared in court on charges of domestic battery and criminal damage to property. Allen County authorities say Dillow was released on his own recognizance.

The police chief was arrested last week after deputies were called to his home in Humboldt. 

Vaude in the Ville is back! A variety show taking place at the CCC theatre featuring local performers all while fundraising the Midland Theatre. Vaude In The Ville Returns to Coffeyville this July 6th and one of the event organizers Lisa Sheck says this year they have one of their best lineup of performers. Tickets are 25 dollars and are available at the chamber, public library or at the door. Sheck also wanted to note the after party will be held at the liberty Center at Sleep Inn and suites. The event is July 6th again at the Spencer Rounds Theatre. Sheck encourages everyone to come support local talent and the Midland Theatre as they hope to one day host the event in the historic downtown Theater.
