A job fair in Coffeyville at the Rec Center from 1:00pm until 5:00pm. Kansas Works Laci Bohr says they've teamed up with Southeast Kansas Works, Northeast Oklahoma Works, Coffeyville Chamber of Commerce and the Montgomery County Action Council.

Bohr says there will also be opportunities for apprenticeship programs and there will be food trucks set up and chances to win some prizes.

Candy is one of everyone's favorite parts of Halloween. Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine Stan McBride says you'll want to keep candy away from the four legged members of the family.

McBride says when it comes to chocolate dark chocolate is more dangerous than milk chocolate or white chocolate.

The Coffeyville Board of Commissioners are accepting applications for persons interested in serving on the City Planning Commission and CRMC Board of Trustees. The deadline to receive applications is 5:00pm Wednesday, December 5^th. All applications will be reviewed by the Commissioners and appointments made at the December 11^th meeting. Applicants must attend the meeting to be appointed. Applications for board appointments may be picked up in the City Clerk’s Office. In addition, applications are available on the city's website. CITY PLANNING COMMISSION – This seven-member board has two position available for three-year terms serving to January 1, 2023.  One position is for a resident of the City of Coffeyville, and the second is for an individual who lives outside of but within three miles of the city limits. This Board meets the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.

COFFEYVILLE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER BOARD OF TRUSTEES – This seven-member board has two positions available for three-year terms serving to January 1, 2022.  Applicants must be residents of the City of Coffeyville.  The Board of Trustees meets the last Wednesday of every odd-numbered month at 4 p.m.

Crawford County Sheriff's Deputies arrest a Pittsburg man accused of ramming a stolen car into another man's vehicle and then shooting at him. The incident happened on Monday. Deputies responded to rural Pittsburg after a Frontenac resident reported that a man shot at him. According to the man, the altercation began in Frontenac, where 44-year-old Tony Corbitt rammed his vehicle and shot at him before driving away. The man was uninjured. Authorities say the Chevrolet Corbitt was driving when they pulled him over had front end damage and was reported stolen. Deputies say they didn't find a weapon in the vehicle and the investigation is still ongoing.

Corbitt was arrested on three warrants for probation violation, theft and aggravated assault.

The Independence Trunk or Treat begins tonight at 6PM on Penn avenue in downtown area. Director of the Chamber of Commerce Lisa Wilson encourages your attendance as she says it’s always a great memory making event for the whole family. She mentioned many characters, costumes and mascots in attendance to take pictures with, including McGruff the Crime Dog and Fire Pup, Minions, the I.C.C Pirates and I.H.S Bulldog. Wilson advises participants to enter Penn avenue from either Laurel, Myrtle or by Anne Maes. She says there is no particular line, wants everyone to attend to show off your costumes, have fun and load up on candy. The event will feature 60 trunks stocked full of candy, starting with the firetruck horn at 6PM until 7:30 this evening.

A Cherokee Nation District 11 meeting will be this evening at 6:00pm at the Cherokee Community Building, 215 Oklahoma street, in South Coffeyville. Doors will open 5 :00pm. It is hosted by the Deputy Speaker of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Councilor Victoria Mitchell Vazquez. Special Guest Principal Chief Bill John Baker.

Effective January 1, 2019, Coffeyville Community College will be increasing its tuition and fees from $72 per credit hour to $85 per credit hour for local and in-state residents. Out of area rates will be adjusted accordingly. CCC will remain the lowest per credit hour institution in the state according to the rates displayed on each institutions individual websites.

The Board of Trustees have made a conscious effort to be good stewards of the institutions resources and reduce the tax burden of stakeholders. Implementation of this increase will address both of these initiatives.

On average, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year. Independence Police Chief Jerry Harrison says there are precautions parents can take to help protect their kids.

Harrison says kids under the age of 12 should be accompanied by an adult and he also encourages kids to go out in groups.

Cherryvale City Administrator Brooke Carroll has been appointed to lead the Independence Community College's upcoming strategic planning process as their current plan will end this year. Carroll will help start a five-year strategic plan for ICC working together with planning committees and focus groups.

Carroll says as an ICC alumnus herself she is pleased to have this opportunity to serve the college and the Independence community through this important process.

After winning the state championship in May the Caney Valley FFA Poultry Judging team headed to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis to compete. With three members of the team placing in the top 30 individually it was good enough to finish sixth in the nation. Emma Pool finished 14^th, Kaygan Shull 20^th, Tiffany Egan 27^th and Venus McMahan placed in the silver division.

The placing earns them an all-expense paid trip to Atlanta in February and Pool $400 for finishing in the top 15.

There are several reasons for the changes being made to the Kansas License plate. Representative Rich Proehl says it being a cheaper option is just one of them.

Proehl also encourages you to get a Ktag for turnpike travel as they can be used in Oklahoma and Texas and soon Colorado.

A very eventful time of year for the city of Independence, with Neewalloh wrapping up, they now shift their focus to the Veterans Day of Honor. Director of the Independence Chamber of Commerce Lisa Wilson says the event is coming up in early November. The event will have a veterans breakfast at Riverside Park followed by a veterans Walk of Honor. From their it will start the Family 5k Fun Run/ Walk. Cost will be 20 dollars, for veterans it is 10 dollars with registration beginning that morning. The Veterans Day of Honor celebration in Independence will be on Saturday November 10th. Lisa Wilson with the Chamber explains it will be a very meaningful day, with plenty of things to take part in.Wilson also mentioned they have brought back their Veterans Day T Shirts available to purchase. Those proceeds will go towards supplying the town with more brackets to support the banners displayed for the holiday, as Wilson says they plan to extend those down West Main.

A boil water advisory is now in effect for water customers of the City of Caney.  The advisory was posted this afternoon by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.  It will remain in effect until the conditions which place the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be adequately resolved.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

• Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation, or use bottled water.
• Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.
• Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
• Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.
• If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.

Water is flowing back into the water system in Caney.  City Manager Fred Gress tells KGGF News that residents need to continue conservation efforts, noting it will take about four hours for the system to get back to capacity.  

Meanwhile, crews are working on a couple of electronic components at the water plant that are creating some issues.  

Caney residents are being asked to conserve water.  City Manager Fred Gress tells KGGF News that city crews have been dealing with a major water leak since about 4:30 this morning.  The leak has drained much of the town’s water supply.  Valves have been shut down throughout the system as the city works to repair the leak. 

All water customers of Caney should limit usage.  Gress indicates there will be noticeable low water pressure. 

The 10th Annual Cops N’ Rodders Car Show takes place this Saturday starting at 8AM in the morning in the Autozone parking lot in Independence across from Memorial Hall. One of the founders of the event Truman Kolb says, the U.S. Honor Flag will be in attendance. The Honor Network was founded on the conviction that every person who is committed in service to our communities and country deserves the support of every single American, and that an increase in American patriotism is vital in keeping our great nation united. You can come and see the flag and learn about itss journey during the Car Show.  The portion of the proceeds will go towards the US honor Flag as well as Kolb had mentioned they wanted to try and set up a community fund for the area. The event is free of charge, there will be door prizes, a raffle giveaway and concessions, and if your early enough can drive in the parade.

Select Red Raven sports games will now be available to be watched through an on-line, live streamed video service.  The service is being made possible through a partnership between Coffeyville Community Collage and KGGF, KUSN and KQQF Radio.  

The service will be available for Red Raven home games in football, basketball, volleyball and soccer.  Those who wish to watch the Red Ravens on-line, along with play-by-play audio will be able to do so by going to kggfradio.com and clicking on the Sports tab near the top of the home page.  Then in the drop down menu that opens select CCC TV.

The live stream service will begin with tonight's CCC-Garden City football game at 7:00pm.

Kansans who need a photo ID before the November 6th election can visit any driver’s license office, jump to the front of the line, and get one for free. The Kansas Department of Revenue says that to ensure the ID is free, residents should specifically state they need it for voting. The cost for ID cards normally is $22. Director of Vehicles David Harper says this service is always available and it’s important for us to remind voters that it’s an option ahead of the November 6th general election.

Cops N’ Rodders returns for their 10th annual car show this weekend in Independence. It will take place in the Auto Zone parking lot this Saturday as Kyle Hand with the Montgomery County Sheriff's office says it’s free of charge. Registration kicks off around 8 AM and if you're their early enough you have the option to drive your car in the Grand Parade. Cops N’ Rodders will also have a raffle give away, door prizes and concessions and have a few great ideas for what to do with the proceeds made. The proceeds made are going towards the U.S. Honor flag, and  community fund, which may supply families with Turkeys for Thanksgiving or that are just in need. The event is free, everyone is welcome as registration gets started at 8 AM.

Columbus residents are asked to consider what their health is worth. A bond question will be on the November ballot to help finance a multi-million-dollar wellness center. Columbus Recreation Commission's Liz Simpson says the area ranks poorly on health statistics. The center would offer a walking track, gym and fitness programs.

She says a million-dollars of the price tag would come from private donations. The remaining $2.4 million would come from the bond.

We are still in October but some local stores are already getting in the Christmas spirit. Director of the Coffeyville Chamber of Commerce Candi Westbrook says starting in early November shopping locally might pay off.

Westbrook says their first big Christmas Bucks giveaway will be December 7^th the night of the parade.

A couple of buildings with the Coffeyville Recreation Commission being dedicated to two people who have given a lot. CRC's Shelly Stanley says they've both given over 25 years of service.

The Rec Center Dedication will be on Friday November 2^nd at 10:00am and the Concession Stand Dedication will be on Thursday November 8^th at 2:00pm.

Two southeast Kansas residents get arrested in the Bartlesville are for transporting drugs and firearms through Washington County. Tiffany Edwards of Fredonia and Aaron Johnson of Independence appeared in Washington County court yesterday. Edwards faces charges of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, false impersonation to create liability, and carrying a loaded firearm.

Johnson was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

The K-State extension offices Keith Martin explains that they will be hosting a Grazing School coming up this Saturday. Takes place at the Edna Community Senior Center, taking tours as well as listening to a long list of guest speakers. The course will feature many guest speaker from Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri Ag. markets. They will also take a tour of farms around the area that have focused on different Grazing styles. The course takes place at the Edna Community Senior Center in Edna Kansas, starts at 9 AM this Saturday with registration. Being past the final prepaid register date, Martin explains there is still room so call, 620-784-5337 and you’ll pay your 20 dollar registration fee at the door.

Halloween is today, which means multiple opportunities to snag some candy. Director of the Coffeyville Chamber of Commerce Candi Westbrook says there will be several places in the area doing Trunk-or-Treat.

Westbrook says if you have anymore locations that will be hosting a trunk-or-treat or need anymore information about one to call the chamber at 251-2550.

32 food stands opening up today for the Annual Neewollah Celebration in Independence. Director of the Chamber of Commerce Lisa Wilson says they will be spread out all over the downtown area. There is a map for all food vendors.

Wilson says the carnival is also opening up today and then the parades and performances will start tomorrow starting with the DooDah Parde and followed with some more family friendly parades.  After the Grand Parade on Saturday the Cops and Rodders Car Show will take place in the AutoZone parking lot.

The Ronald O. Thomas Dog Park opens for business in Pittsburg. The area also is home to new pickle ball and basketball courts and a new sensory garden. The Thomas foundation donated $50,000 to build the pet play area.  The fenced area offers more than 26,000 sq. ft. of play space and feature two separate areas for small and large dogs. The park also includes play equipment, such as ramps, tunnels and jump hoops.  The dog park fits into the city’s Mid-City Renaissance project, which calls for additional recreation spaces.

Grants from the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas and Everybody Plays Committee helped finance the other improvements.

Hitting the links at Hillcrest Country Club will cost a bit more for golfers. The Coffeyville City Commission approves some fee increases. City Clerk Cindy Price says cart rentals will increase a bit and seniors will no longer receive a discount.

In other business, Commissioners also approved a formal mutual aid agreement between the Coffeyville Fire Department and Montgomery County Rural Fire District.

Kansas lawmakers continue to work on projects ahead of the 2019 Legislative Session. Representative Jim Kelly says he will be attending a joint committee meeting on KPERs later this month.

The Independence Republican says they will also hear a report about cancer and Hepatitis C rates among emergency responders.

Good job Coffeyville. The city reports success from the city-wide clean up. Over 383 loads of trash were brought in over seven days, filling up 10 40-yard and four 30-yard dumpsters. That total does not include tree debris. The Tree Dump resumes normal hours this week.

Those are  3-6 p.m. Thursday and Friday,  8am - 4 pm, on Saturdays, and Sundays from noon to 4.

The old Amazon building remains on the auction block for another month as they were unable to hit their reserve from the initial bidding. M.C.A.C’s Trisha Purdon says the bid is only at 7 million as someone may be getting a good deal on a huge building. She urges investors to get involved as the size of the facility allows for rental space as well. A smart investor could get a low priced building with huge potential of space to rent to other businesses. Purdon again mentioned where the bid stands, which is at 7 million dollars. Purdon mentioned the owners would like to hit their reserve but are willing to take a loss on the bidding which ends on the 17th of November, that falling on Saturday makes Purdon believe we will have our answer that following Monday.

Schools.com, an online higher education resource, ranked I C C first in its 2018 report, “Best Community Colleges in Kansas.” The company ranked 21 community colleges in Kansas based on multiple factors, including percentage of students enrolled in distance education; cost of attendance; student-to-faculty ratio; graduation rate; transfer-out rate; and flexibility. In recent weeks, ICC also was ranked in the Top 25 “Best Community Colleges in America” by the web-based financial advisory company SmartAsset.

The rankings come at the same time the Chronicle of Higher Education published an article looking at some of the down-sides of ICC's time in the Last Chance U Lens and some of the community's disenchantment with Football Coach Jason Brown.

An Independence man receives a year-long sentence for killing his neighbor's dog. Montgomery County Attorney Larry Markle tells KGGF News that Wade Jones will serve a minimum of 30 days in the Montgomery County Jail before serving 12-months of probation for the malicious killing of Zoey, a boxer. Jones was convicted by a jury on one count of felony Cruelty to Animals and one misdemeanor count of Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm in City Limits.

Jones was also fined $500.00 and assessed other court costs and fees.

Freeman Health System and Labette Health announce a formal collaboration to offer more services to patients in southeast Kansas. Labette Health CEO Brian Williams says the two medical providers have been working together informally.

Williams said Labette employees won't lose jobs and a local board will still be in charge. Freeman has a similar agreement in place with the hospital in Girard.

A pedestrian is struck by a City of Dewey Public Works vehicle around 9:05 on Thursday night. The pedestrian was taken to a hospital in Tulsa in critical condition. 

More details are expected today.

Nowata County Sheriff Kenny Freeman defends himself on a single charge of embezzlement. He was arrested yesterday following a donation of school supplies made by Walmart . Freeman says he tried to follow protocol.

A complaint was brought up at the October 1 meeting of the Nowata County Commissioners regarding the donation. County Clerk Chris Freeman, the sheriff's wife, addressed it. Freeman was appointed as sheriff in February to serve the rest of Sandy Hadley’s term after she retired. He plans to continue his bid for election. Freeman is due back in court on November 19^th.

The work continues at Caney Valley High School. Voters approved a 12-year, $4-million bond for electrical and HVAC upgrades at all school buildings last November. Teacher and Coach Emily Washburn says work is underway on a secured entrance at the high school.

The entryway should be completed by the first of the year. Washburn says the HVAC improvements have made conditions much more comfortable for students.

Nowata County Sheriff Kenny Freeman was arrested Wednesday morning on a single charge of embezzlement according to district attorney Kevin Buchanan. The charge is a felony.  The arrest stems from a donation of school supplies made by Walmart to two separate Nowata County schools. The donation had been held up by the Nowata County commissioners for the last four weeks. Freeman is being held in the Washington County jail because Buchanan says it would be inappropriate to hold him in his own jail. Freeman will be arraigned in Nowata County.

Freeman was nearly removed from office by the district attorney in August but a petition for removal was voted down by the county commissioners.

A slow period for the AG’s office as we wait on our new governor to be voted in, though Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt did note on an area him and his office are working very hard to control. Eliminating the multiple calls a day you receive that lead to scammers. Schmidt says it has to start with the phone companies as these crimes and calls are very difficult to enforce. Schmidt says that this issue needs to be dealt with the phone companies as well, as for his office they are very difficult to handle. If we eliminate those calls from ever coming in, it takes away the potential of getting scammed. Schmidt ask everyone to pay extra attention to those calls, even if it comes from a local number. He says if they ask for your name or any personal information its most likely a scam. Some scammers will pose as government officials, business owners and even family members.

A wanted subject in Nowata is believed to be dangerous. The subject is Eric Anthony Whitney and after attempting to run over a South Coffeyville Police Officer this morning the police are looking for him.  Whitney has warrants out of Oklahoma for numerous drug offenses and when South Coffeyville made contact with him, an arrest was attempted and a struggle ensued. Whitney got back in to his vehicle and attempted to flee. The South Coffeyville Officer who was attempting to arrest him still had ahold of him as he fled. The Officers arm was caught, however he is okay. A pursuit then ensued. Whitney fled from the scene driving through yards and on sidewalks at a high rate of speed. His vehicle became inoperable, which required him to flee on foot. Whitney was last seen in Coffeyville, KS. However, he does live in Delaware, OK.

Whitney is facing additional Felony charges out of South Coffeyville. If spotted, please contact 911 immediately. Do not approach or make contact with him yourself.

We sat down with C.C.C’s Yvonne Hull on notable dates upcoming for the community college. With now Homecoming behind us, and mid-way through October it’s time to start looking into Spring Courses. November the 5th is when Spring Enrollment will open up for the college. U.S.D 445 is always doing there best to keep up with the times and make sure our students have the equipment they need. Asst. Superintendent of Technology with the district James Elliot says this last year they added a handful of computers. Elliot says the district within the last year has added 300 laptops to the grade school, as he says the students have reacted well the the upgrade. Not only are they teaching them use of the device but also safe streaming while online as they block certain cities with the district buildings. Elliot discussed on how the district continues to grow with the times and invest into current technology. Elliot says whether you like it or not that's the way the times are going and we need to teach our children about it. Elliot notes their goal is to make sure each student that comes through their doors does not step back in time, but is supported with the technological tools that are available now.

A Dennis man suffers multiple injuries in a fall off a cliff.  Montgomery County Sheriff Bobby Dierks says 49-year-old Howard Walker, Junior, was out along River Road when he lost his footing, and fell 300 feet.  Walker was transported to Coffeyville Regional Medical Center for treatment.  

Sheriff Dierks says Walker sustained broken ribs and other injuries in the fall. 

A five-vehicle crash near Caney leaves one dead and sends three others to the hospital. The Kansas Highway Patrol says the wreck occurred in the east bound lanes of U-S 166 when 17-year-old Jalen Kristopher Bush went left of center and struck the second vehicle head-on. A third vehicle struck Bush's vehicle. The forth vehicle then tried to avoid striking that car, but struck Bush's vehicle and then the fifth vehicle that was stopped on the westbound shoulder.

Bush, 76-year-old Linda Coots, and 81-year-old Geraldine Wilson Jay were transported for medical treatment. 79-year-old Edgar Coots died from injuries sustained in the crash.

ABB Inc. plans to hire approximately 90 people at the Bartlesville.  The company says as part of its continuing review of the business,  its intent to consolidate analytic manufacturing at our Lewisburg, WV location into factories in Bartlesville, OK and Quebec, Canada.  A final decision is contingent on negotiations with our employee union.  Those talks are currently under way. 

The factory closing will impact approximately 130 workers at the Lewisburg location.

Independence Police Officers dispatched to a crash make a surprise discovery while looking for the owner of a car. It happened in the 600 block of Washington. A parked car was hit. Officers were knocking on doors looking for the owner when they observed drug paraphernalia in plain view. A search warrant was obtained and officers seized alcohol, marijuana, suspected psychedelic mushrooms, and firearms.

Tanner Strange, Clayton Williams, and Michael Cavallaro all from Independence were arrested on complaints of cultivating a controlled substance, distribution of hallucinogenics, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of alcohol by a minor for all three men.

The November General Election approaches. Montgomery County Clerk Charlotte Scott Schmidt says residents really need to make an effort to cast their ballots.

Schmidt says for those who may be unable to make it to the polls on election day, advance balloting begins on October 17^th. It is already possible for you to request your ballot.  October 16th is the deadline to register to vote.

A multile vehicle crash on US 166 by Kopco. Possibly as many as five vehicles involved. A number of injuries have been reported and possibly a fatality.  The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has now been joined by the Kansas Highway Patrol.  

Life-Flight has landed near Caney Valley High School to transport some of the injured.  

The victim has been identified in an early morning homicide that is under investigation in Independence. Police Chief Jerry Harrison tells KGGF News that the victim is 38 year old Ricky Martin. Officers were called out just after 2 a.m. for a report of shots fired. When officers arrived at the location in southeast Independence, they found the victim who had been killed by a single gun-shot wound.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Indy PD at 332-1700.

The City of Coffeyville is accepting applications for the Average Monthly Payment Plan. Finance Director Stephanie Richardson says its an option to make it easier for customers to budget utility expenses.

Sign up for the program is only available during the month of October. You must be an account holder with 12-months historyto qualify. Complete details are online at the city's website.

A Coffeyville woman receives 60 days in federal prison for stealing $150,000 from a customer at a bank where she worked, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said. In addition, she was ordered to pay full restitution.  61-year-old Phyllis Lanning pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud. She admitted that while she worked for Condon National Bank she created and mailed falsified documents in order to conceal the fact she stole $150,000 from a customer’s account. She diverted legitimate monthly statements to a postal address in Bartlesville, Okla., that she controlled. She prepared counterfeit statements and mailed them to the owner of the account.

The theft was discovered after the owner of the account died and family members took control of the account.

The former Caney City Clerk faces an indictment for an embezzlement scheme. 69-year-old Carole Sue Coker of Missouri is charged with mail fraud and bank fraud. She is charged with stealing more than 36-thousand-dollars and covering up the crime with check for cash scheme. Coker was the city clerk for 40-years before her retirement.

U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister says she embezzled a portion of cash payment by recording only a portion of checks made out to the city to make the city's books appear to balance.

Talking with K-State extension offices Jacob Weber as he just returned from the 4 H national convention in St. Louis with good news!. The team representing the state of Kansas combined their individuals finishes and places 3rd nationally. Weber was very proud of the team and coach Beason. The 4 individuals on that 3rd place team were Ashley Chandler, Chloe Jones, Teya Maxon and Kelsi Shepalski. Both Weber and K State extensions Keith Martin say this is nothing new for the state of Kansas as our 4 H ers are versed on a national level. All 4 finished within the top 15 as they powered they way to a ribbon. Weber congratulates coach Kristina Beason on a great finish and thanks the parents for getting the kids to the event safely.

The investigation continues into a Nowata County shooting.   Sheriff Kenny Freeman says the shooting that took place over the weekend. and involved a juvenile.“This is a horrible tragedy and my heart goes out to the family. As a father, I cannot imagine a deeper hurt, as of now this is still an open investigation and I cannot comment further," said Freeman.

Sheriff Freeman says no charges have been filed at this time. 

The Coffeyville City Commission votes to hire a a new city manager.  Members voted unanimously to extend the position to Mark Hall. He will begin his new duties on October 15th. 

Hall formerly served as the city manager in Liberal.  His employment contract there was terminated in January.  

Coffeyville may take another step tonight toward naming a permanent city manager.  The city commission will meet in executive session at 6:00 to discuss non-elected personnel.  Michael Shook has been serving as the city’s interim city manager since Kendal Francis resigned that post in March.

Tornado sirens sounded across Coffeyville over the lunch hour today as the National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for the area.  The weather agency reported a possible tornado on radar east of Liberty.  The system quickly moved off to the east prompting a severe thunderstorm warning for Labette County.  The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department says there were no reports of damage around the Liberty area.

The preliminary numbers are in. It looks like enrollment has grown for the second year in a row at Coffeyville Public Schools. Assistant Superintendent Michael Speer says they pay close attention to the youngest students.

The USD 445 Board of Education also approved the hiring of several new staff members and received updates on the school redesign efforts at Field Kindley High and Roosevelt Middle Schools.

We sat down Superintendent of USD 447 schools Shelly Kiblinger as well as a member of the revamping committee Sarah Jones on how they all put the bond together. Jones mentions they aimed to keep it good for the taxpayer and especially good for the student. The bond asks for just over 12 million dollars for improvements district wide, which depending on your property rounds out to be about 80 dollars per month increase. Most of the money will be headed towards lincoln Central Elementary School but you are urged to see the issues first hand before voting which you can tonight with a district wide open house with tours at 5 and a panel discussion available at 630 PM at Lincoln Central.

A possible tornado causes damage last night in Fairfax, Oklahoma. That's in Osage County. There have been reports of some minor injuries, but no deaths from the storm. Clean-up continues for the town. The American Red Cross is meeting with those impacted.

A survey team from the National Weather Service will also be on-site today.

Small towns across Kansas struggle to remain relevant. In Caney, some residents are getting involved with a program developed by a Kansas State University professor to build up the town.

Trina Reed says the Caney Community Betterment Group is made up of volunteers with the goal of supporting local businesses and community events-- like the Celebration Caney event over the weekend.

After a fun weekend, the 2018 Dalton Defenders Days is now behind us. Though more exciting news does come from the museum.  Kris Crane with the Dalton museum says by this time next year most of the contents of the Dalton museum will be elsewhere.  Community State Bank, owners of the Condon Bank building in downtown Coffeyville donated the building to the Dalton Museum. Crane says they need to do some demolition and remodeling to the newly acquired bank which they will need volunteer help if you are interested. Crane says they hope to have all the artifacts moved over by winter so they can have a grand opening and celebration by next year's Defenders Days. She stressed the old building will be kept, just the majority of the artifacts will be moved into the old Condon bank as Crane also previewed a special plan they have with the vault inside the bank as they look to showcase the guns used inside the safe.

They have called Coffeyville home since 1948. Thompson Brothers Welding and Industrial Supply celebrates 70-years of business with an open house today. As the 3^rd generation involved in the business, Ryan Thompson says there is a secret to their success.

A lot of vendors and demonstrations on site today for the celebration, which continues until 2 p.m.  KGGF's Sam Speck hosts Openline live on location from their store on 8^th Street.

The Historical Cherryvale Museum looks for an increase in funding from the Montgomery County Commission. Board Secretary Mike Wood says their annual budget now is $3,800 with just over $2,600 allocated by the county.

The museum hosts 350 visitors each year. They have exhibits on actress Vivian Vance, silent film actress Louise Brooks, the Bender Family and others.  The Cherryvale request comes shortly after a similar request from Caney's Historical Society.

A Columbus area man goes to jail after the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office searches his home. Sheriff David Groves says 43-year-old Glenn Jones, II, faces complaints of aggravated intimidation of a witness, possession of methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia, criminal possession of a firearm and criminal stalking.

Jones bond was set at $21,000.

Serving a tainted drink to an Allen County Deputy leaves a McDonald's employee in hot water. The Allen County Attorney files a charge of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer against 22-year-old Trevor Hockaday. He was working at the McDonald's in Iola last month when he is accused of spiking the deputy's drink with a peroxide-based cleaner.

The owner of the restaurant says they are working closely with the authorities.

For 70-years, those needing welding and industrial supplies have turned to Thompson Brothers of Coffeyville. Ryan Thompson is a third generation member of the business and says while they have seen growth, it is also important for them to give back to students.  Thompson says they are also committed to supporting economic development efforts through their involvement with the Montgomery County Action Council and the City of Coffeyville.

Thompson Brothers will have an open-house for students on Thursday and the public on Friday.

More constriction in the health care industry in southeast Kansas. Mercy Health System announces it will close the hospital in Fort Scott by the end of the year. Mercy has served Fort Scott since 1886. The hospital is reportedly working with Community Health Centers of Southeast Kansas to continue physician service for the Fort Scott area. The health system cites declining patient numbers and shrinking re-reimbursements as reasons for the closure.

Mercy closed its Independence hospital in 2015.

Despite a downward trend among enrollment numbers across the state's community colleges, Coffeyville's sees growth. The Kansas Board of Regents released the numbers for fall semester enrollment at all public technical schools, community colleges and four-year institutions. Those numbers show CCC posting the largest enrollment increase of any of the Regents' institutions at 10.41 percent, with 1,451 students.

The report also shows that Independence Community College posted an enrollment decrease of 3.63 percent, down to 633 students.

An employee of the Linn County Jail has been booked into the jail. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation reports 48-year-old John O. Carr was arrested following an investigation into an alleged July incident. He was arrested on a complaint of sexual battery, a class A misdemeanor.

Carr was arrested at the Linn County Sheriff's Office in Mound City.

There's a new doctor in town. Dr. Arron Russell joins the staff at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. He completed medical school at the University of Texas in Houston in 2013. Dr. Russell will be performing general surgery procedures such as gallbladder removals, appendectomies, hernia repairs, and upper/lower endoscopy procedures.

Dr. Russell has three children ages 12, 9 and 5.

An early morning crash takes the life of a man from the Columbus area. Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves says emergency crews responded yesterday to a single vehicle crash. It happened east of Baxter Springs, off of Highway 166. Groves says 42-year-old Gabriel Gaither Gillmore was westbound when he crossed the centerline, went into a ditch, struck a culvert and rolled his pick-up.

He died from injuries sustained in the wreck.

The track at Veterans Memorial Stadium needs to be replaced. The track was built in 2001 and had a lifespan of 10-years. Coffeyville's Deputy Director of Public Works, Jim Bradshaw, says they did a surface seal in 2012 which extended the life of the track. It's estimated the cost of replacement will be nearly $300,000.

The Coffeyville City Commission has agreed to award the contract for the work to Hellas Construction from Texas. The bid process was handled by Greenbush, which will also audit the contract.

A Bond question comes forth for the residence of USD 447 in Cherryvale and Thayer. Superintendent Shelly Kiblinger says they seek just over 12 million dollars. Kiblinger says most of that 12 million will be heading towards rebuilding the elementary school, as well as enhancing the technical shops within the high school, and complying with ADA regulations all through out the district. Depending on the value of your home Kiblinger stressed the yearly tax increased would only be around 60 to 80 dollars. If you'd like to see these issues around the district yourself, Kiblinger mentioned a district wide open house, where every district building will be open for tours on October 9^th from 5 to 8 PM.
