10 People Homeless After Overnight Fire

A structure fire in a two-story, multi-family dwelling at 405 S. Elm has left ten people homeless. The Coffeyville Fire Department responded just after midnight to the four-apartment structure, and upon arrival, heavy flames were visible. Fire crews began extinguishing the fire while a search was conducted upstairs for possible victims. All four apartments were occupied, and all occupants had escaped. Off duty fire personnel, and the South Coffeyville Fire Department were called to assist. The fire took 45 minutes to bring under control as cold temperatures hampered firefighting efforts. There were no injuries reported. Damage to the structure, owned by Dan Leoffler, is estimated to be $85,000. No cause of the fire has been determined at this time, and the fire is under investigation by the Coffeyville Police and Fire Departments.

Improved Sound For ICC'S Inge Theater

The sound inside the William Inge Theater at Independence Community College should be improving soon. A grant from the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission (KCAIC) and funds donated by the ICC Foundation  will go toward the purchase of professional-level acoustic shells.  The grant was for $5,000.  The foundation supplied matching funds to cover the $10,600 cost of the six shells.  The shells create a portable wall structure specially designed to direct sound from the stage toward the audience.  The shells are expected to be delivered to the college in mid-February.

Foundation Director Mandy Monroy says the gift is an ideal opportunity to support a project that mutually benefits the college and community.

Reminder From KDOT & KHP: Buckle Up

The Kansas Department of Transportation and Kansas Highway Patrol urge drivers and passengers to use seatbelts. Within the past two weeks, over a four day period, six crashes left seven people dead.  None of the people killed were wearing seatbelts.  KHP and K-DOT remind drivers that it takes seconds to buckle up. They say that time can make a difference in surviving a wreck or not.

The Kansas Department of Transportation offers statistics that indicate in 2017 seatbelt compliance was at the highest rate over a several year span.  The public information office says as safety constraint usage increases, the number of deaths decreases.

Capitol Hill Questioning Changes To Liver Transplant Policy

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas joins with other senators seeking answers about recent changes to the national liver distribution policy implemented by the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network.  The Manhattan Republican joins with a bipartisan group of 21 Senators over concerns that areas in rural and low-income areas may have reduced access to locally donated livers which could lengthen wait times for those whose lives depend on receiving a transplant. The senators note that, by failing to account for regional variations in liver donation rates and disparities in the performance of organ procurement organizations, the OPTN’s policy change appears to reward locations that underutilize existing organ resources and have historically had troubled OPOs.

Moran is especially concerned about the impact the changes could have on Kansas City-area hospitals that offer liver transplants.  Senator Pat Roberts was also among those signing the letter.

The full text of the letter can be found here.

Potential for Winter Weather in Afternoon and Evening

The National Weather Service has updated the forecast from last night as the system has slowed down and will now be producing some winter weather across Central Kansas. The front should push through Southeastern Kansas this afternoon with rain and drizzle along with strong north winds at 25 to 40 mph. Late afternoon wind chills will be in the 20's. The NWS is having a hard time determining how far the freezing drizzle and snow will make it and will be expanding the advisories this afternoon as the storm slowly moves through Kansas. They believe much of the precipitation will fall as rain through the early evening but there is a chance for it to switch to freezing drizzle and it won't take much to make our roads slippery and dangerous this evening. The time frame for our area will be after 1 p.m. probably in the 2-3 p.m. time frame through early evening.

Temperatures for tomorrow will stay cool with another front on Thursday and Saturday keeping us in the cold.

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt explains this program is one he especially likes. Schmidt explains one of the best parts, is no tax dollars go into compensating these victims. The program is funded by a portion of the court costs and fines, inmate wages, parole fees and restitution paid by convicted offenders. Schmidt says unfortunately they see about 2 to 300 cases for this program per month though is glad something like this is in place.

Red Ravens Win; Head Coach Jay Herkelman Wins 622

In part 2 of the double header against Allen County Community College, it wasn’t just any game the Red Ravens men’s basketball team. This was a potential record-breaking win for their great head coach Jay Herkelman to pass Francis Flax from Brown Mackie, to be the winningest head coach in Region 6 history. Herkelman is already the holder of the most wins in school history at Coffeyville, the top win holder in the Jayhawk Conference, and looked to get to 622 wins to pass Flax last night.

In what was an explosive display of offense, the Red Ravens did not disappoint in this battle. Hosting an Allen County team who is right in the middle of the Eastern standings at 4-4 and 12 and 5 on the year overall. The Red Devils are known to score with their ability to drive the basketball, but Coffeyville’s offense was just too much. Shooting 66% from the floor, 64% from behind the arc and got 16 points off the bench in the first half. The first half was led the way by Marvin Johnson with 18 points, Tevin Brewer with 15 points, and Keon Queen with 10 who also had 9 rebounds in the first half flirting with a double-double. At the half C.C.C had a very comfortable lead 63 to 34, but still had work to do to get their coach this win. The second half started rather slow paced, both teams struggling to score though Coffeyville’s lead made it easy for them to get back into a grove again. An exciting 2nd half was another offensive display with Alley Oops, Big Dunks and getting players off the bench involved, this became a very easy win in the end for Coffeyville as they beat Allen County 105 to 71. Johnson finished with 28 points, 7 assists and 3 rebounds, while Keon Queen finished with his double-double at 13 points and 11 rebounds. Coffeyville finishes at 58% from the floor and 55% from three as they notch the big number 622 for head coach Jay Herkelman.

After the victory, the school had a ceremony gifting Jay Herkelamn with a plaque, that signifies him as the NJCAA Region 6 winningest head coach off all time. In an emotional speech coach Herk says, “This team, this town. It means a lot to me, and there is much more to come, especially with this group of guys.” A 24-year career that started at C.C.C back in 1995 has gotten Jay Herkelman this well-deserved plaque passing Francis Flax with now 622 wins, which took Flax his entire 23-year career to get. Herkelman is well on his way to 694 which would put him in the top 25 winningest head coaches in the entire NJCAA, though with his speech last night. Coach is more focused on bringing a national championship to Coffeyville.

C.C.C. travels to Independence on Wednesday for a Montgomery County Showdown with a tough Pirates team with a later tip off around 8 PM. We will cover this game on your home the Red Ravens FM 98.1 KUSN, pre-game starting after the ladies’ game. You can find their full re-cap VS. Allen County under the sports tab here on KGGFradio.com

Chiefs Fans Ready For Big Game

Sunday’s forecast for Arrowhead looks like another frigid day for football fans. Temperatures will stay below freezing as the Kansas City Chiefs host the New England Patriots in the NFL’s AFC Championship.  Kick-off is set for 5:40 Sunday evening and the Chiefs Kingdom will be out in full-force. Parking passes can be purchased in advance from the Chiefs for $50. Gameday passes at the toll gates will cost $60. AAA-Kansas advises for fans staying overnight, accommodations could be difficult to get. Many hotels are booked and others have limited availability. With the threat of winter weather affecting roads, AAA-Kansas also recommends that drivers pack a winter emergency kit to keep in their vehicles. The kit should include items such as a fully charged cell phone, cell phone charger, snow brush, de-icer, shovel, kitty litter or other material for traction, bright triangle or reflector, first aid kit, flash light, jumper cables, tool kit, blankets and warm clothing, drinking water and snacks.

For those looking to avoid some of those issues, you can listen to the game on The Mighty 690 KGGF. There will be pre-game coverage ahead of the 5:40 pm kick-off.

Winter Blast On Its Way

The temperatures prepare to tumble below freezing tomorrow.  The forecast calls for lows in the 20s through much of next week.  That means some additional precautions will be needed.  While most people have already made the milk, bread, and toilet paper run, don’t forget to check on your neighbors who may need assistance as the bone-chilling temps set in.  Also, if you have pets you should bring them inside if possible.  If not, make sure they have extra food and water and a warmer place to shelter.  AAA-Kansas also reminds residents to make the effort to prevent frozen or burst pipes which can result not only in discomfort, but also in expensive repairs.

The insurance division of AAA offers some tips.

Preventing Frozen Pipes:

  • Make sure everyone in your family knows where the water shut-off valve is and how it works.
  • Insulate pipes in your home's crawl spaces and attic, even if you live in an area where freezing temperatures are unlikely.
  • Seal gaps around pipes that allow cold air inside. You also should look for air leaks around electrical wiring, clothes dryer vents and pipes. Use caulk or insulation to keep the cold out.
  • Disconnect garden hoses. If possible, use an indoor valve to shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets. This reduces the chance that pipes inside the house will freeze.
  • If a freeze is expected, consider allowing warm water to drip slightly overnight, preferably from a faucet on an outside wall. Even a slight trickle may keep your pipes from freezing.
  • When there is the possibility of a freeze, don’t turn down the thermostat at bedtime. Instead, maintain the same setting day and night. Drops in temperature, which are more common overnight, could freeze your pipes.
  • Open cabinet doors. This will allow heat to reach uninsulated pipes located under sinks.
  • AAA Travel agents report that this is a busy time for travelers looking for good deals or trips to warmer places. If you’re going on vacation or leaving your home for an extended period of time, consider maintaining minimal heat to prevent freezing.

Recovering from Frozen Pipes:

  • If you turn on your faucets and nothing comes out, your pipes are likely frozen. Don’t wait for them to burst. Take measures to thaw them immediately, or call a plumber for assistance.
  • You may be able to use a hair dryer to thaw a frozen pipe. Begin by warming the section of pipe closest to the faucet, then work your way out toward the coldest part of the pipe.
  • Never use a hair dryer or any electrical appliances in areas of standing water. You could be electrocuted.
  • Never try to thaw a pipe with a torch or other open flame. It could cause a fire.
  • If your water pipes have already burst, turn off the water at the main shutoff valve in the house, leave the water faucets turned on, and call a plumber.
  • Mop up spills. You do not want the water to do more damage than it already has.
  • Call your insurance company claims department as soon as you can. An insurance adjuster does not need to see the spill before you take action. However, the adjuster will want to inspect any damaged items.
  • Make temporary repairs and take other steps to protect your property from further damage. Remove any carpet or furniture that can be further damaged from seepage.
