Emma Janette Johnston

Emma Janette Johnston age 80 passed away on January 11, 2019 in Wichita, KS.

Emma was born on June 28, 1938 in Britton, OK to Dale and Della (Wardlow) Bryan. She attended the rural Deer Creek School until the she moved to Sedan where she graduated from Sedan High School with the class of 57. Shortly after graduation Emma moved to Coffeyville where she began working as a switchboard operator for Southwestern Bell. She retired from ACC in Independence after several devoted years of service. On a blind date in 1958 Emma accompanied Thomas (Bud) Johnston to an American Legion Dance. On August 7, 1959 the couple was united in marriage, they were blessed with two sons and a daughter.  Emma enjoyed cooking, quilting, sewing, cross-stitching, embroidering, and going to the casinos where she would play the penny slots and the occasional nickel slot on a big night. Bud and Emma were inseparable, where one was the other wasn’t too far away. They enjoyed playing cards with friends, pinochle, canasta, and pitch were some favorites. After the children were out of the house they loved traveling, whether it be bus trips or an Alaskan cruise they were always ready for the next destination. Emma was a member of the First Baptist Church and the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. When Emma started quilting, Bud would make comments about her needing another machine or more material but shortly was hooked on helping make the quilts for all their children and grandchildren.

Emma’s memories will live on with her children, Dale Johnston his wife Jenni, Tom Johnston, and Barbara Osborn her husband Tim, sister, Vicky Stapp, grandchildren, Paige White, Kimberlin Johnston, Zackary Osborn, and Brett Johnston, great-grandchildren, Camden White and Caelor White.
