Independence Native Wins Congressional Reelection

Republican Derek Schmidt of Independence wins reelection to Kansas Second Congressional District.

Schmidt defeated Democratic challenger Don Coover, who conceded the race. Coover led the totals in early voting, but Schmidt pulled ahead as the evening progressed. Speaking with KGGF just before midnight, he says Republicans will face some challenges as a result of this election.

Schmidt earned just over 6,000 votes in Montgomery County, compared to Coover's 2,500. He says he's especially thankful for voters in his home county.

Schmidt has served in the role since January of 2025 after spending 12 years as Kansas Attorney General.
