KSHSAA Schools Approve Private School Multiplier

Member schools of the Kansas State High School Activities Assocation voted to approve new rules that add a multiplier to private schools for classification purposes.

Private schools have won a disproportionate amount of state championships in recent years. The multiplier would seek to "even out" the playing field by accounting for geographic population, socio-economic population, and a "championship factor."

Schools from Class 1A (74-43), 2A (43-21), 3A (46-18), and 4A (30-6) voted in favor of the change. Classes 5A (17-19) and 6A (6-30) voted against the new rules, meaning the total vote was 216-139 in favor of the multiplier.

The measure will now be sent to the Kansas State Board of Education. If it is approved there, the state legislature will need to propose, and then enact, a bill making the change.
