The Coffeyville Red Ravens and head coach Nick Dobler fell to Butler 29-28 in a rivalry game on the 25th anniversary of Veterans Memorial Stadium, dropping to 2-5 on the season.
John Nicholas opened the scoring with a 14-yard scramble, diving inside the right pylon for his first rushing touchdown of the year to make it 7-0.
After a field goal by the Grizzlies, Messiah Cage caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Nicholas to make it 14-3 before another three points from Butler cut the lead to eight heading into halftime.
Coffeyville recorded its first defensive touchdown of the year on a blocked punt return, extending its lead to 15 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Butler responded with 17 unanswered points, taking its first lead of the night on a 44-yard field goal. Nicholas then found Cam Hunter for a 37-yard touchdown pass to put Coffeyville back in front 28-23 with a little over five minutes remaining.
The Grizzlies found the end zone again with 1:52 left in the fourth quarter, and Coffeyville stopped the two-point conversion attempt. However, the Red Ravens were unable to put together a game-winning drive, as Malachi Berg was sacked on the final play after coming in for an injured Nicholas.
Coffeyville drops to 1-2 in conference play and will face No. 1 Hutchinson next week in another KJCCC matchup. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 p.m., with kickoff set for 7 on US 98.
