West Elk became the first team to score on Sedan all season, but one score just wasn't enough as the Blue Devils waltzed to a 52-6 victory Saturday.

The Patriots (2-2) would actually get on the board first, as quarterback Rocky Hanks found the endzone from 1-yard out. However, it would be 52 consecutive points for Sedan (4-0), including two rushing touchdowns for quarterback Eli Campbell. Sedan would even pick up a touchdown on the defensive side of the ball, a 16-yard interception return for Kaden Walker that capped off the first quarter.

The lone passing touchdown of the game came early in the second half on a halfback pass, as Sedan's Isaiah Smilko found Dameion Hatten deep down the field for a 37-yard score. The deciding and final score would come just six minutes later, as Fernando Mendoza scampered 16-yards for a touchdown on his first carry of the game. The game was called off in the third quarter, Sedan leading 52-6.

Sedan, now 4-0 on the season, will face its toughest challenge yet with a home contest against fellow unbeaten Oswego. West Elk will hit the road to face off against 1-2 Marmaton Valley. The Game of the Week will take a break from 8-man football as we travel to Neodesha. The Bluestreaks will face off against Fredonia next Friday on 690 AM, KGGF.

The Caney Valley Bullpups dominated in a 40-6 win over the Cherryvale Chargers on Friday night.

The Bullpups ended up with 315 total yards of offense with 311 of those coming on the ground, unofficially. Junior running back Tanner Rose led the way with 182 total rushing yards on 16 carries with 3 touchdowns.

Junior running back, Baylor Thornton, had a couple of touchdowns of his own, and their other junior running back, Trey King, also had a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

As for the defense, they didn't even give up a total of 100 total yards to the Charger offense. Cornerback/quarterback DaRon Davis got the team's lone turnover in the second quarter when he jumped the route and picked off Charger quarterback Jackson Knight.

The Bullpups received all 21 points to start district play as they are tied with Galena and Columbus atop 3A District-1.

After taking care of business Friday, they will take on their toughest challenge yet as they face Galena in Caney next Friday. Kyle Hey will be on the play-by-play on 104.1 KGGF and Jared Sleppy will be doing the color commentary duties. Pregame is at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff is at 7 p.m.

A tough opponent and a short week to prepare was too much for Field Kindley as the fall to Topeka-Hayden in this one 49-0. The Wildcats set the tempo early with a 75 yard touchdown return on the opening kickoff. Coffeyville struggled to find any momentum offensively leaving short fields for Hayden to capitalize on. The Wildcats would lead 34-0 at half. Hayden would sub in the backups early in the 3rd quarter and hold onto the shutout victory. 
 

The Nado welcome Mulvane next week for a homecoming matchup as the look to improve their 1-2 record. 

September is National Suicide Prevention Month.  The Coffeyville Community College baseball team will participate in a 2.3 mile walk to raise awareness of this fact and also honor a former player.

The "2.3 for CT23" walk was set up by CCC baseball alumni and the family of Conner Taylor, a former Red Raven baseball team member.   Those interested in the event should go to Walter Johnson Park at 4 p.m. this Saturday, September 26th. Masks and social distancing will occur while on the walk. A big picture will be taken at the end of the event to post on 2.3 for CT23 Foundation social media pages.

Field Kindley has found an opponent for Friday night as they get set to take on Hayden. Head Coach Deonta Wade says they just got some players back from quarantine which has allowed some of the younger players to get reps during practice.

Coach Wade says they guys coming back from quarantine are ready to compete, and with a short week of prep it'll be tough matchup against Hayden. They Wildcats come into Coffeyville with a 2-1 record.

The Caney Valley Bullpups kick off district play this Friday against the Cherryvale Chargers.

Caney Valley is entering this game coming off a 36-14 win over Erie while rolling up 432 yards of offense with just over 350 on the ground. The running game has been spearheaded by the rushing attack of Baylor Thornton and Tanner Rose who both rushed for over 100 yards on Friday with Rose getting into the end zone twice. Thornton is over 300 yards on the season while Rose at 200 yards despite missing the first game of the season.

Cherryvale is led by quarterback Chet Linn who has thrown for just over 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the season while rushing for over 100 yards.

There will be fall college football in southeast Kansas after all. Pittsburg State football has announced dates for four games this fall, with the expectation of adding a fifth.

The Gorillas plan to play five games this fall with two against MIAA rivals Nebraska-Kearney and Missouri Western. The MIAA suspended the fall season back in August, citing, among other things, COVID-19 testing requirements from the NCAA. As far as fan attendance and procedures for those games, that’s still a work in progress.

The Gorillas will begin their season at home at 1 PM on Halloween day as Nebraska-Kearney will be calling. The next two games will be on the road against Missouri Western and NCAA FCS opponent Stephen F. Austin on November 7^th and 14^th, respectively. The Gorillas will have a home game to be announced at a later date on November 2^nd with the season ending November 28^th on the road against West Texas A&M.

For the second straight week, the Game of the Week featured a shutout as the West Elk Patriots defeated the Flinthills Mustangs 42-0.

West Elk (2-1) opened up the scoring quickly, with sophomore running back Tayden Tindle finding the endzone from 17 yards out to put the Patriots ahead with over 10 minutes left in the first quarter.  West Elk would not give up that lead, with quarterback Rocky Hanks adding three more rushing touchdowns, each from only 1 yard out, to make the score 30-0 at the half.

After the break, the Patriots would take some time to find the endzone, but would eventually do so for the first time through the air, as Hanks found junior receiver Wesley Young for a 7-yard passing TD. Flinthills (0-3) could not get anything to work offensively, and although they managed to venture into Patriots territory a few times, turnovers continued to punish the team. West Elk forced three fumbles and picked off quarterback Hunter Lowmaster three times for a total of six turnovers.

With the time winding down, senior running back Nathan Bahr would find his time to shine as he picked up his lone rushing touchdown from three yards out to secure the final score of 42-0.

The Patriots will once again play during next week's Game of the Week, as they play host to the visiting Sedan Blue Devils. Sedan defeated Central Burden on Friday 50-0, and have not allowed a point all season. The Game of the Week can be heard on 690AM, KGGF.

The Caney Valley Bullpups rolled up 432 yards of offense including 354 on the ground as they ran over the Erie Red Devils by a score of 36-14. 

The Bullpups (3-0) had a pair of 100-yard rushers as Baylor Thornton led the team on the ground rushing for 140 yards on 14 carries while Tanner Rose toted the ball 14 times for 111 yards and punched the ball into the end zone twice. DaRon Davis started the game at quarterback for Caney Valley and went 3-6 through the air for 44 yards including a 21-yard strike to Brec Williams.

On the defensive side of the football, Erie (1-2) was held to 89 yards of total offense. Dawson Lehman was held to just 15 yards on 14 carries and went 5-9 through the air for 24 yards with a touchdown.

After Field Kindley had their game canceled earlier this week, Independence has also had their game canceled due to the entire Fort Scott team going into quarantine.

After discussion with the local health department and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Fort Scott determined that the whole football team needed to go into quarantine because football is considered a high-risk activity. Independence played at Fort Scott last week as a replacement game due to Wichita's district canceling their fall sports season. That decision has since been reversed.

Independence Public Schools announced in a Facebook post Wednesday that the Montgomery County Health Department had notified the school about the player in question. Individuals identified as close contacts will not be allowed to return to school for at least 14 days, but will have access to Remote Learning. All individuals identified as close contacts have already been notified.

Independence was scheduled to play at home against Fort Scott in the regularly scheduled match-up this Friday.

Due to a number of Field Kindley High School students currently under quarantine two football games have been cancelled for the upcoming week. Head Coach Deonta Wade says the junior varsity game against Columbus and the varsity game at Valley Center have both been cancelled. Wade says they will continue to practice with the players not in quarantine. 
 

The Nado who are 1-1 will return to the football field on Friday, August 25th for a Homecoming matchup against rival Independence. 

All Field Kindley soccer games are also cancelled for the week.

Caney Valley's high-powered rushing attack led the Bullpups to a 42-0 shutout win over the Neodesha Bluestreaks.

Sophomore DaRon Davis got the start at quarterback for the Bullpups, and he played well. Caney Valley doesn't really air it out, but when Davis slung it around, he was solid. He ended up going 5-for-10 with 70 yards and a touchdown. 

Junior running back Baylor Thornton found the endzone twice again after a two-touchdown outing last week in Fredonia. He now has 4 touchdowns on the season and 166 rushing yards. Another junior running back, Tanner Rose, also had himself a multi-touchdown game, Friday. He had a 5-yard score in the first quarter, and a 53-yard touchdown after a beautifully timed pitch from Davis.

Junior Brec Williams started at quarterback last week, but this week he lined out at wide receiver and took some carries as well. He scored on an 11-yard reception late in the fourth quarter to seal the Bullpups' victory

Caney Valley moves to 2-0, while Neodesha falls to 0-2. The Bullpups host Erie next Friday, September 18th, on 104.1 KGGF FM.

Field Kindley falls in their second week matchup at home against Columbus 14-7, now 1-1 on the season. The Nado struck first in the first quarter on a 43 yard passing touchdown to Darrell Jones. Columbus would answer with a touchdown of their own in the second quarter on an 8 yard screen to Gabe Martin. After a missed PAT Coffeyville would hold a slim 7-6 lead which they took into halftime. Issues with the snap continued this game with the Nado. A wild snap went over the head of Aaron Rutherford recovered by Columbus at the Nado two lead to the go ahead touchdown and two point conversion.

Coffeyville had opportunities to tie the game but mistakes cost them. A play was called back that had the Nado at first and goal at the 8 and then a bad snap on fourth down with under two minutes to play would be the difference. The run defense of Columbus gave the Coffeyville offense fits as it held them to just 8 yards on 27 attempts. Gabe Martin for the Titans led the way with 131 yards on the ground. Nado head back on the road for a week three matchup against Valley Center.

Sedan pitched its second straight shutout this season, defeating Flinthills 48-0 in our Game of the Week.

The Blue Devils (2-0) scored early and often, picking up two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. Sedan quarterback Eli Campbell picked up one of those scores while running back Isaiah Smilko picked up the other.

Campbell was be the star of the show. The senior added another rushing touchdown in the second quarter and picked up his first through the air when he found Dameion Hatten in the endzone from 11 yards out. More scoring opportunities awaited Campbell, including a 57-yard punt return and a 15-yard fumble scoop and score to put the game out of reach before halftime.

Both teams would head into the locker room for the halftime break, but the second half was cut short after another 11 yard touchdown pass from Campbell to Hatten halfway through the third quarter. The officials would call the game at that moment, giving Sedan its second victory of the season.

Flinthills (0-2) will feature again on next week's Game of the Week, as the Mustangs travel to Howard to face the West Elk Patriots. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and can be heard on 690AM, KGGF.

It's senior night at Veterans Memorial Stadium for Field Kinley High School tonight.

The Golden Tornado are taking on the Columbus Titans at 7 p.m. on the gridiron with senior night festivities happening throughout the evening.

Senior night is occurring this evening as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Many high schools are having their senior nights at their first game of the season in case of any schedule alterations.

The Caney Valley Bullpups will look to improve to 2-0 on the season as they will make a second consecutive trip to Wilson County to take on the winless Neodesha Blue Streaks.

Caney Valley's running game was the story last Friday as the Pups amassed nearly 300 yards of offense on the ground in a 32-14 win over Fredonia. Baylor Thornton carried the load with 122 yards on 22 carries and touching the end zone twice. Brec Williams made his first start at quarterback by going 2-2 for 39 yards and tossing a touchdown while rushing for over 100 yards and picking up another touchdown.

Eureka downed Neodesha last week by a score of 47-18. Running back Phoenix Carpenter led the Neodesha attack by picking up 65 yards while Andrew Harrell ran for a touchdown and picked up a second by returning an interception for 47 yards.

Field Kindley headed on the road for their week one matchup against Augusta. It was a slow start for both teams, but after a scoreless first quarter both teams turned it on for a final of Coffeyville 34 and Augusta 21.

The Nado got on the board early in the second on a 12 yard run by Ethan Camp that was setup by a long run by the Quarterback Aaron Rutherford. FKHS saw some explosive touchdowns from both Tariq Logan, a 67 yard touchdown, and Darrell Jones, a 76 yard touchdown. Coffeyville scored 21 unanswered in the second quarter and would lead at the half 21-0.

Augusta made it a much more competitive second half but the balance of the Nado offense was too much for the Orioles. Ethan Camp was named player of the game with 12 carries for 136 yards and 3 touchdowns. Aaron Rutherford had over 200 yards passing and over 100 yards on the ground. FKHS comes home for their week two matchup against Columbus.

The Caney Valley Bullpups racked up nearly 300 yards of offense on the ground and were able to pull away in the last part of the 4th quarter to down the Fredonia Yellowjackets by a score of 32-14.

Brec Williams started at quarterback for the Bullpups and left his fingerprints on both sides of the football.  On offense, Williams was 2-2 for 39 yards and a touchdown while adding 85 yards on the ground and punching in another score.  On defense, he pulled down an interception that would lead to Caney Valley closing the door on a Fredonia comeback attempt.

Caney Valley would get the lone score in the first half as Baylor Thornton received a pitch from Williams to scamper 15 yards into the end zone to make it 6-0 at the break.

The teams would trade scores before John Dutton would hit Layne Mayeske in stride for 66-yard touchdown to cut the Bullpup lead to four at 18-14.  The Yellowjackets would get no closer than that as Williams and Thornton would tack on two more touchdowns in the final minutes.

The Erie Red Devils got their season started off on the right foot, claiming their first win of the season over the Cherryvale Chargers, 24-16.

Before the game, Cherryvale honored its seniors in football, volleyball, cheerleading and band. Erie quarterback Dawson Lehman was the star of the show, picking up three rushing touchdowns of 3 yards, 7 yards and then 29 yards to cap off the first half. The Cherryvale defense showed signs of promise, forcing Lehman to scramble out of the pocket several times. However, the senior quarterback showed an excellent ability to find room and improvise to get out of those sticky situations. Cherryvale would pick up its lone first half touchdown on a 1-yard touchdown run by Briggs Adkinson, a play that he would set up himself with an interception in Erie territory on defense.

The Red Devils would not pick up a single point in the second half, but they didn't need to. Erie spent much of the second half slowly whittling down the clock, only going to the air a couple of times as they continued to pound the Chargers with the rushing attack of Lehman and running back Caden Eads. Cherryvale would add some excitement to the contest after Adkinson returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown, but a last minute drive by the Chargers would end about 30 yards too short. A turnover on downs allowed the Red Devils to run out the clock for the win.

Erie improves to 1-0 on the season, while Cherryvale falls to 0-1. The Red Devils will host Eureka next week, while Cherryvale will hit the road to take on Leon-Bluestem. Next week's Game of the Week will pit the Sedan Blue Devils against the Flinthills Mustangs. That game will go live on 690AM, KGGF at 7 p.m.

It's high school football season in the state of Kansas as week one is set to begin. The Field Kindley Golden Tornado head on the road to take on the Augusta Oriole. It's a unique situation for the returning Nado players as they will start their season where last season ended. First Year Head Coach Deonta Wade says it starts on the line and if they can dominate there they can get their skill positions going.

Coach Wade says the big motto for this season is everyday go 1-0. You can catch the Nado's matchup on Sonshine 98.9 KQQF as Matt Jordan and Brian Ingalls will be on the call, pregame will start around 6:45pm and kickoff is at 7:00pm.

A decision made by Wichita Public Schools Board of Education voted in favor of 6-1 to overturn their August 20 ruling to cancel fall sports. The original ruling was made due to USD 269 being in the "Orange" category of the chart system that the school district adopted. The chart said that if the district was in the orange, that all fall activities would cease.

The new ruling was assisted in part by the local backlash that the school district got from the original decision. #LetThemPlay was being shared on Twitter the day after the decision was made, urging to let the athletes of Wichita participate in their fall activities.

Programs will be able to resume as early as September 10, and schools will be allowed to participate in playoffs and state championships. The "alternative fall" season would not have allowed these schools to play in the postseason.
