A trio of players from the state of Kansas have been named to the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20.

Kansas State's Keyontae Johnson and Markquis Nowell, as well as Kansas junior Jalen Wilson were among the 20 players selected as contenders for the National Player of the Year award.

Wilson leads the Big 12 conference in scoring, averaging 21.4 points per game along with 8.6 rebounds per game. He is considered one of the top contenders for the prestigous award.

Both Nowell and Johnson have led one of the greatest turnarounds in the sport this season. Originally picked to finish at the bottom of the conference, Kansas State finds themselves 18-3 and currently projected as a 3-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Nowell, an undersized senior who has largely gone unnoticed in his career while at Little Rock, has taken the nation by storm and averaged 17 points and 8 assists per game as the backbone of the KSU offense.

Johnson has battled adversity in his own right, recovering from an on-court collapse two seasons ago while at Florida to return to college basketball and play at an extremely high level with 18 points and 8 rebounds per night, including a double-double in a win against his former school.

The John Wooden Award, also known as the National College Basketball Player of the Year Award, will be announced on April 7 following the conclusion of the NCAA Tournament.

The Kansas City Royals have agreed to a one year contract with one of the premier pitchers in the franchise's history.

Zack Greinke, now 39 years old, will be returning to Kansas City for his 20th big league season, and his 9th season with the Royals. The deal is expected to be between $8-10 million dollars plus incentives, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

Greinke has a strong case for the Hall of Fame following retirement, currently ranking 1st in starts, 1st in innings, 2nd in wins, and 3rd in strikeouts among active pitchers. Greinke is also a six-time All Star, six-time Gold Glove Award winner, and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner. He won the 2009 American League Cy Young Award with the Royals as well.

Pitching for the Royals last season, Greinke posted a 4-9 record with a 3.68 earned run average across 26 starts. The right-hander was praised for his veteran presence in a Royals rotation that had no other pitcher older than 26.

Greinke will be a mainstay in the Royals rotation in 2023 and should help new manager Matt Quatraro by being a consistent arm.

For just the 10th time in the 299 game history of the Sunflower Showdown, both the Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas State Wildcats enter the matchup ranked in the Top 10.

The Kansas State Wildcats enter with an 18-3 record and currently ranked #7 in America, and #2 in the Big 12 conference. The Kansas Jayhawks are 17-4 and ranked #8 in the national poll, and sit 4th in the conference standings. Kansas State won the first matchup in Manhattan 83-82 in overtime.

This matchup could feature three future All-Americans, with the dynamic duo of Keyontae Johnson and Markquis Nowell for the Wildcats, and the Big 12's leading scorer, junior Jalen Wilson for the Jayhawks. A game changer for KSU in the first game was the emergence of Desi Sills, who stepped up with 24 points off the bench to push the Wildcats over the top.

KU shoots slightly less from outside the arc than their in-state counterpart, but the two programs are nearly identical in every major statistic. A key player to watch for the Jayhawks will be Ernest Udeh, who did not play in the first matchup, but will be the first forward off the bench tonight, according to Coach Bill Self. Udeh played 12 minutes against Kentucky on Saturday and is a massive body in the paint, standing 6'11 and 250 pounds.

Field Kindley pulls off the doubleheader sweep against Caney with the Lady Nado winning 56-30 and the Nado boys winning 59-32.

Caney would keep things close in the first half keeping the game within four to seven points and trailing 26-19 at halftime. The Lady Nado would open things up in the second half thanks to a combination of good defense and good shooting from beyond the arc. Coffeyville would hit 7 second-half threes. Rya Hightower, who finished with 9 points, had two in the third and Taiylor Caron hit three in the fourth, which was 9 of her 11 points. Savannah Viets led Coffeyville with 13 points.

The Nado boys would find themselves in a closely played first half as well tied at 13 after the first. JoJo Hernandez would come in the second quarter hitting three threes and helping Coffeyville push their lead to seven, 28-21 to end the first half. A big third quarter would see the Nado push the lead to over 20 and it was in large part to the play off the bench for Coffeyville. The FKHS bench had 34 points in the game 14 of which came in the third. The Nado had two players in double digits, Hernandez with 12 and Griffin Adamson with 10. Coffeyville is back in action on Friday at home against Pittsburg.

It appears that Jay Herkelman's Red Ravens are playing their best basketball of the season as we inch closer to the championship chase.

Coffeyville Community College cruised to a 91-68 win over the Colby Trojans on Saturday. The Ravens did just about everything needed to win the game: winning the rebound battle, finishing with more assists, commiting fewer turnovers, and shooting at a higer percentage from the floor.

Hayden Brittingham finished the game with 19 points and 8 rebounds to lead CCC, and Landon Glasper contributed 15 points as well.

The Ravens improve to 18-4 with the victory, and stay atop the KJCCC standings. Assistant Coach Abdul Olusesi says that with big time matchups against tough conference contenders coming up, it's important for the team to stay locked in.

The Red Ravens take the court again on Wednesday night when they battle the Butler Grizzlies in El Dorado. Coverage will begin immediately following the girls game (around 7:30 p.m. CT) on KUSN 98.1 FM.

Following a narrow defeat to 1st place Dodge City, the Coffeyville Community College Lady Ravens were looking to bounce back in a big way as the Colby Trojans came to town.

Tony Turner's squad was knocking down shots, and forcing turnovers in what ended up a convincing 81-50 victory on Saturday afternoon at Nellis Hall. The Lady Ravens pick up their 15th win of the season, and converted on 16 three pointers, as well as forced 28 turnovers against the Trojans.

Bailey Layman was the only Raven in double figures, as she posted a game high 22 points. Oliwia Dyja had nine points off the bench, and Tetona-Woods Blackowl added six points and six assists in the win.

All fifteen players on the Lady Raven roster saw playing time in the game, which Tony Turner says is important as we head down the home stretch of the season, as you can never predict when somebody may be needed.

The Lady Ravens head back on the road to take on the Butler Grizzlies on Wednesday night in El Dorado. Coverage will begin at 5:15 p.m. CT on KUSN 98.1 FM.

In a battle of college basketball's most elite and well-known programs, the Kansas Jayhawks were able to defeat the Kentucky Wildcats 77-68 at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

The Jayhawks improve to 17-4 on the season, and will take some positive momentum back to Lawrence in time for a massive showdown with the Kansas State Wildcats.

In a matchup of two of the best forwards in Divison 1, Jalen Wilson was able to outplay reigning National Player of the Year Oscar Tshiebwe and give his Jayhawks the edge in the paint.

Wilson finished with 22 points and 9 rebounds, while limiting Tshiebwe to 18 points and 8 rebounds. KJ Adams had 17 points for Kansas, while Gradey Dick contributed 13.

The Jayhawks return back to Allen Fieldhouse for a Sunflower Showdown matchup with Kansas State. This game becomes increasingly important for KU, who look to keep pace with the top teams in the Big 12, and avoid a season sweep at the hands of their rival. The Kansas State Wildcats moved on from their loss to Iowa State rather quickly, as they convincingly beat the Florida Gators at Bramlage Coliseum.

The Wildcats improve to 18-3 with the win, and will most likely keep their status as a top-10 ranked team. It is also the first win for Kansas State in the Big 12/SEC challenge series since 2018 against Georgia.

The Kansas State defense was sensational all evening, limiting the Gators to just 31% shooting, and allowing a dominant first half with a 21 point halftime lead. The Wildcats were also able to win the physical battle inside, outrebounding a strong Florida interior 49-36.

Markquis Nowell continued his stellar play, posting 13 points with nine rebounds and eight assists. Keyontae Johnson also had a successful game against his former school, posting a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Moving foward, Kansas State will look to sweep the season series with in-state rival Kansas on Tuesday night. Coverage will start at 6 p.m. CT on the Mighty 690, KGGF.

The Kansas City Chiefs are heading to their third Super Bowl in the Patrick Mahomes era, after defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in the AFC Championship game.

The defense for Kansas City was the talking point in this way, sacking Joe Burrow five times, as well as having a pair of interceptions. Chris Jones ended with a pair of sacks as the Chiefs defensive line was dominant all night long.

Travis Kelce had seven catches and a touchdown, and Marques Valdez-Scantling was huge for the Chiefs, stepping up in the absence of Kadarius Toney, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Mecole Hardman to collect six catches for 116 yards and a touchdown.

Mahomes was efficient despite playing on a serious ankle injury, completing 29 passes for 326 yards. Mahomes also was able to scramble for a first down on the last play of regulation, and set up the game winning 45 yard field goal from Harrison Butker.

The Chiefs will face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII in two weeks, and will look to bring the third Super Bowl championship back to Chiefs Kingdom. The Eagles open the game as two point favorites.

It will be an afternoon full of emotion for Kansas State star forward Keyontae Johnson, as the Wildcats welcome the Florida Gators to the Little Apple.

Johnson spent three seasons with the Gators, before a scary collapse left him hospitalized during the 2020-2021 season. At the time, Johnson was viewed as a top NBA prospect, and has battled back from adversity to become a vital piece for Kansas State, as well as have the opportunity at an NBA future once again.

The Wildcats have a tough schedule ahead this week, with Florida today before a trip to Lawrence on Tuesday.

The Gators play excellent defense and are more than capable of beating any opponent on any given night. The Wildcats will look to get back on track after losing a tough game on the road against a talented Iowa State team.

The Jayhawks are in the midst of a three game losing skid, and will have a difficult task to pick up a road win in hostile Rupp Arena.

The Wildcats started the season very slowly, and even fell out of the NCAA tournament picture. However, they've won four consecutive games and feature reigning national player of the year, Oscar Tshiebwe, who averages 17 points and 14 rebounds per game.

Kansas has thrived in close games under Bill Self, with a 10-3 combined record in the last two seasons in games decided by three points or less, including last year's national championship game.

 It was homecoming in Neodesha as the Bullpups came to town for basketball action; the Blue Streak ladies won 64-35, while the boys of Caney won 53-36.

 Colt Hightower led all scorers with 25, including eight of ten from the free throw line. Nathan Kaminska added ten points, including three 3-pointers. 

 Mason Springer led the Blue Streaks with eight points in the loss. 

 There's not much time for Caney to get ready for their next matchup; they'll take on the Nado of Field Kindley Monday night. Matt Jordan will have the call for both the women's and men's matchup on Sonshine 98.9, KQQF. 

Coffeyville Head Coach Jay Herkelman mentioned that the Red Ravens were searching for a redemption performance, after feeling the first matchup with Dodge City slipped away. The Red Ravens put the conference on notice, and cruised to victory to reclaim the top spot in the KJCCC with a 94-78 win.

The Red Ravens were unable to win against Dodge City in the prior meeting due to missed free throws late in regulation and overtime. Coffeyville corrected that mistake, and shot a very efficient 79% from the line as a team tonight.

Coffeyville was performing at a high level all night long, limiting star guard Jason Edwards to just 12 points, dishing out 13 assists as a team, and knocking down 12 3-pointers.

Landon Glasper led the Ravens with 26 points on 8-14 shooting, and Jordan Wildy had 16 points as well. Camian Shell had 18 points and 4 assists, without missing a shot all night.

The Ravens move back into 1st place in the KJCCC with a win, a position they lost to Dodge City back in early December. The Coffeyville Community College Lady Ravens were unable to dethrone the top team in the conference, falling to Dodge City 73-66 at home tonight.

The Ravens began the game down 6-0 early, leading to an early timeout from Tony Turner. However, Coffeyville would find their stride and tie the game by the end of the first quarter, and take a nine point lead to the half as well.

The lead wouldn't last however, as Dodge would outscore the Red Ravens 20-10 in the 3rd quarter, and 22-16 in the 4th quarter to secure the seven point victory in Nellis Hall.

Jenna Rose Mafua led the Conquistadors with 18 points, while Bree Stephens had 16, and Leah Mafua added 14 points as well. Bailey Layman led the Red Ravens with 20 points, and Jordynn Conner had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

In what may end up being the biggest home game at Nellis Hall this season, the first place Dodge City Conquistadors come to Coffeyville to battle the Red Ravens with the conference title up for grabs.

The Lady Ravens get it started at 5:30, where they can move into 2nd place in the KJCCC with a win over Dodge. Head Coach Tony Turner feels his team needs to win to keep their conference championship hopes alive, and is excited for the atmosphere and energy this matchup will bring, knowing it will fire his players up.

Kennady Roach is coming off of a 31 point performance against Garden City, and Cheyenne Banks has impressed over the past month, posting a double-double multiple times.

The men's game immediately following features a true battle for 1st place. Dodge City leads Coffeyville by a half game in the conference standings, meaning the winner of tonight's game will exit Nellis Hall at the top of the conference.

Dodge was able to win a thriller in overtime in their previous matchup, as the Red Ravens failed to capitalize on opportunities at the free throw line to put the game away in regulation.

The Conquistadors feature a top tier backcourt, featuring talents such as Jason Edwards, DaJion Humphrey, and Jacobi Sebock. The Ravens bring much improved outside shooting to this second matchup, with Soti Nafpliotis among others heating up from the 3-point line.

Head Coach Jay Herkelman says that sophomore guard Nathan Johnson has also stepped up in recent games, and will be a huge x-factor in the game tonight.

For the first time in their 247 game meeting history, the Kansas State Wildcats and the Iowa State Cylcones matched up as Top 15 teams, with the Cyclones winning a thriller 80-76.

It was a back and forth affair for a majority of the night, with 13 lead changes and 7 ties. Both teams were extremely efficient offensively, with the Cyclones shooting 52% from the field, and Kansas State shooting 57% from the fioor.

Markquis Nowell had his seventh 20+ point performance of the season, dropping 23 points with 9 assists as well. Cam Carter had 15 points without missing a shot, and Keyontae Johnson ended with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Wildcats drop to 17-3 on the season, and suffer their second loss in conference play. They will return to the court on Saturday for the Big 12/SEC challenge with a matchup against the Florida Gators, Keyontae Johnson's former school.

The Kansas Jayhawks were unable to snap their mid-season funk on Monday night, losing 75-69 to the Baylor Bears in Waco.

It was a slow start for the Jayhawks, who trailed 20-7 eight minutes in. Although the defense tightened up and Kansas found a groove offensively, it was not enough on this night to overcome the Bears on the road.

Jayhawks coach Bill Self says although this 3-game losing skid matches the longest streak in his tenure, he thinks the team is finally starting to turn the corner.

Gradey Dick led Kansas with 24 points, and Jalen Wilson had 23 points as well. Kevin McCullar had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds on the night.

The Jayhawks will look towards the Big 12/SEC challenge, where they battle the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday.

 The Caney Bullpups got a much needed home victory, as they defeated the Eureka Tornadoes 34-25 Tuesday night. 
 

 Colt Hightower led the Pups with 17 points, including four crucial free throws down the stretch in the fourth quarter. Ben Matthews added seven points in the win. 

 Lyle Perrier led the Tornadoes with ten points, while Trey Howard added six. 
 

 The girls were defeated by the Lady Tornadoes 66-33. 

 Both teams will travel to Neodesha to take on the Blue Streaks Friday night. 
 

When Cherryvale and Neodesha last met, the Blue Streaks were able to keep it close and make the Chargers sweat for a win. Tonight Cherryvale got payback and left no doubt in our KGGF High School Game of the Week.

The Chargers topped the Blue Streaks 70-39, with Cherryvale improving to 8-4 on the season, and Neodesha falling to 2-11. Cherryvale is also now 3-0 against Neodesha this season.

The Chargers started the game on a 13-0 run, and silenced the home Neodesha crowd. The Blue Streaks would battle back, however, and got within 4 points late in the first half.

Cherryvale would pull away in the second half, in large part due to a gutsy effort from guard Stetson Schafer, who injured his ankle in the first half, but continued to play extremely well while in noticeable pain. Schafer had 19 points and 6 rebounds for the Chargers, while senior Brock Robertson also contributed 19 points for Cherryvale. Talon Roebuck had 11 for Neodesha, and Andrew Heck added 10 rebounds on the night.

Neodesha will take on Caney on Friday night, a game that can be heard on Greatest Hits 104.1 FM. Cherryvale will have a home game against Bluestem on Friday night as well.

A crucial step of exiting a rebuild and become a contending team is closing out games that are winnable. The Kansas City Royals addressed that by signing Aroldis Chapman, one of the MLB's most feared pitchers over the last decade, to a 1 year deal yesterday.

Chapman is a seven-time All Star who has spent time with the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, and most recently New York Yankees. He features a four pitch mix of a fastball, slider, changeup, and splitter.

When originally called up, Chapman's fastball reached speeds of up to 105 miles per hour. However, there have been some concerns about his velocity with age, as Chapman will turn 35 before Opening Day.

Chapman will set out to prove he has something left in the tank, and will be a critical part of the Royals bullpen this season.

Royals baseball begins when pitchers and catchers report on February 15th, with Opening Day on March 30th against the Minnesota Twins.

The Kansas City Chiefs are once again the team to beat in the AFC, and they will face the up-and-coming Jacksonville Jaguars at Arrowhead Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

The Chiefs finished the season 14-3, and enjoyed the luxuries of a potential Patrick Mahomes MVP season, as well as the dominance of All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce. The Jaguars won the AFC South at 9-8, and rallied from a 27-0 deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Chargers in the Wild Card round last weekend.

These two teams met in the regular season, with the Chiefs winning comfortably but not convincingly 27-17. Jacksonville saw a resurgent second half of the season, winning seven of their last eight games behind the experience of new head coach Doug Pederson, and the talent of young star quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

The key difference between these two teams is the experience. The Chiefs have been one of the NFL's elite for five seasons now, while the Jaguars are a very young and inexperienced team with a lack of big game reps.

The winner of this AFC Divisonal playoff game will face the winner of the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals game in the AFC championship next weekend.

The conference championship chase is on, and the Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens hit the road to face an extremely tough Garden City Broncbusters team tomorrow afternoon.

The Lady Ravens have won three in a row after their brief two game skid out of the break, and sit at 13-6 on the season, and 9-4 in KJCCC play. The Lady Broncbusters are on a downhill slide, losing five consecutive games and sitting just 3-10 in conference play.

Coffeyville won the first matchup between these two teams 80-59, behind 27 points from Kyleigh Ortiz, and 15 total 3-pointers as a team.

The men's team sits in 2nd place in the conference, and they will match up with a Garden City team that has surged into the Top 4 and is receiving votes for national ranking.

The first matchup led to a 87-79 victory for the Red Ravens, thanks to 33 points combined from Nathan Johnson and Soti Nafpliotis, who are also playing extremely well in the last two games.

Garden City has exceptional guard play, with Jaborri McGhee, DaJion Humphrey, and Boston Harker combining for 62 points in the first game. The Broncbusters average 84 points per game, and have seven different players average at least 7 points per game.

Following a tough loss to in-state rival Kansas State, the Kansas Jayhawks return home to Lawrence where a tough TCU Horned Frogs team awaits them.

The Jayhawks are 16-2 this season, with a perfect 10-0 mark at home. The Horned Frogs enter 14-4, and are 2-2 in Big 12 play. TCU does have an impressive 82-68 win over Kansas State on their resume.

The Jayhawks and Horned Frogs could not be anymore evenly matched on paper, with nearly identical statistics in points per game, points against, field goal percentage, rebounds, and assists. Both teams are also coming off of road losses in their previous game.

Mike Miles Jr. leads TCU and averages 19.1 points per contest. He had an unconvential off night against Kansas State last weekend, and will look to prove himself as one of the elite scorers in the conference against premiere competition. He will be defended mostly by the duo of Dajuan Harris and Gradey Dick, who are the two focal points of the Jayhawks backcourt.

The Kansas State Wildcats snapped a 7-game losing streak to the Kansas Jayhawks on Tuesday, and look to continue the momentum tomorrow as they take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

The Wildcats enter with a 16-2 record and are at the top of the Big 12 conference with a 5-1 conference record. The Red Raiders have struggled to open Big 12 play, sitting 0-6 in league play with a 10-8 overall record. Texas Tech has been slightly unlucky however, losing games to Kansas, Texas, Baylor, and Oklahoma by five points or less.

The Red Raiders are led by senior Kevin Obanor, a former March Madness cinderella star at Oral Roberts. Texas Tech matches up well with the Wildcats, featuring an explosive offense, as well as a stout defense.

The matchup to watch out for is between Obanor and Kansas State senior Keyontae Johnson, who is coming off of a 24 point performance against the Jayhawks. These two have very similar size and scoring ability, and this game may come down to who wins this particular matchup.

The Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens completed the season sweep of the Cowley Tigers last night, with the Lady Ravens and the men's team both keeping pace in the conference championship chase.

The Lady Ravens were able to hold on in Game 1 with a final score of 72-67. The Ravens had a 20 point lead in the 3rd quarter, but the Tigers battled back, outscoring Coffeyville 29-19 in the final frame.

The Red Ravens struggled at the free throw line for a majority of the contest, but when it mattered most freshman Tetona Woods-Blackowl was able to convert on four consecutive free throws.

The Lady Ravens improve to 13-6 on the season, and 9-4 in conference play. They will face Garden City on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The men's team won Game 2 and completed the doubleheader sweep with a 87-71 victory over Cowley.

For the second consecutive game, the Red Ravens jumped out to a 20 point halftime lead, one that they wouldn't relinquish. Six different CCC players scored at least 11 points, led by Soti Nafpliotis who had 15. The Ravens shot 61% from the floor as a team on the night.

The Red Ravens improve to 15-4, with a 9-4 conference record. They sit in 2nd place with a matchup Saturday against 4th place Garden City at 4 p.m.

It's a top 15 showdown in the Big 12 tomorrow night, as the #2 ranked Kansas Jayhawks travel to Manhattan to battle the #13 Kansas State Wildcats.

The Jayhawks enter on a 10 game winning streak, and the last unbeaten team in conference play. The Wildcats are 15-2 on the season, and looking to avenge their first Big 12 loss on Saturday against TCU.

Both of these programs are evenly matched offensively and defensively. Both teams average over 75 points per game, as well as allow fewer than 67 points per game.

The star power will be on full display in this game as well as a pair of the top forwards in the nation square off. Jalen Wilson averages 19.8 points per game for the Jayhawks, and is their most consistent player on a nightly basis. The Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens were able to defend Nellis Hall on Saturday, with a doubleheader sweep against the Mavericks of Northwest Kansas Tech.

The Lady Ravens took Game 1 by a final score of 59-47. The Ravens offense continued to struggle with efficiency, however the defense was sensational, forcing 14 turnovers and pulling down 60 rebounds as a team. Cheyenne Banks was the best player for CCC, with 12 points and 21 rebounds on the afternoon. Kyleigh Ortiz led the Ravens in scoring with 18.

The men's team was able to snap a two game losing streak by winning Game 2 of the doubleheader against the Mavericks 92-72. The Ravens scored 52 points in the first half, and took a commanding 21 point lead to the locker room. Soti Nafpliotis led the Red Ravens with 18 points on six 3-pointers and Izek Jackson had 10 points and 14 rebounds off the bench. 

The Red Ravens also both gain ground in the conference standings, with teams in front of them losing. The Lady Ravens are in a tie for 4th place with Hutchinson, and sit only one game back from 2nd place after a Barton County loss. The men are in a tie for 2nd place with Butler, and two games behind Dodge City after their loss on Saturday.

The KGGF high school basketball game of the week delivered in a big way tonight, as the Humboldt Cubs remain unbeaten at 9-0 after defeating Cherryvale 47-46.

The Cubs outplayed the Chargers fairly convincingly in the first half, leading 24-14 at the break. Humboldt used the momentum and energy of the home crowd, as well as rare mistakes and turnovers from Cherryvale, to build a comfortable halftime lead.

The Chargers opened the second half with a 14-3 run to take a lead halfway through the third quarter. From there, it was an intense back and forth battle that saw numerous lead changes and ties.

When it mattered most, with 3.5 seconds left in the game, the lone senior on Humboldt's roster Trey Sommer was able to drill a game-winning shot over the outstretched arm of two defenders. The Cubs were lead by 12 points and 16 rebounds from Sommer, and sophomore Colden Cook was spectacular shooting 7-9 from the floor.

On a rare off night from Trevin Elam and Stetson Schafer, the Chargers were led by a pair of seniors who answered the call when desperately needed. Brock Robertson and Danny Vigil both kept Cherryvale from digging too large of a hole in the first half, and were cogs in the Cherryvale train attempting a massive comeback in the third quarter.

The Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens have lost consecutive games in frustrating fashion following a major win over Cloud County out of the break. They look to snap the skid in a matchup with the Northwest Kansas Tech Mavericks tomorrow afternoon.

The Red Ravens enter with a 13-4 record and are 7-4 in conference play, while the Mavericks are 7-9 and 3-8 in KJCCC play.

The Mavericks average 75 points per game as a team, and have a trio of players in Taiden Conner, Keyishon Miller, and Ethan Yancy who all average at least 13 points per contest.

After snapping a two game losing skid on Wednesday with a road win over Seward County, the Coffeyville Community College Lady Ravens look to bring the momentum back to Nellis Hall for a weekend game with Northwest Kansas Tech.

The Lady Ravens are 11-6 with a 7-4 conference record. The Mavericks enter with a 5-11 record and have had a tough conference season, just 1-10 in KJCCC play.

The Ravens were able to force turnovers against the Saints on Wednesday, and got just enough out of shooters Kyleigh Ortiz, Kennady Roach, and Bailey Layman to squeak out a tight win. They will look to continue improving on offensive consistency and limiting turnovers and foul trouble.

The Mavericks have struggled on the offensive end this season, averaging just 53 points per game. They do, however, attack the paint with their three leading scorers, all forwards, who account for nearly half of their team point total.

The Friday night High School Game of the Week brings us to Humboldt as the Cubs host the Cherryvale Chargers tonight on the Mighty 690.

The Chargers are 4-3 on the season and defeated Neodesha at home 66-50 last week. The Chargers feature an extremely talented backcourt with both skill and experience, with junior Stetson Schafer, senior Trevin Elam, and senior Brock Robertson.

Humboldt head coach Dave Taylor says that his young defense will be tested often defending the skilled backcourt of the Chargers.

Humboldt enters this matchup unbeaten at 8-0 on the season, and is coming off of an impressive 66-53 win over Fredonia earlier this week. The Cubs are a tough matchup physically, as their three leading scorers are all at least 6'2" tall.

Senior Trey Sommer leads the Cubs averaging nearly 18 points per game, and junior Sam Hull as well as sophomore Colden Cook also average double digit point totals each night.

Chargers head coach Rodney Vigil says that he has nothing but respect for Coach Taylor and what he's done with the Humboldt program.

The #11 Kansas State Wildcats continue to creep closer to the Top 10, and will have another tough matchup against #17 TCU in Fort Worth on Saturday.

The Wildcats enter with a 15-1 record, their best start in 64 years, and are undefeated in conference play with statement wins over Baylor, Texas, and Oklahoma State. The Horned Frogs enter 13-3 with a 2-2 conference record, with losses to Iowa State and Texas.

The Horned Frogs, much like Kansas State's previous opponent Oklahoma State, features a top tier defense in the conference, allowing just 64 points per game. The team is constructed to do a majority of damage inside the paint, blocking shots and rebounding on defense, and scoring inside on offense. TCU struggles to shoot the 3-pointer, below 30% as a team from beyond the arc this season.

This game will feature a matchup of a pair of Top 3 scorers in the Big 12 this season. Junior guard Mike Miles Jr. of TCU is 2nd in the conference averaging 19 points per game, while Wildcats star forward Keyontae Johnson is 3rd in the Big 12 averaging 17.9 points per game.

The #2 Kansas Jayhawks return to Lawrence and look to improve to 10-0 this season inside Allen Fieldhouse, as they battle #14 Iowa State on Saturday.

The Jayhawks enter this matchup with a 15-1 record and undefeated in conference play, while the Cyclones are 13-2 and also undefeated in Big 12 play. Iowa State has collected impressive wins over TCU, Oklahoma, and most recently a 34 point win over Texas Tech.

The Cyclones feature impressive depth, with eight different players averaging at least 6 points per game. Although not a great rebounding team, Iowa State is one of the best in the Big 12 in assists per game, as well as limiting turnovers.

A key player for Iowa State is graduate transfer Osun Osuniyi. The senior big man averages 8 points per game, but currently has 316 career blocks, and has averaged at least 2.4 blocks per game every season of his career. Osuniyi is known as one of the most dominant rim protectors in the nation, and has consistently been viewed as an NBA prospect.

An evening of mixed results for the Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens led to a doubleheader split on the road against Seward County last night.

The Lady Ravens were able to snap a two game losing skid with a 67-53 win. The Ravens played exceptional defense, limiting the Saints to just 26% from the floor, and were able to do just enough offensively to squeak out a win.

Bailey Layman led the Ravens with 12 points including four three pointers. Kennady Roach and Cheyenne Banks each had 10 points in the win as well.

The men's team suffered their second consecutive defeat, unable to hold an eight point halftime lead in an 82-78 loss to Seward County.

Hayden Brittingham and Landon Glasper had rare poor performances, combining for only 11 points on 4-13 shooting. The Red Ravens also struggled from the free throw line, making just 12 of 22 attempts (55%) over the course of the game. 

The Red Ravens return to Nellis Hall on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader with the Northwest Kansas Tech Mavericks. Coverage will begin at 2 p.m. on KUSN 98.1 FM.

Field Kindley splits both games in Chanute with the Lady Nado falling 39-32 and the boys winning 44-41.

The Lady Nado would find themselves in control in the first half leading 19-17 at the half. A strong second half would see Chanute gain the lead 26-23 after the third quarter and then push the lead even further in the fourth taking control of the game down the stretch. Coffeyville had three players scoring in the double digits accounting for all 32 points. Taiylor Caron and Chaunte Porter had 11 a piece and Kaylin Caron added 10.

It was a different tale of two halves for the Nado boys who saw themselves trail by double digits in the first half. The Blue Comets were led by some sharpshooting in the second quarter by Jordan Duncan, who had all 12 of his points in the quarter from beyond the arc including three straight to push the lead to 10. Coffeyville would mount their comeback in the second half with a run in the third quarter led by Jamarrion Logan and Jairmique Shobe. With just under six minutes left in the fourth, JoJo Hernandez tied the game back up for the first time since the first quarter with a big three-pointer. After tying it up in the fourth the game stayed around a three-point game with Chanute maintaining control. After a Coffeyville turnover and a Kaiden Seamster dunk in transition, it put the Comets back up by 3. Jake Horner and Tunstall would answer back and put the exclamation point on the night for the Nado. Tunstall, who led the Nado with 10 points, would sink the and one free throw putting the Nado up by three and securing the win. Coffeyville is back in action on Friday at home against Fort Scott.  

 The Caney Valley Bullpups traveled to Erie to take on the Red Devils in a men's and women's basketball matchup.

 Caney's girls team used great rebounding and Erie's foul trouble to come away with a 52-29 victory. The ladies improve to 2-4 on the season. 
 
 In the nightcap, Ethan Dillinger had 23 points and Reid Duff added 18, as the Erie boys defeated Caney 58-33.

 Colt Hightower led the Bullpups with 16 points, while Austin Carinder added six. 
 The men fall to 1-5 on the season. 
 Both men's and women's teams are getting ready for homecoming, as the Wyandotte Bears come to town Friday night. 

The Kansas State Wildcats are 14-1 and off to their best start in 64 years as they head into a matchup with Oklahoma State.

The Cowboys enter with a record of 9-6 on the season, and 1-2 in Big 12 play. The Wildcats swept the conference player of the week awards for the first time in school history, with Markquis Nowell earning Player of the Week, and Keyontae Johnson winning Newcomer of the Week.

Nowell continues to play like the best player in the conference after posting 32 points and 14 assists in the overtime win against Baylor. Nowell is 2nd in Divison 1, averaging 8.9 assists per game.

The Wildcats also feature one of the most lethal trios in the country, with Nowell, Johnson, and Nae'Qwan Tomlin averaging 47.2 points per game combined on 49% shooting.

Oklahoma State is a league average offensive team averaging 69.3 points per game, but features a quick and challenging defense that is one of the premiere units in the Big 12. The Cowboys defense is 3rd nationally in field goal percentage, 17th in blocks per game, and 28th in scoring defense.

Fresh off moving up to the #2 ranked team in the country, the 14-1 Kansas Jayhawks continue their Big 12 slate with the Oklahoma Sooners in Lawrence.

The Sooners enter with a 10-5 record on the season, and a 1-2 record in conference play. Oklahoma doesn't have the offensive firepower that the Jayhawks feature, but the Sooners do boast one of the toughest defenses in the Big 12, averagine just 61 points per game allowed.

Oklahoma is led by 2nd year head coach Porter Moser, the former coach of the Cinderella squad Loyola Chicago Ramblers that reached the Final Four. Jayhawks coach Bill Self says that Oklahoma gave the team tough games a year ago, and he is impressed with their recent road win.

The Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens return to the hardwood tomorrow night to face off with the Seward County Saints on the road.

The Red Ravens are looking to bounce back after dropping a doubleheader to Pratt over the weekend. The Seward County Lady Saints enter with a 7-4 conference record and the men's team enters with a 5-6 conference record.

The Lady Ravens will face a Seward team that has struggled to shoot the basketball over the course of the season, but has improved in nearly every offensive statistic since the start of conference play. The top scorer for the Saints is D'Aarah Allen at nearly 16 points per contest.

On the men's side, Seward County consistently outrebounds their opponents, but at times can hurt themselves with self-inflicted errors such as turnovers and missed free throws.

 The Caney Valley Bullpups traveled to Riverton Friday night; the Lady Pups were defeated 25-23, and the men lost 58-37.

 
 Colton Thomas led all scorers with 19 for the Rams, and Jamey Richardson added seven. 

 Colt Hightower had 17 in the loss; Ben Matthews added 12 for the Pups. Both teams fell to 1 and 4 on the season. 
 
 The teams will travel to Erie Tuesday in a non-district matchup. 

Fresh off of a convincing 25-point win against Cloud County that gave them sole possession of 2nd place, the Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens battle the Pratt Beavers on the road.

The Red Ravens are 7-2 in KJCCC play, just one game behind first place Dodge City. Pratt enters in a tie for 8th place, with a 4-5 conference record.

Pratt displays a dynamic offense that can score from both inside and outside the 3-point line, and average nearly 80 points per game. Red Raven Coach Jay Herkelman has been proud of the way his team has defended this season, but says he knows that Pratt will bring a tough challenge.

The Red Ravens are paced by the forward play of Jordan Wildy and Hayden Brittingham, two of the most talented players in the conference. There are question marks however, with Brittingham just one game removed from a foot injury, and Wildy rolling his ankle in the previous game and not at 100%

CCC has appeared as a national championship contender at times this season, but will look to keep pace with the best teams in the nation as they travel to Pratt.

CCC currently sits in a tie for 4th place in the KJCCC with a record of 6-3 in conference play, while Pratt enters the contest with a 4-5 conference record.

The game features a matchup of a pair of Top 3 teams in the conference in 3-point shooting, with Pratt the top shooting team, and the Lady Ravens third best.

Pratt also boasts the top scorer in the conference in freshman Princess Anderson, averaging 23 points per game. Lady Raven Coach Tony Turner says she'll be the focus of the defensive gameplan for CCC.

The Kansas State Wildcats are off to a 13-1 start under Jerome Tang, the best start for a first year head coach in Wildcats basketball history.

After a massive win against the Texas Longhorns in Austin, KState stays in the state of Texas and travels to Waco to battle the 19th ranked Baylor Bears.

The Wildcats have been led by a pair of seniors this season, with Markquis Nowell and Florida transfer Keyontae Johnson combing for 34 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists per night. Kansas State also boasts solid depth with Nae'Qwan Tomlin, Desi Sills, David N'Guessan, and Cam Carter all putting up at least 7 points per game as well.

Baylor is coming off of a heartbreaking loss to TCU in their last game, and looking to snap a two game losing streak. The Bears have senior point guard Adam Flagler, who was a vital piece of the national championship team, leading the backcourt. However, their top scorer and maybe most impressive player is true freshman Keyonte George, who average 16 points a night.

With a win, the Wildcats would have three consecutive wins against ranked opponents, and would skyrocket into the national Top 25 next week.

The 3rd ranked Kansas Jayhawks will face their toughest test yet in the young conference season as they head to Morgantown to battle West Virginia.

KU comes in with a record of 13-1, while the Mountaineers boast a 10-4 record. Both teams average over 75 points per game and have strong defenses that allow less than 70 points a contest.

West Virginia is an exceptional rebounding team, led by the senior frontcourt of Tre Mitchell and Emmitt Matthews Jr. The Mountaineers are also looking to snap a two game losing streak after dropping previous games to Kansas State and Oklahoma State on the road.

The Jayhawks will turn to one of the best players in America in junior Jalen Wilson to neutralize the WVU bigs. Wilson is averaging 20.6 points per game and 8.6 rebounds per game as well for Kansas.

The Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens silenced any doubters, and made a championship statement last night in a 78-53 win over the nationally ranked Cloud County Thunderbirds.

The first half was a defensive battle that saw both teams shoot under 40% from the field. In the second half, each team found their groove offensively, but it was far too late for the Thunderbirds to battle back against a Red Raven team that was locked in on this night.

Landon Glasper picked up right where he left off prior to the break, leading the Ravens with 14 points. CCC also got one of their veteran leaders back in Hayden Brittingham, who showed no signs of rust after a six-week absence and added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Ravens also knocked down 13 3-pointers in this game, led by five from guard Sotirios Nafpliotis. It was a suffocating performance that lived up to the championship pedigree and expectations of this program.

The Red Ravens now stand alone in 2nd place in the KJCCC, only a single game behind Dodge City for the top spot. They will return to the hardwood on Saturday at 4 p.m. with a matchup against the Pratt Beavers on the road. All CCC games can be heard on KUSN all season long.

There was obvious rust to be shaken off after the holiday break for the Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens as they drop to Cloud County by a final score of 70-53.

The Lady Ravens found themselves in an early deficit of double digit points, and spent most of the night attempting to chip away, but could only get as close as five. A combination of 18 turnovers, 19 fouls committed, and being outrebounded added up to an ugly performance that Coffeyville will look to learn from and move on quickly.

Kyleigh Ortiz led the Lady Ravens with 12 points, on a night where CCC only shot 28% from the floor and 19% from behind the arc. Maimouna Sissoko was the star of the night for the Thunderbirds, with 25 points and six rebounds in 23 minutes. After missing the previous four games due to injury, Sissoko was the most dominant player on the floor in Nellis Hall.

A positive takeaway from this otherwise forgetful performance was that the Lady Ravens appear to be finally at full health. Both freshman guard Bailey Layman and freshman guard Tetona Woods-Blackowl returned after suffering injuries before the break.

The Lady Ravens will have an opportunity to bounce back and will hit the road to challenge the Pratt Beavers on Saturday at 2 p.m. All CCC games all season long can be heard on KUSN.

The Sedan Blue Devils improved to 5-1 on the season, defeating the Neodesha Blue Streaks 43-24 in the KGGF High School Game of the Week.

Sedan continues to display strong defense and speed, limiting Neodesha leading scorer Rylan Allen to just four total points on the night. The Blue Devils also utilized their strong size down low, with forwards Kota Blankenship and Walt Gooden controlling the paint for a majority of the game.

The star of the night, however, was junior guard Lyndon Sears, who came off the bench to score 17 points and add 5 assists as well. From the moment Sears entered the game, the offense ran through him and was fast and efficient.

Neodesha will look to rebound from the loss with a trip to rival Cherryvale on Friday night. The matchup between the Neodesha Blue Streaks and the Cherryvale Chargers will be featured as the KGGF Game of the Week and you can catch all the action on the Mighty 690.

 The Independence Bulldogs traveled to Coffeyville Tuesday night and took a pair of games from the Nado; the Lady Bulldogs won 28-20, while the guys won the nightcap 45-34.

 A 16-point third quarter helped seal the win for the Lady Bulldogs; Abby Viele led all scorers with 11 points, while Rylie Reichenberger added 10.

 Savannah Vietz led the Nado with six, while Kaylin Caron added four. The Lady Nado fall to 1-2 on the season. They'll travel to Parsons this Friday night.

 The guys completed the sweep, as Easton Ewing hit clutch free throws down the stretch for the Bulldogs. He led all scoring with 21 points, while Jamason Jaringan added eight.

 There were many bright spots to the Nado offense; Brayson Voss led the Nado with ten points; Joseph ignited the crowd with eight points, all in the third quarter, including a couple of threes.

 The Nado are 0-2 on the season; they'll also travel to Parsons Friday night.

The Kansas State Wildcats could find themselves in the AP Top 25 rankings this week for the first time in the Jerome Tang era, after rallying to edge West Virginia 82-76 in overtime on Saturday.

The Wildcats trailed by 11 points at the half, and held off the Mountaineers in the bonus period after a 3-point shot at the buzzer tied the game at 66.

It was perhaps the best performance of the season for Markquis Nowell, who led Kansas State with 23 points, 10 assists, and seven steals on the night. Keyontae Johnson also contributed 18 points and six rebounds for the Wildcats.

Coach Jerome Tang says that after West Virginia seized momentum early, his team was able to regroup and focus on playing gritty and physical basketball.

Tang has been appreciative of the fan base support since the beginning of the season, and says that it once again gave the team adrenaline to battle back with a tough West Virginia team.

The Wildcats are 12-1 on the season, and will travel to Austin for a game with the 6th ranked Texas Longhorns tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 7 p.m. on the Mighty 690, KGGF AM.

The 4th ranked Jayhawks won their Big 12 opener Saturday in dramatic fashion, erasing a 15-point halftime deficit to edge Oklahoma State.

Sophomore forward K.J. Adams Jr. was able to capitalize on the game-winning layup with just three seconds remaining to give Kansas their 12th win of the season.

Kansas was trailing for a majority of the game, taking the lead for the first time in the 2nd half with just six minutes to go. Jalen Wilson led the Jayhawks with 20 points, and Adams followed with 14.

Jayhawks Coach Bill Self says that Adams may be among the most improved players on the roster, and that his contributions have increased since the end of last season.

The Jayhawks remain unbeaten at home this season and will return to the court tomorrow night for a showdown with the conference rival Texas Tech Red Raiders. Game coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on Greatest Hits 104.1 FM.
