Carolyn

Carolyn “Sue” Stultz, age 83, of Caney, Kansas passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2024 at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. 

 

Sue was born in Niotaze, Kansas to Benton and Dorothy (Moffit) Flesher.  She grew up in Niotaze where she attended local schools. 

 

A woman with a heart of gold, Sue was a kind, loving and generous to all who knew her.  In addition to raising her five children, she worked as a group leader for Automotive Control Corporation for many years.

 

In her free time, Sue enjoyed gardening, quilting, reading, her dogs, and tending to her koi pond.  Most of all she loved her family and the time she spent surrounded by them. 

 

Those surviving to cherish her memory are her loving children, Cindy (Marty) Short of Seminole, Oklahoma, Willie (Rita) Stultz of Tyro, Kansas, Michael (Rosailand) Stultz of Niotaze, Kansas, Joe Stultz of Niotaze, Kansas, Jerry (Cassandra) Stultz of Bixby, Oklahoma; thirteen grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren along with many extended relatives and friends.  Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Benton and Dorothy Flesher, sisters, Betty Melican and Louise Ranabarger and a brother, Sonny Flesher. 

 

Following Sue’s wishes, cremation is to take place under the direction of David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville, Kansas. 

 

A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Niotaze on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at 10:00 a.m.  Pastor Brad Sanders will officiate. 

 

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions can be made to the Chautauqua County Animal Shelter P. O. Box 232, Sedan, KS 67361; these may also be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home 306 N. Cline Rd. Coffeyville, KS 67337.

Dorothy

Dorothy “Dottie” M. McVey, age 86, passed away on Friday, September 20, 2024, at her son and daughter-in-law's home under the care of the wonderful staff of Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.

 

Dottie was born February 28, 1938, in Iola, KS to the late Merle and Mamie (Houk) Mann.  She grew up in that area and attended school in Moran, KS where she graduated high school.

 

On August 18, 1956, she married the love of her life, Vernon “Mac” McVey, in La Harpe, KS.  They started their family in Moran where they raised their two boys.  In 1978, they moved to Coffeyville, KS.

 

Dottie enjoyed dancing, sewing and spending time with her family and friends.  She and Mac loved dancing together and never missed an opportunity to be on the dance floor, especially when George Strait’s “Amarillo by Morning” was played.  Line dancing was another effortless talent of hers and many would jump at the chance to join her.  After Mac’s retirement, the two of them spent several winters in south Texas enjoying time with their friends. 

 

She was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church in Coffeyville. She was also a proud member of the VFW Post #1022 Women's Auxiliary and often enjoyed being involved in those activities. 

 

Surviving to honor her memory is her son, Ron McVey and wife Teresa of rural Caney, KS, daughter-in-law, Genette McVey of Coffeyville, seven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and a twin brother Donald Mann of Moran.  Dottie was proceeded in death by her parents, son Chris McVey, sister Maxine Call and brothers Delbert Mann and Kenneth Mann.

 

Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 29, 2024, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at David W. Barnes Funeral Home. The funeral service will take place at Holy Name Catholic Church on Monday, September 30, 2024, at 11:00 am.  Dottie will be laid to rest next to her husband, Mac, Monday, September 30, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. at Moran Cemetery.

 

The family suggests memorial contributions can be made to the VFW Post #1022 Auxiliary.  Contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W Barnes Funeral Home 306 N Cline Rd, Coffeyville, KS 67337.

Rosalie June Sturgeon

Rosalie June Sturgeon, 92, of Independence, passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at The Journey Home in Bartlesville, Oklahoma

 

She was born on December 8, 1931, in the Sycamore Valley area of Montgomery County. She attended school through the 8th grade at Sycamore and completed her education graduating from Independence High School.

 

On August 5, 1952, she married Gerald Sturgeon, and they had three children. The couple later divorced in 2004.

 

When Rosalie was younger, she worked at Lee's Jeans in Cherryvale and became a self-employed house cleaner later in life. This was a testament to her hard work and determination. In her leisure time, Rosalie found joy in playing cards with different groups. She was also an active member of the 60 Club in Independence, where she served as president on several occasions, she was also a member of Tyro Christian Church and the JOY Group at her church. Despite her various roles, what mattered most to Rosalie were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her love for them was a constant, a beacon of light that guided her throughout her life.

 

Rosalie is survived by her children, Donna Countryman and husband, Jim, Diane McCartney, and Gary Sturgeon, and wife, Cassie. Her legacy will continue through her six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Harry Barker, and sister, Martha Dawson.

 

Rosalie was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Rosa Barker, her sisters, Helen Truitt and Frankie Swango, and her son-in-law, David McCartney.

 

Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.

 

A Funeral service celebrating Rosalie's life will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at the Tyro Christian Church in Tyro Kanas with Evangelist David Bycroft officiating.  Burial will follow in Harrisonville Cemetery north of Tyro.

 

The family suggests memorials in Rosalie's memory to Tyro Christian Church; contributions may be left with or mailed in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Rose, Coffeyville, KS 67337.

Patricia

Patricia “Patsy” Anne Pippin, age 79, formerly of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at her home in Webb City, Missouri, with her children and sister by her side.

 

Patsy was born on September 28, 1944, in Coffeyville, Kansas to Eugene and Edith (Carter) Cochran.  She grew up in Coffeyville where she attended local schools and graduated from Field Kindley High School. 

 

In addition to raising her kids, Patsy was a hard worker.  She owned and operated a bait shop.  Over the years she also worked at Hardee’s, the City of Coffeyville as a police dispatcher, at the CRMC snack shop, owned and operated the Bait Shop, and Family Dollar, before finally retiring from Casey's.  Patsy enjoyed playing Bingo, shooting pool and playing in pool leagues, bowling, going to the lake and fishing. 

 

Surviving to cherish her memory are her children, Laresa Lukens and husband, Roy of Coffeyville, Kansas, Gary Pippin of Webb City, Missouri, grandchildren, Sara Lukens (Christopher Robb), Samantha Stair (Corey), great grandchildren, Jayra, Ashton and Skylar Davis, Tyler, Carsen, Cloey and Caylee Stair; her sister, Linda Pippin of Owasso, Oklahoma along with many extended relatives and friends. 

 

Following Patsy’s wishes, cremation is to take place under the direction of David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. 

 

A Graveside Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 20, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the Veteran’s Patio at Fairview Cemetery in Coffeyville.  Pastor Albertis Bray of Southview Church of God will officiate.

 

Friends may sign the register book on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.

Durleeta M. Smith

Durleeta M. Smith, 66, affectionately known as Dee, passed away on Monday, September 9, 2024, at her home. She was born on June 2, 1958, in Kermit, Texas, to Grover Lee and Marcella Geraldine "Marcy" (Williams) Gorrell. Dee resided in Coffeyville, Kansas, at the time of her passing. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Dee's love and dedication to her family was a testament to her strong spirit and tender heart.

 

In 1994 she married Frank Smith at the Southern Baptist Church in Dearing.  Following their marriage, they made their home in the Coffeyville area.

 

She lived a fulfilling life, with stints in rural Peru, Kansas, Pawhuska, and Barnsdall, Oklahoma, and had spent the last 38 years in the Dearing and Coffeyville area. After moving to the Coffeyville area, she was employed at Acme Foundry for many years. Although she was passionate about her work, she also found joy in simple pleasures. Dee was fond of watching Forensic Files and Lifetime movies and going rummage selling, her husband even took her a few time before her passing, hobbies that allowed her to unwind and relax.

 

Dee is survived by her loving husband, Frank Smith, her cherished children Karl Anderson, Marcella Luckey, Josh Anderson, Rebekah Wallace, and Sherri Buie. She was a proud grandmother to twenty-nine grandchildren, Shawndra, Kelsey, Christopher, Harmony, Aria, Jade, Kinsle, Sabbastian, Domanique, Titus, Rhylie, Raegan, Gavin, Trey, Evelyn Kobi, Zade, Nickolie, Kyan, Kaven, Trenton, Eli, Aiden, Ashlynn, Jossluyn, Joel, Paul Jr., Matthew and Maddison, and eight great-grandchildren, Desmond, Ava, Emilia, Chloe, Serenity, Cordell, Eternity, and Cece all of whom she adored. Dee was preceded in death by her father, Grover Gorrell, her mother, Marcella Miller, and her sister, Marleeta Ehret. What mattered most to Dee was her family, particularly her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will miss her deeply.

 

A memorial service celebrating Dee's life will be on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Church of God, 2010 W. First St., in Coffeyville. Following the service there will be a dinner for family and friends, they ask that you bring your favorite dish.

Lorraine Mildred Gaskell

Lorraine Mildred Gaskell, 94, of Derby, Ks, went to be with her Lord and Savior Friday, September 13, 2024. 

She was born on a farm near Clifton, Kansas, on December 5, 1929, to Gilbert and Mary Piper. At the age of 12, she moved to a farm near Overbrook, Kansas. She graduated from Overbrook Rural High School in 1948 and then attended Kansas State University for two years. On August 13, 1950, she married Luther James Gaskell at Overbrook Methodist Church and went on to have a daughter, Barbara Kay Parker of Wichita, Kansas and Daniel Kent Gaskell of Tyler, Texas. They lived in various places, including Altamont, Kansas and Horton, Kansas, before settling in Chanute, Kansas, in 1971.

She was a devoted member of Westview Baptist Church, where she spent many years volunteering in the church library and nursery. She was actively involved in the Mary/Martha Sunday School class, the Holly Study Club, the F.C.E., and NARFE (National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association). As a dedicated mother and wife, she spent her time sewing, participating in 4-H and Girl Scouts with her daughter, and introducing her son to tennis—a passion he still pursues today.  Her hobbies included doll and teddy bear collections. One of her most cherished qualities was her thoughtful tradition of remembering the birthdays of friends and family. She always made sure to send a card with a heartfelt note, brightening their special days with her warmth and affection.

Lorraine is survived by her devoted husband of 74 years, Jim; her two children, Barbara and Dan (married to Cindy); and seven grandchildren: Tony Parker of Kansas, Jason Phillips (married to Heather) of Minnesota, Brenda Perdue of Kentucky, Candace Showalter (married to Justin) of Kansas, Kat Phipps of Kansas, Candace Carlson (married to Kevin) of California, and Chelsea Reiswig (married to Jason) of Kansas. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren: Ady and Ainsley Phillips (parents Jason and Heather), Alexander and Jack Perdue (parents John and Brenda), Connor and Gavin Showalter (parents Candace and Justin), and Brecken and Maddox Reiswig (parents Chelsea and Jason).

She was predeceased by her parents, Gilbert H. and Mary J. Piper, and her sister, Wilma Mabel Thompson.

In lieu of flowers, Lorraine requested that contributions be made to Westview Baptist Church, a place that held a special place in her heart. Graveside services will be held on Friday, September 20th at 11:00 am at Neosho County Memorial Park Cemetery, (aka, Greenlawn, or Restlawn). Funeral services have been entrusted to Countryside Funeral Home.

 

Harold Laverne Wilson

Harold Laverne Wilson age 94 passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2024 in Coffeyville, Kansas at Medicalodges on Midland where he has resided for the last year.

Laverne was born in South Coffeyville, Oklahoma to Otis “Bus” and Neta Harriet (Webb) Wilson on December 29, 1929.  Around the age of four Laverne moved with his parents and sister Jessie to the Hazard Wilson Read farm where his parents became full time care takers of the farm.  Laverne and Jessie attended Colony 101 School, north of Coffeyville.  Laverne loved the farm and working alongside his dad learning every task necessary.  Upon completing his schooling, he worked full time with his dad on the farm until they moved to town in 1948. He then was employed by Coffeyville Packing Company for a while before becoming a maintenance man at Medicalodges on first street until his retirement.

Laverne married Mary Ann Applegate and of that union one son was born, Doug Wilson.  The couple later divorced. 

In his younger years he enjoyed bowling, he was quite good, always ready and willing to travel to area tournaments with his teammates.  In Laverne’s spare time he could be found watching old westerns and wrestling.

Laverne and his family were members of the Pentecostal Holiness Church and later Emmanuel Chapel in South Coffeyville.  He and his sister Jessie Russell were faithful attenders until just about 4 years ago.  Covid and the need to give up driving made attending difficult.

For all that knew Laverne will remember his quiet nature, that he was an independent man that didn’t shy away from hard work.

Laverne leaves behind his son Doug Wilson, two grandchildren, Tyler and Morgan, sister Jessie Russell, nephews Stephen Russell and his wife Beverly, Tony Russell and his wife Kay, Denny Russell and Brenda, niece Mary and her husband Chuck Ballew, several great nieces, nephews and extended family members.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded death by his brother-in-law Floyd Russell.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at 10am prior to Funeral Services beginning at 10:30am at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel, 2405 Woodland Ave., Coffeyville, KS.  Laverne will be laid to rest next to his parents in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery immediately following services. The family request memorial contributions be made payable to either Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice or Emmanuel Chapel in South Coffeyville and may be left in care of the chapel.
