Kendall S. Garton

Kendall S. Garton, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, departed from this world unexpectedly on January 27, 2025, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center, leaving behind cherished memories and profound influences.

Kendall

Born on August 8, 1958, in Wichita, Kansas, to Lindley L. and Arlene Rose (Birch) Garton, Kendall flourished in the vibrant community of Wichita. A proud graduate of Wichita East High School, he later honed his academic journey at Butler Community College before earning his bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays University. Throughout his childhood and teenage years, he embraced a life of engagement, taking part in various activities including DeMolay and Boy Scouts, where he proudly achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.  Kendall was also an enthusiastic Nebraska huskers and Kansas City Chiefs fan.

Kendall’s career was marked by a deep-seated passion for orthopedics, a field in which he dedicated 22 fruitful years. Starting his journey in Wichita, he thrived as an Orthopedic Tech, working alongside skilled physicians. Though he briefly diverged to serve the Montgomery County Attorney’s office, the draw of his true calling brought him back to orthopedics, reflecting his unwavering commitment to helping others.

In the embrace of love, Kendall found his soulmate in Nancy (Clough) Garton, whom he married on April 29, 2006. Their bond, forged in friendship became an enduring partnership that weathered life’s storms. He was her steadfast supporter, her travel companion, and her source of comfort through all of life’s challenges. Together, they carved out a home in Coffeyville, where the warmth of their love welcomed friends and family alike.

Kendall embraced Nancy’s three sons – Jason, Brandon and James whom he loved as his own. He was more than a stepfather, he cultivated a profound fatherly presence, offering steadfast guidance and encouragement. Kendall shared special adventures with Jason as the pilot, Jason may never have known how scared Kendall really was but would have done anything to show how much he trusted him.  Jason, Brandon and James shared the same interest as Kendall being active inDeMolay (a youth leadership organization, striving to shape young men into leaders of character.) and Boy Scouts with Jason, and James also obtaining the rank of Eagle.

Family vacations became cherished traditions, with memories woven together in places most recently in Hawaii and Alaska. Kendall’s knack for storytelling and historic passions turned each moment into a discovery. Lord of a small plot of land in Scotland, a small portion of land that he received as a symbol of love and thoughtfulness led to a desire to one day travel to Scotland as a family to visit.

A proud member of the Masonic Keystone Lodge #102 in Coffeyville, Kendall also held allegiance to the Bester G. Brown Lodge #433 in Wichita, embodying the values of brotherhood and community service. As a member of the Scottish Rite, OES, and Shrine, he forged bonds that spanned the globe, nurturing friendships that felt akin to family.

Kendall loved being a part of the Kiwanis, they welcomed him to Coffeyville, making him feel part of the community.  He poured his heart into the Coffeyville Historical Society, where his dedication shone brightly as he contributed countless hours to the Brown Mansion, infusing holiday celebrations with joy and festivity, showcasing his unwavering desire to uplift his community.

His legacy is one of quiet strength, organization, and a relentless commitment to serving his family, often unnoticed but deeply felt. Kendall S. Garton’s life may have been tragically short, but the impact he made will resonate infinitely within the hearts of those he touched, reminding us all of the beauty of love, friendship, and the profound connections that enrich our lives.

With a heart full of memories and eyes brimming with tears, we announce the passing of our beloved George Boyle, who departed this world on January 24, 2025. Born in Independence, KS, on April 18, 1948,

George was a beacon of light and warmth to all who knew him. His charismatic spirit and unmatched sense of humor were his trademarks, leaving indelible impressions on the hearts of those fortunate enough to cross his path. To quote Mark Twain, "The secret of getting ahead is getting started," which perfectly encapsulated George's ambitious nature. George was a man of many talents and interests, but his true passion lay in his work as a concrete layer. His commitment to his craft was unwavering, and he found great satisfaction in the tangible results of his hard work. George's reliable nature was evident in his professional life as a contractor, where he spent decades perfecting his skills before his well-deserved retirement in 2012.

But his industrious spirit didn't stop there. George had a soft spot for all creatures big and small, often extending his care and compassion to animals in need. His hobbies of fishing, hunting, collecting stamps, and coins brought him immense joy, as did his unique talent for metal flake and lace painting muscle cars. George was a dedicated family man, whose love for his family knew no bounds. He was lucky enough to find his soulmate in Diana, to whom he was faithfully married since September 15, 1968. Together, they built a beautiful life in Coffeyville, Kansas, filled with love and laughter. His loved ones will forever remember George as a man who was full of life and who cherished every moment spent with them. As William Shakespeare once wrote, "We know what we are, but know not what we may be," and George was the epitome of a man who continuously sought to better himself, his family, and his community.

George is survived by his loving wife Diana Boyle his two daughters Tammy Blagg and Amanda (Lewis Landsaw) Granddaughters Tabitha (Colby Starnes), Veronica Boyle, Brittany and Jasmine Roach. Donna Lucille Engel,

Donna Lucille Engel, a loving soul and true beacon of humility, loyalty, and dedication, was born on March 22, 1939, in Winfield, KS to George and Lucille Brewer. Her radiant spirit touched many lives in her 85 years, leaving an indelible imprint on those fortunate enough to know her. Our beloved Donna, a devoted matriarch, consummate educator, and avid lover of all things beautiful, departed from our sights but not our hearts on January 22, 2025.

Donna’s life was a rich tapestry of accomplishments and joys, both big and small. After spending her youth in Winfield and Coffeyville, she graduated from Field Kindley High School. After graduation she met and married Wayne Eugene Engel. He was drafted into the United States Army and that took the couple to San Francisco where they welcomed their son Tom. After Wayne's honorable discharge they returned home to Kansas after a brief while in Oklahoma. The family welcomed an addition with Christina and they found their family complete. Her career in education was marked by over 25 years of service as a speech para-professional at Tri-County from which she retired. A woman of many passions, Donna found joy in her Scotties, cheering on KU Basketball, losing herself in a good book, and crafting beautiful creations through sewing. She was a gifted baker, a collector of purses and jewelry, and a wellspring of historical knowledge. Yet, her true delight was found in her family, whom she adored, and her grandchildren, who were the light of her life. She fervently championed education, regularly taking her children to museums and art shows, knowing the importance of culture.

A devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, she also became an integral part of her husband’s business, Ashcraft Tire Company, initially as a part-time bookkeeper—a role that grew into years of dedication. In addition to those duties, she was active in all of the girls’ activities and served as Secretary of Dearing PTA, Brownie leader and assisted with Girl Scouts before coming back to her first love of 4-H leader. For over 62 years, she and Melvin have attended Dearing Christian Church. For over 40 years her ministry included teaching Sunday School, coordinating meals for grieving families, and offering countless acts of service. Laverda was also a member of the FCE Lucky 13, Caney Valley Antique Power Association.

Among her favorite pastimes were cooking, crafting, and offering heartfelt hugs. Laverda was a talented seamstress, known for making clothes and wedding dresses for her daughters. She also showcased her baking talents through intricate wedding, anniversary, and birthday cakes. Her enthusiasm extended to attending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s school and sporting events, where she provided unwavering support and encouragement.

1 Corinthians 13:13 says, “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love”. Laverda showed love to everyone she met in life, it was important to her to encourage others in fellowship, community and was intentional in cultivating friendships. She was always a light sharing Christ with all she met even if they didn’t know she was planting seeds. She truly had a servant’s heart offering love as it is the greatest commandment from God.

Laverda leaves behind a legacy of love and faith. She is survived by her husband Melvin; daughters Kelly Folk and Kathy (David) Hershey, grandchildren David (Brooke) Stapleton, Justin (Nicola) Lay, Jacob (Jennifer) Stapleton, Heath (Stacy) Stapleton, Tim (Jefferie) Lay, Michelle (Zach) Baker, Elijah (Glynna) Hershey, Zach (Alyssa) Hershey, Quinton (Bailey) Hershey, Bradly (Caitlin) Hershey and twenty-four great grandchildren with two more on the way, brother-in-law Richard Folk, sister-in-law Judy Folk and sister-in-law Shirley (Harry) Swalley, numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Mildred Lucille Kimrey

Mildred Lucille Kimrey of Lenapah, Oklahoma passed away with her daughters by her side at the age of 85 on December 30, 2024 at the Osage Nursing Home in Nowata, Oklahoma.

Mildred was born on November 16, 1939 in Welch, Oklahoma to Clayton and Elizabeth Lenora (Dunn) Haskit, and was one of twelve of the Haskit children. She attended Welch School she completed her education graduating in 1958. She was active in Basketball, Softball, Glee Club and Newpaper Staff.

On November 29, 1957, Mildred married her soulmate, Harold Kimrey, and they created a beautiful life together in Lenapah, celebrating 60 wonderful years until Harold's passing in 2017. Together, they raised three beloved children, Patricia and Debra, while also cherishing the memory of their son Dwight, who passed away at a young age. With Harold’s encouragement, Mildred developed a deep love for travel, exploring destinations such as Sweden and Germany, along with many delightful bus trips with the Condon Bank Heritage Club. Her grandchildren will always treasure memories of exciting trips to places like St. Louis, where they visited the Arch, enjoyed the wonders of Anheuser-Busch Gardens, and another trip where they attended a thrilling hot air balloon festival.

Mildred worked as a cook for the Lenapah School district for a number of years. She was a favorite of the school kids because seconds were always available. She continued her culinary journey at the Ideal Café in Nowata sharing delicious food with the community. She was also an accomplished upholsterer, seamstress and enjoyed embordering, and was an enthusiastic softball player in her youth. A proud member of the Nowata County Extension Club for over 60 years, she devoted countless hours volunteering at the Nowata County Free Fair, where she and her fellow members baked pies that became a fair highlight.

Family was everything to Mildred, and she took great joy in organizing family reunions, ensuring that her loved ones enjoyed delicious meals she lovingly prepared. 4th of July always included a gathering, and Mildred always had a lighter for the fireworks (cigarette) readily available for the grandkids. The grandkids enjoyed placing “Poppers” in the most unexpected places to surprise Grandma with a bang!!! They shared many laughs at her expense of surprise. To this day they can remember the many times they saw her in the morning hours enjoying a cup of coffee in the kitchen at the bar, smoking a cigarette while stretching the phone cord to its limits chatting on the phone.
