The Fredonia Yellowjackets traveled to Cherryvale where the Chargers hosted their homecoming game for another edition of our High School Football Game Of The Week. Both teams like to run the ball and from the opening snap it was a battle on the ground. Both teams battling it out in the trenches with Fredonia throwing just the ball one time in the first half and Cherryvale only throwing a few times throughout the night and on a few of those instances the Fredonia defense came up big with interceptions. It wasnt until late in the first half that finally Fredonia was able to squeeze into the endzone on the ground and from there the defense continued their success. Forcing 4 turnovers through the night and shutting out Cherryvale spoiling the homecoming game for the Chargers.

Yellowjackets win on the road 7 - 0 against the Chargers making Cherryvale 2 and 3 on the year. Chargers have a tough road game next week against the Douglass Bulldogs. Yellowjackets head back home and host the Belle Plaine Dragons as they move to 4 - 1 after this win and look to continue to hang around near the top of a very difficult Tri Valley Division. 

Two teams looking to get over .500 as wee head into week five of the high school football season in Kansas. 2-2 Field Kindley will head to 2-2 Mulvane tomorrow to take on the Wildcats. The Golden Tornado are coming off a big win on Homecoming Night against rival Independence 62-13. Head Coach Darrin Wegner says defensively Mulvane is similar to Independence they both like to blitz. Nado QB Jalen Logan handled the Bulldogs blitz as he rushed for over 200 yards including a 97 yard rushing touchdown.

Coach Wegner says Mulvane is a really good team and much better than their 2-2 record. He says he also feels like they are better than their 2-2 record. Pregame will be at 6:45 kickoff at 7:00pm on Star 98.9 KQQF.

The Vikings of Parsons look to continue their undefeated season this Friday at home but it doesn't come without a challenge. Though 3 out 4 of their remaining games are at home this week they host a very tough stretch of teams. This Friday they host the Raiders of Frontenac who currently sit at 2 and 2 on the year but coach Kurt Friess spoke with us on this team, as he says they are a big, fast and physical team who is going to give the Vikings all they can handle. Coach Friess also spoke on some concerns about the team improving focus when faced with adversity due to the difficult finish to their season and a somewhat effortless start to the season. Coach Friess says he is fortunate that the mojority of his tough schedule falls at home and has trust in the 15 seniors that lead this team. If they keep playing the way they have been the Vikings look to keep winning this Friday against Frontenac in Parsons kickoff at 7 PM.

Ravens went on the road to Highland Community College this past Saturday to play the Scotties. From the opening kick it seemed Highland had complete control of the game as the Scotties offense was the only of the two to create any production offensively. Wasn’t until the third quarter that the Ravens got their spark and it came from the special teams unit. Creating havoc against the punt crew of Highland and eventually blocking multiple punts and a couple of them being recovered in the end zone. Again the defense saves the day as the take the leads going into the 4th quarter were the Highland Scotties tied things up and won in overtime 41 to 38. The Red Ravens without Carson Proctor here in week 5, they started Reese Shaw as again he struggled to create any spark in the offense. Coffeyville even trying out the Red shirt from B.Y.U. Kody Wilstead as he finished on the day 4 of 6 for 33 yards and 2 INT’s. Red Ravens as a team throw 6 interceptions against Highland and now have a Bye week upcoming this next Saturday before they prepare for Dodge City on the first Saturday in October.

A big victory for Field Kindley on Homecoming night.  Congratulations to Emmett Starnes and Mercedes Colbert for being crowned the 2018 King and Queen.  Coffeyville got out to a fast start scoring 28 points in the first quarter and 50 points in the first half. A great game form QB Jalen Logan who had over 150 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns. The Nado move to 2-2 on the year with the 62-13 win and Independence falls to 0-4. 

The Golden Tornado are on the road next Friday for a matchup against Mulvane. 

The Red Ravens are on the road for the second straight week as the head to Highland to take on the Scotties. Coming off a 22-0 loss in El Dorado agianst Butler Head Coach Aaron Flores says offensively they really struggled to find consistency. As they head into week five Flores says they have worked on limiting turnovers and mental mistakes that have cost them in previous games. With Carson Proctor battling an injury week one starter Reese Shaw will get the start against the Scotties. QB Coach Evan Lassiter says he has confidence in any of the quarterbacks they have on their roster. Coach Lassiter also says he wants the team to be able to start and finish strong. Coach Flores says even in the loss the players never lose the sense of team pride.

The Fredonia Yellow Jackets play host to the Eureka Tornadoes tonight, as Fredonia looks to tack on win number 3. Last week they ushered in a win against Bluestem 28 to 14 though we sat down with coach Marc Svaty, as he says through this point on the year and heading into the weekend they need to keep the turnover numbers down. The offense and defense seem to be heading in the right direction though he notes the turnovers could really hurt them. Eureka comes into this games at 1 and 2 but both losses were to two very good ball clubs. Losing last week against a very good Humboldt team who also got the best of Fredonia in week 2. Coach Svaty says this Eureka team has been faced with tough opponents through the first few weeks and are preparing for a battle. Eureka is a big fast team and are also out to prove their point this year, having to play every game on the road. After two weeks of big wins, including last week against a evenly matched Field Kindley team, the Grizzlies from Labette County return home for their third home game in a row. Labette County welcomes in the Winfield Vikings who picked up their first win last week which moves them to one and two. Regardless of the record on paper, Labette County head coach Sean Price says on the field this team is very strong and physical and his team needs to prepare for a tough battle in the trenches. Price expects the run game to continue its success is he says they will most likely have a run first approach tonight but look to be flexible on plays, both defensively and offensively as last week Price said his he got burned a couple times, and he won't be making those mistakes again. The West Elk Patriots have another home tonight, as they host the Raiders from Central. Patriots look to bounce back after winning win in week one, but losing the previous two weeks last week to St. Paul High School 54 to 24. We sat down with head coach Chris Haag as he says regardless of the record he is happy with the progression of the team thus far on the season and knows they have a tough test tonight with a very strong and physical Central team. The Patriots this year have really been able to run the football well with their leading rusher Nic Moreno, though coach Haag says a more balanced attack may be on store for this Raiders team. Homecoming Week for the Golden Tornado, and not only is it Homecoming tomorrow but it's also a game against rival Independence. The Bulldogs come to town looking for their first win of the season and Field Kindley looks to get back to .500. Head Coach Darrin Wegner says Homecoming Week can come with its distractions. Coach Wegner says that Coach Boldra and the Bulldogs defense likes to blitz and if Jalen Logan can get away from the pressure he can make somethings happen with his feet. He says he wants to get back to a balanced offense which Labette County forced them to get away from in the loss last week.

After a loss to rival Caney Valley in their first game of the season the Cherryvale Chargers won the next two and are now 2-1 as they head into week four. A lot of changes occurred over the off season for the Chargers as most of their starters graduated. With just two returning starters Head Coach Harry Hester says the team continues to get better.

Cherryvale has a road trip in front of them as they head to Belle Plaine to take on the 1-2 Dragons.

The Neodesha Bluestreaks look for their first win on the season this Friday as they travel to Douglass High School. Bluestreaks still battling with a few injuries including their senior line backing unit, though talking with coach Black he says they’ve worked hard to prepare the younger guys and is happy with the way they have stepped up. The Bluestreaks again 0 and 3 on the season having to take down a 2 and 1 Bulldogs team out of Douglass who are coming off a recent home win against Marion High School. Speaking with coach John Black on his next opponent he says if his offense and defense can work together and keep Douglass off the field they have a pretty good shot of taking their first win . Though he says if they are able to run the edges well like Caney did last week, he says missing their senior linebackers will become very obvious.

Labette County heads in to week 4 of the Kansas High School football season at 2-1. They are coming off a victory at home against Field Kindley 28-14. Head Coach Sean Price says he liked the way his line played on both sides. He says they were able to contain the speedy Jalen Logan and limit the big plays by the Golden Tornado. Coach Price was impressed with the performance of his WR Anthony Lee who had 4 catches for 150 yards and 2 touchdowns.

He says they now prepare for Winfield who has a little history with. Winfield comes into week 4 at 1-2 with losses to Arkansas City(7-3) and McPherson(47-7) and a win last week against Circle Towanda(21-0)

Heading into week four for high school football in the state of Kansas the Parsons Vikings are 3-0. With wins over Iola(49-14), Anderson County(39-14) and Osawatomie(59-20). Head Coach Kurt Friess says he couldn't have asked for a better start to the season. After this Friday, where they travel to Baxter Springs, they will have played three of their first four games on the road. The Vikings are lead by their QB Gage Friess who has 455 yards passing with 10 touchdowns and 0 interceptions.

Coach Friess says this Baxtor Springs is better than their 1-2 record shows and will be one of their harder tests this season.

It’s a battle of the unbeaten this Friday on another edition of our High School Football Game of the week on greatest hits 104.1FM KGGF. The Devils of Sedan travel to Oswego to face off against the Indians. Both Teams come into week 4 on a high note as the host Oswego won big in week three 48 - 16 and Sedan beating Marmaton Valley 66 - 30. We sat down with Sedan Head Coach Mick Holt as he says he has taken a bit of extra time to review film against this tough Oswego team. He says it comes down to his O line and their ability to hold a much bigger team, though he has stated he is very impressed with the freshman presence and their ability on the offensive line so far this year. Holt again spoke upon the comparison between the two teams as he says there truly isn’t many differences though Sedan may have more speed compared to strength from Oswego. In a game that was closer than the final score indicated the Butler Grizzlies beat the Coffeyville Red Ravens 22-0. The defense continues to be the strongest part of this Red Ravens team as they held Butler to 7 points until about half way through the 4th quarter. The offense outside of a handful of big plays struggled to find any sort of identity only rushing for 56 yards on 34 carries. Questions continue at the QB position as Reece Shaw replaced Carson Proctor midway through the 2nd quarter. 

Coffeyville falls to 2-2 and will travel to Highland next Saturday for a 1:00pm kick off against the Scotties. 

Caney Valley Bullpups traveled to Neodesha last night for a special simulcasted edition of our High School Football Game of The Week. From the beginning the Bullpups continued their success as bring in their third win on the year winning big on the road 42 to 7. Trey Richie and the rest of the Bullpup offense played a tough run offense sticking with the wishbone formation for the majority of the game. Though to our surprise the Bullpups began to air the ball out a little and show off Richie’s arm.  We knew from the beginning that Neodesha would have an uphill climb with the amount of injuries to their team but the BlueStreaks still competed. Being shut out until the last few drives of the game but putting up an impressive scoring drive will give them confidence into next week. Caney Valley Bullpups travel to Frontenac next Friday while the Blue Streaks are also on the road at Douglas High School.

Easton Dean and the Labette County Grizzlies come out on top against Field Kindley in the week three matchup in Altamont. Two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown by Dean lead the Grizzlies to the 28-14 victory. The Golden Tornado dug themselves into some holes offensively in the first half with false start penalties that put them in multiple third and longs. It was a good night defensively for Senior CJ Kelly and offensively for Senior WR Trey Myrie who had both the Nado touchdowns.

LCHS moves to 2-1 on the season and is set to play Winfield at home for week four, and FKHS falls to 1-2 and will play rival Independence. It is homecoming week for the Golden Tornado.

The Coffeyville Red Ravens have cracked the national rankings for the first time this season. After a strong defensive performance with four defensive touchdowns, four forced fumbles, five interceptions and eight sacks, Coffeyville is #17 in this week's poll. The Red Ravens beat #17 Iowa Central last weekend to move to 2-1 overall on the season. With the loss, Iowa Central fell out of the top-20.

Red Ravens start a long road stretch this weekend as they will travel to El Dorado to play the Grizzlies of Butler Community College. Red Ravens coming off a good win against Iowa Central who has a week one victory over the Grizzlies. Butler though, is also coming off a big week 2 win as they beat the number 18 team in the country Highland C.C 35-27. All bets are off this game as both teams historically have gone back and forth and have several similarities on the field. Coach Aaron Flores says this team is big, and will try to run over them. Using their speed to wear down the defense is what they've seen in film as we also spoke with defensive back Alvinoski Lafleur, who received a national defensive player award last week, as he says they have prepared for a tough run game. Though the defense is coming off a 6 INT game but know they have a tough test. Coach Flores says if his team can get up early and hold the lead all while continuing to improve finishing the football game as he says that's been an area of focus these last few weeks. Five out of eight teams in the KJCCC made the national rankings including CCC's opponent this Saturday Butler coming in at #20. Other teams ranked include Garden City (#7), Hutchinson (#12), and Independence (#13). Highland got votes, but did not make the top-20.

The Neodesha Bluestreaks find themselves featured on our High School Football Game of The Week once again as they host the Caney Valley Bullpups tonight simulcasted on 690 AM and 104.1 FM KGGF. We sat down with Neodesha head coach John Black as he spoke upon the difficulties of having a short week as the Bluestreaks fell short in there make up game on Monday against Erie High School. Only having 4 days to turn around and prepare your guys is always difficult, but then having to do it with the injuries that the Blue Streaks were struck with Monday night makes it even harder. John Black says their SR. Quarterback Blaze Grimes will still be out for the game of the week as the team will kind of take it easy and just focus on not making mistakes and getting to next week as they have a very tough test with Caney Valley . The Bullpups come into the game with 2 big wins under their belt and have been a force defensively and coach Black would rather not create further injuries against a very tough team in Caney Valley. Week Three for high school football in the SEK. The Field Kindley Gold Tornado get set to travel to Altamont to take on the Labette County Grizzlies. Both teams come into week three at 1-1. Head Coach Darren Wegner says for the defense it's all about containing the Grizzlies QB. Easton Dean is a senior QB committed to Iowa State. Coach Wegner says he can throw he can pass and has great vision when he gets out of the pocket. For the Nado offense it's all about making sure they are able to play their game and use their speed to their advantage.

The Lady Pups of Caney Valley High School take part in a rookie tournament in Pittsburg. Jillian Summers placed 3rd, Maeli Simpson placed 6th and Taylor Browning placed 10th. Taylor also won the long drive contest. Peyton Watts finished 11th and Kimmy Salazar finished 15th. There were 37 golfers participating.

The tournament was the first for the girls.

After a postponed game on Friday the Parsons Vikings traveled up to Garnett, Kansas on Monday to take on Anderson County High School. Lead by their Senior QB Gage Friess, who was 14 of 21 with 180 yards passing and two touchdowns and led the team in rushing, the Vikings get the win 39-14. They now prepare to take on an Osawatomie team still looking for their first win.

Coach Kurt Friess says they were fully focused on Anderson County before looking forward to Osawatomie. He says with the senior leadership on this team he doesn't expect the two games in one week to be an issue.

The Grizzles of Labette County High School to Host Coffeyville this Friday squaring off against the Golden Tornado. Coach Sean Price and his team are coming off a big week 2 win against Independence High School 36 - 0. Now having to shift their focus to another school from Montgomery County with Field Kindley, he says their game plan doesn't change as he his guys playing a balanced offense by, running the football controlling the clock and throwing it down field when passing lanes open. Defensivelly the Grizzles have quite the test against a tough run game with Jaylen Logan on the other side of the line, though Coach Price says if his guys fill the gaps and stay focused on where the ball is, the Grizzles have a good chance of stealing one from F.K.H.S. on the road. We will carry that game for you on Star 98.9 KQQF this Friday with kick off at 7 PM out at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

After a big week 1 victory on the road against Marmaton Valley, West Elk high school continued their 2018 season on the road as they travel to Udall to play the Eagles of Udall High School. Though this time the Patriots fall on the other side of the numbers as they lose big on the road 52 - 6 against the Eagles. Head Coach Chris Haag says the team made subtle mistakes that turned int big plays for Udall as he states they were a big and fast team that just wore the guys down and. Coach Haag said the team took the loss seriosuly, and look to improve into week three as they will finally play on their home field. They take on the 1 and 1 St. Paul High School Indians who come off a week 2 victory against the Life Prep Fire 34 to 22. Chris Haag spoke on the Indians as he says he sees a number of similararites in the two teams and thinks this game will come down to the wire. Stating if the offensive line holds he thinks his the Patriots have a good chance of bringing in their 2nd win on the season, a great way to start a 3 game home stretch. Kick off is this Friday at 7 pm at West Elk High School in Howard Kansas.

A make up game from Friday night was moved to this evening in Neodesha. KGGFs presentation of the High school Game of the week saw the Erie High School Red Devils travel to Neodesha High to battle the Blue Streaks. From the beggining the home crew of Neodesha was struck with injuires as their starting Quarterback Blaze Grimes went down on the first drive of the game. Setting back head coach John Black with their original game plan they put in Randall McKinnis as well as Mayson Ellis in at Quarterback with Ellis seeing most of the touches. With the set back the Blue Streaks still got on the board first with a 25 yard TD pass from Ellis to John Wallace which put the Streaks up by 6, which they could not convert the point after. After a scoreless 1st quarter the Streaks took the lead early 2nd which was quickly flipped by a good drive by the Red Devils who go the length of the feild and finish their drive with a passing TD and the point after to give them a 7 -6 lead. Inching closer to half, the Red Devils took back the possesion, burned 5 minutes off the clock and scored once more going into halftime leading 14 to 6. After halftime both teams struggled to gain traction in the 3rd quarter as both teams go scoreless through the quarter. Both defenses not giving an inch till about 4 minutes remaining when Neodesha took their shot down field, as Erie defensive back Tyler Wimp takes it 50 plus yards to the house with an interception giving the Red Devils a 20 - 6 lead. A missed field goald kept the score as it finished as the Red Devils take home their first win of the season 20 - 6. Neodesha's Blaze Grimes seemingly out for a couple weeks as well as back up quarterback went down with concussion like symptoms after the game was over. Blue Streaks host Caney on Friday on 104.1 KGGF and the Red Devils travel to Cherryvale for week 3.

Red Ravens return home for a week 3 matchup against Iowa Central tonight over on your home for Red Raven Football 98.1 KUSN. During our weekly sit down with coach Flores he says the game plan last week against against Fort Scott exposed some easy run lanes as they get the win, but are looking for a more balanced attack tonight against Iowa Central. He has said that QB Carson Proctor has a bit better pocket presence than Shaw but says they still will look to use both. Red Ravens play at 1 PM this afternoon against what Flores says is a completely different Iowa Central Team then what we are used to seeing. More seasoned and stronger players, as Flores says their a team that likes to take their shot down field.  Both Ravens and Central put up a great Fight against the #2 team in the country in Iowa Western and also both have a win behind them. Several days of rain forced the postponement of several high school football games Firday night.  But a number of teams did get their games in, Coffeyville’s Field Kindley picked up their first win of the season improving to 1 – 1 on the season.  Coffeyville defeated Columbus by a final of 46 – 27.  Caney Valley improved to 2 – 0 on the season with a with a whipping of Eureka 41 – 6.  Elsewhere around southeast Kansas Pittsburg blanked Chanute 52 to 0, Paola defeated Ft Scott 42 to 0.  It was Labette County over Independence 36 to 0 and Oswego defeated Marmaton Valley 30 – 22.

 A number of area games were postponed last night because of rain soaked fields.  Erie at Neodesha, Fredonia at Humboldt and Parsons versus Anderson County will all be played at a later date.
