Free Throw Struggles Hurt Ravens in Loss to Butler

Coffeyville, Kan. - The Coffeyville Community College Red Raven men's basketball team came up just short on the road against rival Butler, dropping the game 110-104 on Wednesday night in El Dorado.

CCC was much improved from the first matchup with the Grizzlies, showing much more comfort against the press defense and keeping up on the offensive end. The Ravens took a 58-56 lead to the locker room after a high-scoring first half, with Coffeyville shooting 63% from the field.

Missed free throws began to haunt the Ravens deeper into the second half, with the team finishing just 20-37 at the charity stripe in the loss. Key buckets from Tristan Hankins and Josiah Kirkwood allowed Butler to prevail for their 13th win of the season, and complete the regular-season sweep of CCC.

For the Ravens, Jack Sorrell finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Jeremiah Ibeziako had a double-double, with 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Daniel Ntambwe finished with 16 points on 8-9 shooting.

The Ravens would briefly re-take the lead in the third quarter, but the Grizzlies mad key plays down the stretch to ensure their 18th win of the season, and stay atop the conference standings.

KU Coach Receives Medical Care

Kansas coach Bill Self did not accompany the Jayhawks to Boulder for their game tonight at Colorado after being taken to a hospital in Lawrence yesterday.

Kansas' athletic department said in a statement that Self was feeling under the weather and went to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. The school says Self felt better after receiving IV fluids.

It was not immediately clear if Self would attempt to travel for the game or if an assistant would run the bench for the 19th-ranked Jayhawks.

Self, 63, missed the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments in 2023 because of a heart condition, getting a standard catheterization and having two stents inserted to help treat blocked arteries. He had two more stents inserted in July.

Now in his 23rd season, Self led Kansas to national titles in 2008 and 2022 and is the program's career wins leader with a 609-156 record. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017, the former Oklahoma State player also coached at Oral Roberts, Tulsa and Illinois.

The Lady Nado got off to a good start leading 9-8 after the first quarter, but a 13-0 Fort Scott run would see them gain control of the game in the second. Coffeyville would answer with a small run to cut the halftime lead to 26-20. In the second half, the Pirates were tied at 77 around the six minute mark, followed by eight unanswered points from Dodge City.

Eventually down by eight, the Pirates turned up the defensive pressure and that led to a few steals and seven straight points to cut the deficit to one. The Conquistadors were 3 for 4 from the free-throw line down the stretch, leaving the door slightly open for the Pirates, who had a chance to tie or win the game with 10 seconds remaining. Indy would put it in the hand of Knox who had led the comeback effort, he would work his way into the paint, was cut-off, and kicked it out to Kourouma at the top of the key, his last-second look rimming out as the final buzzer sounded.

The Pirates, now 7-4 in KJCCC play after back-to-back losses, will look to get back on the winning side of things this weekend as they travel to take on a red-hot Cloud County team in Concordia.

The South Coffeyville boys and girls teams fall to Copan

The Copan Lady Hornets thrilled the home crowd Tuesday night, defeating the South Coffeyville Lady Lions 40-39 on a dramatic buzzer-beater that sealed the win as time expired.

Neither team was able to gain much separation during the contest, as both defenses limited clean looks and forced tough shots. South Coffeyville matched Copan basket for basket, answering every Hornets surge with timely scoring of its own. As the final minute ticked away, the Hornets were down 39-38, tension filled the Copan gym with fans on their feet anticipating a dramatic ending.

That moment came at the buzzer, when Copan’s final shot dropped through the net just as time expired, securing the one-point victory on its home floor. The thrilling finish capped off a memorable night for the Lady Hornets and provided a momentum-boosting win moving forward, while South Coffeyville narrowly missed pulling off a road victory.

The boys fell 64–37 in a rematch between the two rivals. Copan jumped out to an early lead and maintained control throughout the contest, using a strong offensive performance and steady defensive pressure to keep the Lions from finding any rhythm.

It was the second meeting of the season between the two teams, with Copan also coming out on top in their first matchup earlier this year by a score of 59–42. Much like the earlier contest, the Hornets were able to dictate the pace of play, limiting South Coffeyville’s scoring opportunities while capitalizing on transition points and second-chance looks.
