Rice Suffers Major Injury in Chiefs Win

The Kansas City Chiefs are off to a 4-0 start to the 2024 season, but have potentially lost another star player long term.

Wide receiver Rashee Rice is believed to have suffered a torn ACL in his right knee, after colliding with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Rice will have an MRI to confirm the damage today.

Rice is the latest playmaker to suffer a major injury, after free agent signing Hollywood Brown suffered a sternoclavicular injury that will keep him out the entire season, and running back Isiah Pacheco broke his leg in Week 2, and is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

Rice entered the game leading the NFL in catches and second in the league in receiving yards. The second round pick in 2023 emerged as an immediate star, catching 79 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns in his rookie season.

The Royals are just the second team in MLB history to qualify for the postseason the season after losing 100 games. Manager Matt Quatraro says the team has grown so much over the season.

Baltimore is trying to snap an eight game losing streak in the postseason, including being swept last season after winning 101 games. Star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr says it's important to approach the playoffs the exact same way.

Game 1 begins tomorrow afternoon, with Cole Ragans dueling Corbin Burnes. Coverage starts at 2:30 p.m. CT, with first pitch at 3:08, on the Mighty 690, KGGF.

The Royals have been led by a young superstar in Bobby Witt Jr, experienced veterans in Salvador Perez and Seth Lugo, and emerging stars in Cole Ragans, Brady Singer, and Vinnie Pasquantino.

Kansas City will either olay the Houston Astros or the Baltimore Orioles in the Wild Card round, depending on what happens in the final two regular season games.

The postseason begins on Tuesday.

Nado Shutout Bulldogs in Cross County Matchup

Field Kindley improves to .500 with a big win over rival Independence 42-0.

The defense would get things started for the Nado as Aaron Tunstall would intercept Bulldogs QB Jace Dye on Indy's first drive and return it for a touchdown. Tunstall would strike again picking off Dye on Indy's second drive, returning his second interception for a touchdown. The Nado jumped out to a 16-0 lead without their offense touching the field. Coffeyville would strike again defensively this time it was Josh Shobe with the interception return for a touchdown. Shobe would add another touchdown on the offensive side of the ball with a 32-yard touchdown run giving the Nado a 30-0 lead at the half.

Coffeyville would control the clock in the second half as Tunstall would get thing going running the football, finishing with 14 carries for 125 yards. The Nado would add two more touchdowns in the second half. The first by Trenton Akins who capped off a 52-yard run with a two yard touchdown. Axel Erne would get involved in the scoring finding De'Ontay Gallindo for a 17-yard touchdown his first of the season.

The Nado are now 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in SEK League play. They comeback home for a homecoming matchup with Christ Prep Academy on Friday.

Ravens Battle Defending Champs on Road

Following an unplanned bye week, the Red Ravens are back on the road to battle the defending national champion Iowa Western Reivers.

Iowa Western enters the game the No. 2 ranked team in the nation, with their lone loss being a one-point defeat to Hutchinson in Week 2. Coffeyville is receiving votes for the National Top 15.

The Reivers feature one of the best offenses in the country, averaging 40 points per game. Head coach Nick Dobler says the Reiver air raid is a style they haven't seen yet this season.

Coffeyville nearly took down Iowa Western in 2023, holding a lead into the fourth quarter and eventually falling by a field goal. Dobler says it will take a complete team effort to dethrone them this time around.

Coverage of Iowa Western-Coffeyville begins tomorrow at 12:40 p.m. with kickoff at 1 on the home for Red Raven sports, US 98.

The Bullpups' offensive line was key in last week's 42-14 victory over Neodesha, and Caney Head Coach Criss Davis says they'll be a huge factor in this week's game as well.

Davis says his team is ready to see where they stand among tough teams in the state.

Saturday's game from Overland Park will be broadcast on Sonshine 98.9. Pregame starts around 2:40, with kickoff scheduled for 3:00.

Nado Look to Make it Two in a Row

Despite unusual circumstances in their week three matchup with Emporia, Coffeyville picked up their first win of the season.  Head Coach Deonta Wade says getting a player like Trenton Akins back from injury was a big part of their week three success.

Now the Nado head back on the road to take on rival Independence. Coach Wade says the players on both teams know each other very well.

The Bulldogs are looking for their first win of the season and the Nado are looking to get to .500 on the season and in league play. Pregame is at 6:30pm with kick-off at 7:00pm on Sonshine 98.9 KQQF.

Galena enters the matchup 1-2 on the season, with losses to Frontenac and Columbus, and a win over Afton. Fredonia is 2-1 with wins over Southeast and Bluestem, and a defeat to Eureka.

Svaty says the Bulldogs record can be misleading.

Red Raven Baseball Hosts Walk for Mental Health Awareness

Dozens participated as the Red Raven baseball team hosted a walk for mental health awareness.

The entire CCC baseball roster, as well as community members, met at Walter Johnson Park yesterday to embark on a 2.3 mile walk, to honor former Red Raven Conner Taylor. Taylor wore the #23 while a baseball player at CCC, before tragically taking his own life in 2016.

In addition to the walk honoring Conner, September is also National Suicide Prevention Month, in which the Red Ravens wanted to spread awareness for mental illness.

CCC baseball has hosted numerous events to remember the life of Taylor, including having an annual Conner Taylor Day game during the regular season.

Nado Win First Game Despite Lightning Delay

It took an extra three days due to a lightning delay postponing the second half, but the Nado picked up their first win of the season 47-28.

It was scoreless first quarter, but Emporia would strike first on the first play of the second quarter. QB Micah Gray would find WR Owen Ruge for a 48-yard touchdown. The Spartans would extend their lead in the second with a Gray pass to TE Madden Seidl for a 34-yard score. The Nado would put themselves on the scoreboard with two jump ball touchdowns from QB Axel Erne to WR Ke'Shawn Hayes cutting the lead to 14-12 at the half. During halftime, a storm moved into the area causing the second half to be postponed until Monday.

After three days of rest and preparation Coffeyville and Emporia would kick off the second half with the Nado receiving the ball trailing by two, Coffeyville would eat up eight minutes of the clock in the third quarter but a fumble in the redzone would leave them trailing by two. On Emporia's first drive of the second half, Hayes would pick off Gray and return it for a touchdown and Coffeyville's first lead 18-14.

The Nado never looked back as Aaron Tunstall would get things going rushing for over 175 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The duo of Hayes and Tunstall was exactly what the Nado needed to pick up their first win as they combined for over 350 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns.

The Nado take on rival Independence on Friday.

Red Ravens Looking to Bounce Back

The Red Ravens received an unexpected bye week after the Butler game was postponed, and now aim to get back in the win column this week.

CCC travels on the road to battle the defending national champions in Iowa Western. Coffeyville lost a hard fought battle in overtime to Garden City in their conference opener, dropping to 2-1 on the season.

Defensive back Cyler Christmas says the team believes in each other to respond.

An impact player for the Raven defense has been freshman linebacker Lonnie Burt, who has played a majority of snaps this season. He says the defense has to trust each other, and do their jobs.

The Ravens fell to Iowa Western last season in early November, dropping the game 20-17 after giving the Reivers one of their toughest battles of the season.

Jayhawks Drop Third Straight Game

A disappointing first month of the season continues for the Kansas Jayhawks, dropping their third straight game.

KU fell short to West Virginia 32-28 in the conference opener, despite leading the game with less than four minutes left. The Jayhawks have fallen to Illinois and UNLV as well this month.

Head coach Lance Leipold says the team is frustrated, but hopeful.

Numerous conference championship contenders have already fallen thus far in the Big 12, with Kansas State, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech all suffering losses as well.

KU looks to get back on track this weekend, welcoming the TCU Horned Frogs to town.

Royals Look to Snap Late Season Struggles

Two playoff spots are up for grabs in the American League, and the Kansas City Royals are one of three teams within one game of each other.

Kansas City is in a virtual tie with the Detroit Tigers for the last two playoff spots. The Royals do hold the tiebreaker over Detroit. The Minnesota Twins are one game back of both KC and Detroit.

Kansas City has been limping to the finish line however, losing seven straight games, and making what appeared to be a near lock to make the postseason, a sprint to the finish. Manager Matt Quatraro says the team hasn't been able to get in a groove recently.

The boys in blue haven't qualified for the postseason since 2015. Quatraro says it's time for the team to dig deep.

The Royals are off today, and wrap up the regular season against the Nationals and Braves this week.

Caney Ground Game Dominates in Victory at Neodesha

The Caney Valley Bullpup run game was firing on all cylinders in a 42-14 victory last night over the Neodesha Blue Streaks.

Traxcyn Garton had two touchdown runs, and Raydn Martin added another in the win.

Caney's defense intercepted Neodesha on their first possession, and the Bullpups subsequently scored for the first score of the game, but the Blue Streaks responded immediately with a drive, culminated by a 65-yard touchdown from J'Vonte White to Cole Ramey. Neodesha led 7-6 after the first quarter. A 20-point second quarter for the Bullpups was the difference in the game, with Neodesha's next score not coming until late in the 4th quarter.

Special teams were the only problem for the Bullpups, as two turnovers came on attempted punt returns.

Neodesha (1-2) will take on Columbus next Friday night, while Caney (2-1) will travel to Lenexa, KS, a week from today for a Saturday match-up with Christ Prep Academy. Kickoff is set for 3:00 pm.

Ravens, Grizzlies Renew Historic Rivalry

A major rivalry in JUCO football is reignited, as the Red Ravens travel to El Dorado to battle the Butler Grizzlies.

Coffeyville is looking to rebound from an overtime loss to Garden City last week, while Butler aims to win their third consecutive game.

The Ravens learned some tough lessons last week, watching a halftime lead disappear as well as crucial mistakes costing them in the end. Head coach Nick Dobler says the players have to step up and respond.

CCC defeated Butler last season in a 15-7 defensive battle, with Enzo Tedesco running in the game winning touchdown with less than four minutes remaining. Dobler says the matchup with the Grizzlies is always a little different.

Coverage of Coffeyville-Butler begins at 6:30 p.m. CT tomorrow night, with kickoff at 7, on the home for Red Raven Sports, US 98.

Caney Looks For Blue Skies Against Blue Streaks

After a 48-6 victory against Erie last week, the Caney Valley Bullpups look for their second win of the season tonight at Neodesha.

Head Coach Criss Davis says while there are areas to clean up on all sides of the ball, he was happy with his team's performance.

Davis says the balance on offense helped keep the opposing defense on their toes, and he was glad to see the comfort level of the scheme better than in week one.

Davis says his defense should notice some similarities between last week and this week's opponent.

Tonight's game at Neodesha kicks off at 7:00, with pregame around 6:40, on Greatest Hits 104.1.

Nado Head to Emporia Looking for First Win

Field Kindley is back on the road, still looking for its first win of the season, as it travels to Emporia.

The Nado are coming off a 34-7 loss against league-rival Chanute. Head Coach Deonta Wade says that despite the 0-2 start, some guys have stepped up for the team.

The Spartans are a team Coach Wade hasn't faced in his previous four seasons as head coach. He says they are a 5A school with a roster almost twice the size of the Nado.

Emporia is also looking for their first win this season with a week 1 loss to Pittsburg, 56-13, and a loss last week to Wichita West, 40-12.

Chiefs Sign Hunt to One Year Deal

The Kansas City Chiefs will be attempting to replace Isiah Pacheco with a familiar face.

Former Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt has agreed to a one year deal to return to the team, and will report to the practice squad to start.

Hunt was selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft, and led the league in rushing in his rookie season. He was released the following year after a video of him kicking a woman went viral.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid says Hunt has matured and grown from that incident.

Hunt has spent the past five seasons playing for the Cleveland Browns. He will team up with Carson Steele and Samaje Perine to lead the KC backfield until Pacheco's return.

Sedan Looks to Make it Two in a Row on Homecoming Night

After improving to 1-1 on the season, Sedan returns home to take on Flinthills in their Week Three matchup.

Head Coach Mick Holt says they're a young team but a lot of those underclassmen have stepped up this season. The Blue Devils return home for Homecoming Night in Sedan. Coach Holt says it can bring both positives and negatives.

The Mustangs come into this matchup with a 1-1 record as well. They picked up a win week one 24-12 over Central Burden and fell last week to Dexter 53-6.

Bulldogs Look for First Win in Home Opener

Independence High School will host Fort Scott in their home opener in their Week Three matchup with the Tigers. The Bulldogs start the season 0-2 with losses to Columbus and Mulvane.

Head Coach Kendall Fiscus says they've started both games well, but they still have to put together a full four-quarter performance. Not only is it IHS's home opener, but it is also Homecoming Night. Coach Fiscus says it's a great night to get fans in the stands to support the team.

Fort Scoot is 2-0 heading into this Week Three matchup, with wins over Poala and Parsons. This is both teams' first league game of the season.

Patriots Host Udall on Homecoming Night

The West Elk Patriots are off to another strong start in 2024, and look to move to 3-0 with a matchup against the Udall Eagles.

The Patriots have defeated Argonia/Attica and Oxford to begin the season, showcasing a high powered offense and scoring a combined 108 points the first two weeks.

Head Coach Chris Haag says the team's upperclassmen were vital to escape with a win last Friday.

It is Homecoming week for the Patriots, and the district is celebrating all week long. Haag says the team needs to remain focused on their business on the field.

The Patriots will battle the Eagles in Howard on Friday night at 7 p.m.

Raven Volleyball Returns to Nellis Hall

The Lady Raven volleyball team returns to Nellis Hall to battle Fort Scott tonight.

Coffeyville sits at 5-11 on the season, and is looking for their first conference win of the campaign. The Ravens have had more success as of late, hovering around the .500 mark since the opening week of the season.

Head Coach Kandi Midgett says her team needs to continue to focus on the details of a match.

Nearly 75% of the roster is true freshmen trying to compete in a gauntlet conference that features the defending national champions, as well as other power programs like KCK and Johnson County. Midgett says she's proud of how her team has grown on and off the floor.

The Ravens-Greyhounds match begins tonight at 6 p.m. at Nellis East, and can be streamed on the Red Raven Sports Network.

Hutchinson, Highland in Top 10 of NJCAA Ranks

Nearly a full month into the college football season, the Jayhawk conference boasts the No. 1 team in the nation, and four total teams ranked.

Hutchinson remains the unanimous top team in the nation, after escaping Iowa Central in overtime, 33-30. The Blue Dragons have opened the season with three impressive wins over Central, Iowa Western, and New Mexico Military.

The Highland Scotties earn their highest rankings since joining the KJCCC in 1996, slotting at No. 8 in the nation. Highland had their second shutout of the season, beating Ellsworth 21-0 on Saturday. The Scottie defense has allowed only 13 points on the season, ranking first in the country in opponent points per game.

Garden City moves up to No. 11 after an overtime win over Coffeyville on the road. The Ravens' Week 4 opponent, the Butler Grizzlies, is the fourth and final KJCCC team in the rankings, moving up to No. 14.

Chiefs One of Nation's Most Expensive Tickets

The Kansas City Chiefs have been atop the NFL for more than five years now, but their admission prices are also near the top of the league.

Chiefs tickets are on average 197% more costly than the average sports ticket for the Big Four American sports, according to sports betting site GamingToday.com. Fans are also paying a premium in comparison to the rest of the NFL, with tickets 55% more than the average NFL price, at almost $400 on average.

Kansas City ranks the second-most expensive team in the league to watch, behind only the Dallas Cowboys. The Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, and Philadelphia Eagles round out the Top 5 most expensive.

Additional franchises of note include the Los Angeles Lakers at No. 6, San Francisco 49ers at No. 8, and Cincinnati Bengals at No. 9.

Raven Softball Ready to Take Field

Red Raven softball gets their exhibition season started today.

The team opens fall ball with a home doubleheader against Connors State College. Head Coach Ashton Friend says she's looking for her team to play loose.

Players on the team have verbalized the positive energy around the program, with the team both having fun and staying competitive. Friend says it's an important balance to find for any team.

Friend joined the Ravens late in the spring, and returns to the Jayhawk after two seasons playing at Cowley. She says the CCC culture made it an easy decision to come to Coffeyville.

Today's doubleheader begins at 2:00 this afternoon, and can be watched at Byers Field.

Pacheco Suffers Broken Leg

The Chiefs will be without one of their top offensive weapons for the extended future.

Running back Isiah Pacheco is being place on injured reserve, and will miss at least the next four games, after suffering a fractured fibula late in the win over the Bengals.

Pacheco underwent x-rays on Sunday night, and will have an MRI this afternoon to determine further ligament damage to the right ankle. Pacheco left Arrowhead Stadium on crutches and in a walking boot.

ESPNs Dan Orlovsky says the Chiefs still have the pieces in place to survive without Pacheco.

Pacheco has led the team in rushing each of the past two seasons, and had rushed for 135 yards thus far in 2024. Rookie Carson Steele, Samaje Perine, and former first-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire will be tasked with stepping up for the next 2-3 months.

Chiefs Beat Bengals at Buzzer

Another Chiefs-Bengals game came down to the wire, and again, Harrison Butker delivered in the clutch for Kansas City.

Butker drilled a 51-yard kick to edge Cincinnati 26-25 at GEHA Field at Arrowhead.

Patrick Mahomes had an uncharacteristic slow day, throwing for 151 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Kansas City was able to keep the final drive alive on a costly pass interference penalty on a 4th and 16 play that extended the drive.

It was not a perfect afternoon for Kansas City, as the offensive line struggled to block Trey Hendrickson, and running back Isaih Pacheco left in the final minute with an injury.

The Chiefs are 2-0, and will head on the road for the first time this season, to battle the Falcons in Atlanta.

Ravens Fall in OT to Garden City

Coffeyville left the field heartbroken, after an overtime defeat to the Garden City Broncbusters.

The Ravens jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the opening quarter, scoring on each of their first two drives. Redshirt freshman Carson Creehan got the start, completing 16 of 29 passes for 161 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

CCC struggled offensively in the second half, failing to score any points after 23 points in the first half. The Ravens had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but could not convert on a 44-yard field goal.

In overtime, Creehan exited the game due to injury, and Joseph Vick entered in his place. Vick's first pass was underthrown and intercepted, resulting in the game-winning touchdown for Garden City.

The Ravens suffer their first loss of 2024, and fall to 2-1 on the season. They will travel to El Dorado to battle Butler on Saturday night.

Bullpups Blast Red Devils in Home Opener

The Caney Valley Bullpups showed discipline on Military Appreciation Night, as a strong offensive and defensive effort helped propel them to a 48-6 victory over the Erie Red Devils.
The Pups scored on their first three possessions, leading 22-0 after the 1st quarter and 42-6 at halftime.
Ben Matthews led Caney with both a receiving and a rushing touchdown.
Caney improves to 1-1 on the season, while Erie falls to 0-2.

Caney will travel to Neodesha next Friday to take on the Bluestreaks.

Nado Drop Week 2 to Chanute

Field Kindley falls to 0-2 with a 34-7 loss to Chanute.

It was a combination of not being able to get things going offensively and not being able to stop the run defensively that plagued the Nado in their second game. The Nado stalled on their first drive of the game after picking up two first downs. Quinton Harding had a 40 yard punt return setting Chanute up with a first and ten on the Nado 37. It took the Blue Comets two plays a 26 yard run by Harding and an 11 yard run by Elliot Stephenson to strike first taking the 7-0.

Both teams would go quiet offensively until the final two minutes of the half as Chanute scored twice in 10 seconds thanks to a recovered kick-off. The Nado trailed 20-0 at the break. Coffeyville finally got on the board with a touchdown reception by Damaris Smith but two more Blue Comet touchdowns would put the game away.

The Blue Comets run for 214 yards and four touchdowns. Harding had 116 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns. The Nado head on the road to take on Emporia still looking for their first win.

Ravens Host Garden City in KJCCC Showdown

The Red Ravens return to the friendly confines for the first time in 2024, battling Garden City.

CCC is 2-0 on the early season, with wins over Kansas Wesleyan JV and Cisco.

Garden City presents the Ravens with their toughest test of the season, presenting a strong offensive line and dynamic quarterback in Tyler Nelson. Head coach Nick Dobler says the Ravens will need to be ready to stop the run.

CCC and Garden are each among the leaders in the conference in rushing yards per game, as well as run defense, so it will be a matchup of strengths. Dobler says the physicality the matchup brings is expected in the Jayhawk.

Coverage begins tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. CT, with kickoff at 7, on the home for Red Raven sports, US 98.

Caney / Game of the Week Preview: Erie vs Caney

As both teams come off a week one loss, the Erie Red devils travel to Caney to take on the Bullpups for Military Appreciation Night.

Both teams are looking to improve their turnover ratio as they head into tonight's game. They also are looking to take the lessons from last week, apply them to this week, and hope to change the outcome to a win.

Erie Head Coach David Pitts says it's all about forgetting the bad.

Caney Head Coach Criss Davis says there were plenty of positives in last weeks game.

Because of college football on the Mighty 690 KGGF and Greatest Hits 104.1, the Caney / Game of the Week will be heard on U-S 98 (98.1 FM); pregame begins around 6:40, with kickoff at 7:00.

Nado Host Chanute in Home Opener

Field Kindley looks to bounce back after a week-one loss as they return home to take on Chanute. The Blue Comets started their season with a 35-25 victory over Augusta, while the Nado fell 40-7 at Circle. Head Coach Deonta Wade says the score made the game look worse than it was.

The Nado gave up over 250 yards rushing against the Thunderbirds. Coffeyville will face a talented back in Quinton Harding, who ran for over 1,400 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2023. Harding ran for 97 yards and one score in week one. The Nado have their own talented back in Aaron Tunstall, who ran for over 140 yards in week one and had Coffeyville's only touchdown. Coach Wade says having a back like Tunstall helps their defense prepare to face a talented running back.

Coach Wade is 1-3 against Chanute, with the one win coming at home in his first season as head coach in 2020. The Nado look to end the streak of three straight losses with a win tonight. Pregame starts at 6:30pm with kick-off at 7:00pm on Sonshine 98.9 KQQF.

Raven Softball Preparing for Fall Games

The Red Raven softball program is gearing up for their first fall exhibition games next week.

The program is led by first year head coach Ashton Friend and by former Pitt State assistant coach Tyler Fuller. Freshman Emma Nelson says Friend has been approachable and helpful for players.

CCC only returns four players from last season's team, leading to a large amount of inexperience for the roster. Returner Hailey Isom says the sophomores have made an effort to step up.

Friend was an All-American at Cowley, before transferring to Washburn University to conclude her career. Isom says it's a great resource to have a coach who played recently.

The Ravens begin fall games next week, with games against Connors State College on the 17th at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., and Ottawa University on the 21st at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
