Raven Athlete Making Impact in Two Sports

A freshman athlete at Coffeyville Community College has already made a name for herself in multiple sports.

Raya Eilert is from Topeka, Kansas, and is a freshman outfielder on the Red Raven softball team, and expected to play a key role in the first season for Head Coach Ashton Friend. But, softball is not the only sport Eilert has proven to be talented in.

Eilert placed second overall in her first collegiate powerlifting competition, including first in her age group, second in squat, and second in deadlift. The powerlifting team also won the Collegiate Championships Team Championship during the competition held in Virginia Beach.

Eilert says she's been working hard to balance both her athletic responsibilities.

Although softball and powerlifting are drastically different in many ways, Eilert says the mental side of them are actually quite similar.

Raya will continue competing with the powerlifiting team at CCC, and can be seen on the softball field beginning in the 2025 season.

Red Raven men's basketball is back at Nellis Hall, hosting the Arkansas State-Newport Aviators in their final non-conference game of the season.

CCC is coming off of a massive come from behind victory over the Independence Pirates earlier this week, rallying from a 19-point deficit to remain unbeaten in league play. The Ravens have won three games in a row, and six of their last seven.

The Aviators enter the game 4-3 on the season, with just a 1-2 record away from home. The team features talented scorers and playmakers, but lacks the size and experience of the Raven frontcourt.

Coverage of the Red Ravens and Aviators begins tonight at 4:45 p.m. CT with tip off at 5, on US 98 and the Red Raven Sports Network.

Kansas City hosts the Las Vegas Raiders this afternoon, aiming to stay atop the AFC playoff picture. Both running back Isiah Pacheco and defensive end Charles Omenihu are expected to play today.

Pacheco has been out since Week 2 after suffering a fracture in his leg, while Omenihu has not played this season after suffering a knee injury in the AFC Championship.

Kansas City ranks towards the bottom of the NFL in stats such as time with a double digit lead, and wins by multiple scores, yet still sit 10-1. Former Patriots Coach Bill Belichick says this is because they are the best at clutch time football.

Coverage of the Chiefs-Raiders game begins this afternoon at 1 p.m. CT, with kickoff at 2 on the Mighty 690, KGGF.

Charger Girls Looking to Stay at Top of SEK

High school basketball season begins next week across Southeast Kansas, and the Cherryvale Lady Chargers are looking to maintain their status as contenders in the Tri-Valley League.

The Chargers are led by seventh year head coach Kelsey Overacker, and are coming off of a 13 win 2023-24 season. The team will be looking to replace a pair of key seniors, after the graduation of Bethany Umbarger and Jailee Reister.

Overacker says it helps when underclassmen receive minutes for the team early.

The Chargers have built a team identity around defense and speed, using their athleticism to race away from conference opponents. Overacker says it will be key to have a strong defense again this year.

The Lady Chargers open their season on December 6th against the Riverton Rams.

Ravens Rally for Dramatic Win over Indy

The Red Ravens remain unbeaten in Jayhawk Conference play, completing a 19-point comeback to stun the Independence Pirates 98-94.

Coffeyville trailed 26-7 early in the contest, and didn't take their first lead till deep into the second half. Assistant Coach Jordan Bailey says the team never gave up.

Brian Griffith finished with a career high 29 points, and was the best player on the floor in the second half. Justin Taylor also contributed 16 points, with key shots and free throws late. Bailey says those two were stars when it was needed most.

The Lady Ravens rolled to an 83-29 win in the opener over ICC.

Coffeyville played strong defense once again, forcing 24 total turnovers and holding the Pirates to 23% shooting. Assistant Coach Sierra McBride says the team is focused on a defense first mentality.

Karliey Parker led the team with 14 points, while sophomore Karys Washington had another strong performance, finishing with 13 points and six rebounds. McBride says Washington can be a difference maker for this team.

Head Coach Tony Turner says his team will look to play fast tonight.

The men enter the game 5-2 on the season, and look to stay unbeaten in league play. Even though the ICC men's team struggled last season, Head Coach Jay Herkelman says the Pirates are much improved this year.

General Manager JJ Picollo says the team made the deal with one goal in mind.

India and Singer were teammates at the University of Florida in 2018, when both were selected in the first round of the MLB Draft. India will turn 28 years old this offseason, and has been in the big leagues for four full seasons.

Picollo says when he's healthy, he can be one of the most impactful bats in the sport.

Wamego Senior Officially Commits to Tennessee

The top high school softball player in the state of Kansas is officially committed to the University of Tennessee.

Wamego senior Peyton Hardenburger has been dominating on the mound for years, leading the Red Raiders to back to back state titles.

Hardenburger verbally committed to the Volunteers last October, but made it official earlier this month. She says it's a fulfilling accomplishment to be headed to the SEC.

Peyton is ranked as the top player in the state, and the No. 4 overall recruit in the nation. She took official visits to LSU, Georgia, and Tennessee, but says the Volunteers stood out.

Hardenburger has already accomplished impressive feats, including winning Gatorade Kansas Softball Player of the Year, striking out 288 hitters in her junior season, and contributing to her community and working with organizations to combat child trafficking. She says she looks forward to embracing the Tennessee community.

Peyton and the Red Raiders will go for a three-peat when they open the season in late March.

Coffeyville returns to Nellis Hall for a doubleheader with the Independence Pirates on Tuesday night, before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Ravens Edge Butler to Share Title

A game played two months later than planned ended up being worth the wait for the Red Ravens.

Coffeyville survived a defensive slugfest to beat the Butler Grizzlies 15-14, and clinch a share of the KJCCC conference championship.

Coffeyville struggled to finish drives for most of the day, but got a boost from the defense who collected a key safety in the second quarter, and from kicker Roan McCarthy, who converted two field goals.

With CCC down six with a minute left, and their backs against the wall, Joseph Vick hooked up with Jalile Bost for a 33-yard touchdown to put the Ravens in front for good.

After the Raven defense made one final stand, Coffeyville became conference champions for the first time since 2021.

Coffeyville finishes the first regular season under Nick Dobler at 9-2, and ranked top 10 nationally. They will await potential postseason play.

Ravens Earn Doubleheader Sweep over Fort Hays Tech

It was a successful opening night in conference play for the Red Ravens, as they earn a doubleheader sweep over the Fort Hays Tech Northwest Tigers in Goodland.

Raven Football Battles Butler with Title Hopes

A heated conference rivalry has even more at stake when the Red Ravens travel to El Dorado to battle the Butler Grizzlies.

With a win, Coffevyille could force a three-way tie at the top of the KJCCC with Butler and Hutchinson, resulting in co-champions being crowned. It would be the first time Coffeyville has earned a conference championship since 2021.

Head Coach Nick Dobler says the position the team is in has finally begun to set in.

Butler displays one of the best defenses in the nation, led by linebacker Landon Boss and defensive lineman Seven Cloud. Dobler says the team is preparing for a physical battle.

Coffeyville was able to win a thriller against the Grizzlies in 2023, with a game-winning touchdown scored in the final four minutes. Dobler says when his team executes, there's no team they can't hang with.

Coverage of Coffeyville-Butler begins Saturday at 10:30 a.m. CT, with kickoff at 11, on US 98.

Red Ravens Open Conference Play in Goodland

The Red Ravens open conference play with a trip to Goodland to battle the Fort Hays Tech Tigers.

The Lady Ravens are looking for a 6-0 start to the season, after going unbeaten in non-conference play. The team won both matchups with Tech last season, including a 26 point win in Goodland.

Head Coach Tony Turner says, however, this is always one of the toughest road trips.

Coffeyville has had one of the top defenses in the conference this season, and are looking to put the pressure on the Tigers. Turner says the Ravens will look to beat them in transition.

On the men's side, Coffeyville enters conference play 3-2 with a pair of narrow losses to ranked opponents.

The team went 1-1 against Tech last season, with a win out in Goodland. Head Coach Jay Herekelman says this year's version of the Tigers are a bit of a mystery.

The Tigers do feature one of the top point guards in the conference in Chase Harris, who is averaging 23 points and five assists per game. Herkelman says he's always in attack mode.

Seager has been playing baseball since he was four years old and will be playing his sophomore season at Neosho this spring. He is from Derby, Kansas, and finished his freshman season with a 4.84 ERA in 10 appearances.

His favorite player is James Karinchak, an MLB relief pitcher who Seager says inspires him with his emotion and passion for the sport. Seager also enjoys lifting weights, golfing, and playing video games in his free time.

Saben will look to lead the Panthers rotation in the 2025 season, and continue his baseball career at the Division 1 level.

Chiefs Suffer First Loss

The dreams of an unbeaten season for the Kansas City Chiefs have come to an end, after suffering a 30-21 defeat to the Buffalo Bills.

Patrick Mahomes was kept in check, being held to 196 yards passing and throwing two interceptions. The Chiefs also struggled to run the ball, finishing the day with only 78 yards on the ground.

Mahomes says this is a good opportunity to regroup as a team.

Kansas City has won by just one possession in seven of their nine victories this season, struggling to pull away from teams as they have done the past two seasons. Mahomes says the team needs to improve in several areas, including his own play.

The Chiefs still hold the top seed in the AFC at 9-1 on the season, holding a half game lead on the Bills. The team will have a great opportunity to bounce back this week, traveling to Charlotte to take on the 3-7 Carolina Panthers.

Ravens Fall Short to NEO

Coffeyville ended non-conference play with a thriller at Nellis Hall, but came up just short in a 90-87 loss to the NEO Norsemen.

The Ravens finish non-conference with a 3-2 record, with both of their losses being narrow defeats to nationally ranked teams. Assistant Coach Jordan Bailey says the team is frustrated, but encouraged.

NEO shot lights out, converting on 17 3-point shots over the course of the game, and were led by freshman Damarion Vann-Kelly with 39 points, which is the sixth most in a game in NEO history. Bailey says it's difficult to battle when a player is that locked in.

Coffeyville was led by Rashid Kuta, who finished with 26 points and seven rebounds on a perfect 11-11 shooting. Bailey says he's already become a crucial piece.

The Ravens open conference play on the road this week, battling the Fort Hays Tech NW Tigers on Thursday before taking on the Colby Trojans on Saturday.

There are a couple Raven players dealing with injuries leading up to the game, including sophomore running back Tre Jones. Dobler says it's a difficult decision to know when to bring a guy back.

Coverage of Coffeyville and Butler begins next Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on US 98.

Head Coach Jay Herkelman says he anticipates another big time matchup.

NEO is notorious for a difficult pressure style defense, which primarily displays a 2-3 zone look. Herkelman says, however, they are lined up a little differently this year.

Coverage of Coffeyville-NEO begins tomorrow afternoon at 3:45 p.m., with tip off at 4 on US 98 and the Red Raven Sports Network.

The Chiefs have signed kicker Spencer Shrader off the New York Jets practice squad to replace Butker. Shrader has appeared in two games this season, making two field goals and three extra points without a miss.

Butker is one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history, currently sitting third in league history with an 89.2% conversion rate. Butker has made 90% of his kicks this season, and is expected to return around the end of December.

Bullpups Represented Well in All-District Team

A successful season for the Caney Valley Bullpups helps several players earn spots on the 2024 2A District 1 team.

On the defensive side of the ball, Matthews and Koester were two of seven chosen from the D-Line. Xavier Gaston was selected in the linebacker position, with Austin Freisburg receiving honorable mention. Drake Roberds was one of four selected in the defensive back category.
Caney finished the season with a 6-3 record.

Coffeyville faced a tough road environment for the first time this season, and NEO battled to a three point halftime deficit. The Ravens used a 36-9 run to close out the game, and earn their fifth consecutive victory to open the season.

Head Coach Tony Turner says he's already enjoying going to work with this group.

Both Raven rosters have displayed impressive chemistry and teamwork in the early stages of the season. Turner says he and Coach Herkelman have kids that have bought in.

The men's team will host NEO at Nellis Hall on Saturday afternoon, while the Lady Ravens will take the court next for their conference opener against Fort Hays Tech Northwest next Thursday.

Kelce's property was burglarized the following day on October 7th, according to Leawood, Kansas, PD. Kelce suffered more than $21,000 in total losses, including $20,000 in cash.

Both break-ins occured during the weekend the Chiefs defeated the New Orleans Saints at Arrowhead Stadium. No injuries have been reported in either case.

NEO has a track record of success in second matchups, making adjustments to defeat opponents in the rematch. Head Coach Tony Turner says NEO has been attacking more down low offensively.

Tonight is the first true road game for the Lady Ravens, playing at the NEO Fieldhouse for the second consecutive season. Turner says a key to success will be battling through the environment.

Coverage of CCC-NEO begins tonight at 5:15 p.m. CT with tip at 5:30 on US 98.

Self Becomes All-Time Winningest Coach at KU

The Kansas Jayhawks remained unbeaten on the basketball court with a 77-69 win over the Michigan State Spartans in the Champions Classic.

The victory was special for a different reason, however, with Head Coach Bill Self winning his 591st game at Kansas, and passing the legendary Phog Allen for the most in Jayhawk history.

Self says it's an accomplishment he values.

KU struggled offensively for most of the night, but senior forward Hunter Dickinson was able to lead with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Self says despite the shooting struggles, he's happy with the team's effort.

The Jayhawks will host the Oakland Golden Grizzlies out of the Horizon League on Saturday evening.

Head Coach Jake Martin says this is always a fun event.

The camp is split into two groups, for kids sixth grade and below, and for kids seventh grade and up. Martin says they will be focusing on the fundamentals.

Baseball is a sport of habit and routine, with the best players mastering drills that work best for them. Martin says this is a great opportunity to build habits.

For questions or more information regarding the camps, contact Coach Martin at jake.martin@coffeyville.edu or by calling 913-850-2758.

The Red Ravens rolled to a doubleheader sweep at Nellis Hall on Monday night in front of a large crowd.

Coffeyville is 8-2 on the season and have won three games in a row. They will play the Butler Grizzlies next Saturday, with a chance to clinch a share of their first conference championship since 2021.

Red Ravens Host Independence in Rivalry Game

The Red Ravens control their own destiny in their quest for a Jayhawk conference championship, and match up with an arch rival in their final home game.

Coffeyville welcomes Indepedence to Veterans Memorial Stadium tomorrow afternoon, with the Ravens knowing that wins in their final two regular season games would ensure at least a split of the KJCCC conference title, their first since 2021.

Joseph Vick has been the starting QB for the Ravens the past two weeks, stepping up for the injured Chris Arviso. Offensive coordinator Angel Ortiz says Vick is playing with more composure.

Independence brings a quality run game to the field, with multiple players that can impact the offense. Defensive coordinator Kosi Eldridge says the team is focused on slowing the run.

Coffeyville has shown flashes of an elite offense, but is still working on putting a complete performance together. Ortiz says when the team stays out of their own way, they're tough to stop.

CCC ends the season with Independence and Butler, two heated rivals standing in the way of potential postseason football. Eldridge says the team needs to handle their business one play at a time.

Coverage of the Ravens and Pirates begins tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. CT with kickoff at 1 on US 98 and the Red Raven Sports Network. All Montgomery County citizens get in for free with valid ID, due to Montgomery County Appreciation Day.

West Elk is currently ranked 6th in the state in 8-man Division 1, with Little River right behind in 7th. Haag says this is what all the work builds up to.

Kickoff has been moved up due to the threat of weather in the area tonight. The game kicks off at 5 p.m. tonight in Howard.

Sophomore Kate Eveleigh says it's a great opportunity to give back.

The Raven Spirit Squad has been busy with community events, as well as all home football and basketball games. Sophomores Kinley Cook says it's a unique experience that can't be beat.

While it may seem intimidating to learn a routine to perform in front of a large crowd in one day, Eveleigh says some of the best memories can happen when you take a chance.

Coverage of the Red Raven football game begins tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. CT on US 98 and the Red Raven Sports Network.

Ravens Impress in Opening Doubleheader

Norika Welch had 13 points and three steals to pace CCC. Assistant Coach Kamri Anderson says she can do it all.

Former IHS point guard Camdyn Eytcheson impressed in the fourth quarter, having five points, two assists and three steals. Anderson says the local product is already making an impact.

The men's team also impressed in their first game at Nellis Hall this season, racing away from the Allen County Red Devils 93-58.

The Ravens shot 50% from the field, and also dominated the rebound battle, and played aggressive defense all night.

Assistant Coach Jordan Bailey says the team has made effort the biggest priority.

Coach Herkelman challenged Raven fans to make Nellis Hall the toughest place to play in the conference this season. Bailey says on Opening Night, the fans delivered.

The women are 3-0 on the young season, while the men improve to 2-1. Both teams are in action again Monday night for a doubleheader at Nellis Hall, with coverage beginning at 5 p.m. on US 98 and the Red Raven Sports Network.

Red Raven volleyball is gearing up for the opening round of the Region VI tournament tomorrow.

CCC is taking momentum into the postseason, with a straight sets win over Independence on Saturday. The Ravens needed to win in order to officially clinch a spot in the Region Tournament.

Head Coach Kandi Midgett says it was good to see the team rise to the occasion.

The Ravens match up with the defending national champion Cowley Tigers, who haven't lost a match in two full seasons. Midgett says there are a few things the team must do to put pressure on Cowley.

The winner of tomorrow evening's match will play the winner of Highland and Allen County on Saturday in Wichita.

Solid Start for Raven Basketball

It was a promising opening weekend for Red Raven basketball.

The Lady Ravens begin their year with a 2-0 weekend at the Gilham's Classic, beating Connors State College 88-55 on Friday night before beating NEO 69-53 on Saturday.

The Raven offense was fluid despite plenty of new faces. Assistant coach Sierra McBride says it was a strong first impression.

Freshman Aspen Clarkson led the team with 17 points on Friday. McBride says she's a player that other teams can forget about.

The Lady Raven defense forced more than 40 turnovers on the weekend. Sophomore Ava Baker says the team has made it a priority this year.

The men open the season 1-1, falling to Moberly Area 82-78 on Friday night, before a bounce back 80-72 win on Saturday. Both teams are at Nellis Hall tomorrow night for the first doubleheader of the season, with coverage beginning at 5:10 p.m. CT on US 98 and the Red Raven Sports Network.

Ravens Win Thriller Over Dodge City

Red Raven football wins a thriller at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Stakes were high on Saturday afternoon, with both the Ravens and Dodge City entering the matchup 6-2 and needing to win to stay alive for a conference championship.

With Coffeyville clinging to a 13-12 lead and Dodge City attempting a field goal for the win, the Ravens made their biggest play of the season.

Brec Long had a 54-yard touchdown reception late in the first half, and the Raven defense did just enough, with Cyler Christmas securing an interception and D.J. Jackson having a sack and blocked extra point.

Coffeyville controls their own destiny, as winning each of the last two games would earn the Ravens at least a share of the Jayhawk Conference title.

The Ravens are back at home on Saturday afternoon to battle rival Independence, with coverage beginning at 12:30 p.m. and kickoff at 1 on US 98 and the Red Raven Sports Network.

Bullpups Season Ends Against Council Grove

The Caney Valley Bullpups season comes to an end after a playoff loss to the Council Grove Braves 35-14.

Traxcyn Garton had a rushing touchdown for the Bullpups, and Layne Denny found Ben Matthews for an 81-yard touchdown in the 4th quarter, but the combination of Luke Stewart to Landon Dody was huge for Council Grove. Ace Monihen also provided some big rushing yards for the Braves offense.

Council Grove will take on Silver Lake in the next round of the playoffs, while Caney's season ends at 6-3.

KGGF salutes seniors Logan Burnett, Xavier Gaston, Kole Rigdon, Malachi Thomas, Camden Weimer, Ace Koester, Jack Halligan, Ben Matthews, and Alex Rupert.

Caney Prepares For Braves.... Again

For the third season in a row, the Caney Valley Bullpups will face the Council Grove Braves in the playoffs, deafeating them 16-3 in 2022, but falling last year 32-14.

Layne Denny had four touchdown passes in last weeks game against Riverton. Coach Criss Davis says the entire offense has put in tremendous work to improve that aspect of their game.

The Bullpups are 4-0 at home this year. Davis says having a supportive hometown crowd has been a big boost for the team.

Davis calls winning the turnover battle the biggest key for the Pups to come away with a victory.

With a 6:30 kickoff, pregame will begin around 6:10 on Greatest Hits 104.1 and PupNation on YouTube.

Raven Basketball Kicks off New Season

Basketball season has arrived in Coffeyville, with both the men's and women's team's opening their new year tonight.

The Lady Ravens open the season at home against Connors State College, a team that qualified for the national tournament a year ago. CCC has plenty of new faces on the roster, with a lot of questions to answer early in the season.

Head Coach Tony Turner says the sophomores with experience will need to lead the team tonight.

On the men's side, the team is in Missouri to open the year against a tough Moberly Area squad. The team is hoping to rebound after an uncharacteristic down season a year ago, and climb back to the top of the conference.

Head Coach Jay Herkelman says he's looking for a few specifics from his team tonight.

Coverage of the Lady Raven game begins at 6:45 p.m. CT on US 98 and the Red Raven Sports Network. While the men's game will not be broadcasted, there will be frequent score and stat updates during the women's game.

CCC Player Spotlight: Charles Caporaso

KGGF concludes the Preseason Player Spotlight Series with a look at a sophomore that is looking to be among the best centers in junior college basketball.

Charles Caporaso returns to Coffeyville for his sophomore season, after appearing in 27 games as a freshman. Caporaso, much like fellow returner Brian Griffith, started the season slow, but had transformed into a crucial piece by the end of the year.

Caporaso says this year's team has great leadership.

Charles is from Lake Mary, Florida, and spent the offseason adding more than 30 pounds in order to be more physically dominant in 2024-25. He also has high praise for Head Coach Jay Herkelman, and says he's confident in the team's direction.

Charles and the Ravens open their season tonight at 7 p.m. against Moberly Area.

CCC Player Spotlight: Brian Griffith

KGGF concludes the Player Spotlight Series with a look at two sophomore returners that are expected to be among the league's best this season.

Sophomore point guard Brian Griffith returns to Coffeyville, after averaging 12.3 points per game in his freshman season. Griffith struggled with his shooting early in the season, but took a leap after the winter break and was one of the team's most valuable players.

He is one of three sophomore point guards on the roster. He says that gives the team a chance to have a head start.

Griffith is expected to split time between the point guard spot, as well as a shooting guard role, with the addition of transfer Justin Taylor. Griffith says he feels he and Taylor could be a special duo.

Brian and the Ravens tip off their season tonight at 7 p.m. CT against Moberly Area.

Raven Football Hosts Dodge City in Ranked Showdown

The Red Ravens return home, looking to keep their conference title hopes alive.

Coffeyville is looking for their seventh win of the season, and their third in league play, when the Dodge City Conquistadors come to town tomorrow afternoon. Both teams are nationally ranked, with the Red Ravens at #13 and Dodge at #15.

Dodge City was picked to finish in last in the KJCCC before the season. Head Coach Nick Dobler says, however, they've found ways to be successful.

With Butler's win over Hutchinson last week, both teams remain in contention for the conference championship, but the loser of this weekend's game will fall out of contention. Dobler says he's hoping his team uses the home field advantage.

Coverage of Coffeyville and Dodge City begins tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 p.m. CT with kickoff at 1 on US 98 and the Red Raven Sports Network.
