The defending Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Champions are ranked in the top 10 NJCAA Division I preseason poll. The Coffeyville Community College men’s basketball team comes in at fourth as they get ready to start their season. The Red Ravens open up their 2018-19 season on Friday with a home appearance against Fort Scott in the Community State Bank Classic at Nellis Hall.

Only one other team from the Conference earned a spot in the preseason top 25 polls. The Hutchinson Blue Dragons are ranked ninth.

With October all but over, the Coffeyville Community College athletics are now awaiting the regular basketball season to get started as it will all get underway this week. CCC’s Jana Kastler wanted to remind fans that your basketball season tickets are ready for boosters to pick up. They are at the CCC Foundation Office located at 10th & Willow, and you will have to go inside, as the drive thru window is not working. Red Ravens basketabll first game is this Thursday night at  7:00 pm as the CCC Red Raven ladies take on Redlands Community College. Come out and support the ladies on Thursday night, then on Friday, Nov. 2nd is the men's Community State Classic games at 5:00 and 7:00 pm. Both Thursday and Friday nights ball games will be covered on your home for Red Raven Athletics 98.1 KUSN FM. Saturday, Nov. 3rd the men's Community State Classic games continue in the afternoon at 1:00 and 3:00 pm. C.C.C. Red Raven Football will be on the road this Saturday as well as they travel to Ellsworth Iowa, we will also have that football game covered for you on 98.1 KUSN with a start time of 12:30 in the afternoon. Then on Saturday Nov. 3rd the defending champs, Lady Ravens Volleyball team will be hosting the District Tournament for chance to go back to Nationals.

Week 1 of the Kansas High School Football Playoffs is behind us and the field has been cut in half. Just five teams in Southeast Kansas remain in the fight for the State Championship. Three teams in 4A(Pittsburg, Fort Scott and Coffeyville) and two teams in 3A(Parsons and Frontenac). Of those five remaining teams three are on the road and two are at home. Week one brought us some dominate wins and some big upsets what will week two have in store?

The Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens were back at home this past weekend. Hoping to continue their momentum and confidence from last weeks big rivalry win beating I.C.C. This week however would be a much tougher test for Coffeyville as they hosted the number two team in the country and one of the top teams of the conference. The Garden City Broncbusters who entered the game at 7 and 0 traveled across the state to Veterans Memorial Stadium to play. From the very beginning of the game both teams were able to fend each other off the field quickly as it was a uneventful first few drives. It wasn't until Carson Proctor QB for the Red Ravens connected with Kendrick Jones for a 95 yard TD pass that gave Coffeyville the early lead 7 to 0 but from there on out it was the Garden City’s offense making big plays. Finishing the first quarter with a TD on the ground and sacking Proctor in the endzone for a safety to finish the first quarter 9 to 7. Aside from a blocked field goal that was recovered for a 65 yard TD by Brion Murray the Ravens went silent offensively. Coffeyville spent 17 minutes on the football field, substantially losing the time of possession battle, wearing out their defense and getting beat on the ground all night long. Garden City finished with 5 TD with 351 yards on 73 run plays, and an addition score through the air. Coffeyville gets held to 166 total yards on 45 plays through the night and lose 51 to 15 at home to Garden City. Red Ravens now at 4 and 5 on the season will have to travel to Iowa Falls next week, they go up to Ellsworth Community College and play the Panthers as they hope to get back on the winning track before the season concludes.

First round playoff action for Field Kindley High School. They came into the game as the 4A West #5 Seed facing the 4A West #12 Seed El Dorado. Late into the first quarter the game still tied at 0-0 Coffeyville would strike first. A CJ Kelly catch and run would make it 8-0 after Kelly also made an amazing one handed catch on the two point conversion. The Nado would lead heading into halftime 16-6. Coffeyville scored a touchdown early in the third quarter to make it 22-6. El Dorado would again cut it to a 10 point lead and start to feel the momentum shift to their side. However all it would take was one play as Trey Myrie would all but take the momentum back for Coffeyville and give them a 16 point again 28-12. The final 46-12 would send the Golden Tornado to the second round.

An upset of #13 Ark City over #4 Mulvane means a second home playoff game for FKHS this Friday at 7:00pm.

The Fredonia Yellow jackets hosted their first round playoff game last night on their home field. It was a tough test as the 6 and 2 Anthony-Harper-Chaparral Roadrunners came to town with a very talented offense. From the beginning it was a game Fredonia wishes they had another chance to play. The Roadrunners were able to establish their play style very quickly which was the big play. QB Jake Burke for Chaparral went for 7 TD last night, 4 through the air and 3 on the ground as he was the majority of the offensive production. Fredonia defense was unable to stop all but a few drives that Chaparral had and then could not respond. Turning the ball over twice on a kickoff and many other times throughout the evening has Fredonia's offense looking a bit lost as well. The yellowjackets were a team all year that played very well on both sides of the ball and just simply got beat last night losing 55 to 0. Coming out flat footed at this point on the schedule will come back to hurt you as it did for Fredonia. Yellow Jackets finish their season at 5 and 4.

The Caney Valley Bullpups football season came to an end Friday night when they fell to Priarie View 27-7.  The Bullpups were on the road for their first round Kansas State football playoff football game.  The Pups finished the season at 6-3 overall.

The Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens still riding high off of their week 9 win against rival Independence 21 to 16. A game which they responded well to adversity and came back in the fourth to win for their 80th time in the storied rivalry. This Saturday they will need that to carry over, as the Red Ravens may be their toughest test yet on the year. Undefeated Garden City Community College travels across the state to play Coffeyville this Saturday Night. A Bronc Buster team that were the 2016 National Champs, has not lost a regular season game since last October, truly proves to be a tough test for the Red Ravens. Garden City comes in as one of the more dominant offensive teams throughout the nation, large in part to their run game. G.C.C.C. averaging over 300 rushing yards per game, with a pair of very talented pair of running backs. Sometimes putting 8 players on the offensive line is a big reason Coffeyville Head Coach Aaron Flores mentioned they will try and match that with added lineman on the defensive side. Talking with coach Flores he says his defensive backs have the size and strength to make tough open field tackles so it will be tough to bring them off the field, but coach Flo mentioned they will need to stack the line more. Offensively the Red Ravens need to match time of possession, win the field position battle, and consistently pick up first downs. 3 things that will keep the Garden City’s offense off the field and not able to gain momentum. Head Coach Aaron Flores also said in practice these past few week they have stressed avoiding giving up the big plays or big penalties. Something that has really hurt the Red Ravens all season long is those penalty numbers. If they can keep those down, not turn the ball over and keep Garden City off the field consistently, they have a chance of pulling off the upset at home. Two weeks ago Field Kindley sat at 2-4 on the season and was looking at having to go on the road for their first round playoff game. Head Coach Darrin Wegner knew then that this team was better than their record. With the west bracket being so close and Coffeyville winning their last two games they finished 5^th on the West Side of 4A. They will host (2-6)El Dorado this Friday and Coach Wegner says they are much better than their record. He says just because they have only two wins on the season doesn't mean you can over look them. El Dorado has a lot of talent including what Coach Wegner says might be the best running back they've faced all season. The Wildcats do have problems with turnovers and the Nado will have to capitalize on those.

A 6-2 finish for the Caney Valley Bullpups in their first year in Class 3A Division 1.  Head Coach Criss Davis says he's pleased with how the season went.  He was says the players performed really well and did a great job dealing with adversity.  3A DI is a very tough division with (8-0)Galena, (6-2)Parsons, (6-2)Frontenac and the (6-2)Bullpups.  There was a bit of parity in the division as well with Frontenac beating Parsons, Parsons beating Caney and Caney beating Frotenac.

Bullpups first round matchup will be @ (7-1)Prairie View 7:00pm kickoff and can be heard on the Mighty 690.

The Neodesha Bluestreaks still riding high off their final week win over rival Fredonia Yellow Jackets at home 35 to 20. We spoke with head coach of the Blue Streaks John Black tonight as he says his guys are really gaining traction. Normally teams at this point in the year are losing players to injury, however Neodesha continues to gain key players they lost early in the year. The return of LB #5 Blaze Grimes last week really helped defending the run. Returning players will help the Bluestreaks this week as well as coach Black says he is very happy the way Mayson Ellis has turned into a true leader of this offense. Having to step in for and injured Blaze Grimes early in the year, and Neodesha having to change their offensive scheme was a challenge. Black again is happy with the way Ellis has improved with his reads, and accuracy and expects him to be a huge factor for the upcoming game. Neodesha will battle a winless team in Independent Panthers tonight up in Wichita, though coach Black does not want to overlook this team as they have played a very difficult schedule with tough teams. He also compared themselves to Independent as last week the Blue Streaks were in the same shoes and came out and played very well. Kickoff is tonight at 7PM from Independent High School as the Bluestreaks will look to win 2 straight.

A 52-15 win over Chanute in the final game of the season led to the 4-4 finish for Labette County High School. However, due to point differential the Grizzlies would finish one spot below the Blue Comets in the final standings. LCHS gets the 12 Seed and a matchup with the 5 Seed Bishop Miege Stags for the first round of the playoffs. Head Coach Sean Price wasn't too thrilled with the seed they fell to.

Bishop Miege is 6-2 and will host the Grizzlies who are much better at home(3-1) than on the road(1-3), so it will prove to be a tough matchup for LCHS.

The Parsons Vikings have impressed many throughout the 2018 season, as they finished at 6 and 2 on the year. A tough finishing month saw a very difficult stretch of teams for the Vikings, as they were just beat by Galena High School at home 52 to 14 this past week. Head coach of the Vikings Kurt Friess says the Bulldogs of Galena were a physical team that just overpowered his guys upfront. He says the tough stretch of physical opponents has prepared his team well for the next test as they battle an equally big, and physical team in the Girard Trojans. Trojans finished 5 and 3 on the year, and will travel into Parsons to play the Vikings this Friday night. Friess says his guys aren’t the biggest, but they are fast, and very physical as they plan to defend against the run game as their main priority. Hoping to win the battle upfront and force Girard into long down situations. Friess also mentioned that this tough stretch of games in the final month has taken its toll on the starting roster as many players are questionable or are injured for the upcoming week. A definite concern, but he is overly happy in the way the younger have stepped up into those roles for the injured players and expects his guys to play the way they have all year and move on through the first round. With the win, Parsons would either play Prairie View or the Caney Valley Bullpups. Kickoff is at 7 PM this Friday night from Parsons KS.

The Yellow Jackets from Fredonia High School have finished their 2018 regular season at 5 and 3, and 4 and 3 within the Tri-Valley District. That finish lands them a home game for the first round of the postseason. They find themselves in the 4th quadrant of the 2A Bracket and will host the Anthony-Harper-Chaparral High School Roadrunners. Fredonia coming off a tough 2 weeks as they’ve lost two straight games, first against a tough Douglass team then last week against rival Neodesha. Yellow jackets have a tough test again Friday as the Roadrunners come to their home field at 6 and 2 on the year, as speaking with coach Marc Svaty, he knows A.H.C High School is a very physical ball club. They are ran by a very talented quarterback that has ran and thrown the ball very well through 2018. They hope to make the Roadrunners beat them with someone else besides the SR. QB, as well as continue their dominant run offense. Fredonia runs the wishbone run offense better than most but they continue to look to throw the ball a few more times and catch the opposing team off guard. Coach Svaty says his guys are excited to get back on the football field and back on the winning track, a tough test ensues but if they can win the possession battle and avoid big plays against them, the Yellowjackets look to move to the next round where they’d meet either Eureka or Conway Springs. The West Elk Patriots wrapped their season last week against the Sedan Indians unfortunately falling on the road 62 to 8 finishing the year at 1 and 7. Talking with coach Haag on that Sedan team he congratulates coach Holt and the rest of his boys as they are one of the top teams the district as they finish at 7 and 1 on the year and will be a very difficult team to match up against in the postseason. As for the PAtriots, Coach Haag says he is overly proud of the way his boys handled this season. Times where kids could get easily discouraged they kept their heads down and played hard the whole way through. He is very optimistic of next year as well, as the young kids stepping up into those roles for injured player this past season gives them the game experience they’ll need to be a good set of upperclassman. He wants all his guys to know that life will bring more discouraging times and you need to be able to stay positive and optimistic like they have been all year. He wishes the best to the seniors and is already ready for the Patriots to be back on the gridiron.

Regular season high school football has come to an end in the state of Kansas and that means it's playoff time. A rivalry game that dates back to 1925 took place last night in Independence as the Coffeyville Red Ravens faced the Independence Pirates in the Montgomery County Showdown. Both community colleges started flat footed offensively, wanting to the run the football but both D-lines came to play stopping most plays forcing more throws than wanted early in a game. Coffeyville was able to score in the first quarter on a great back shoulder throw and catch from Proctor to Thomas-Cobb for a 32-yard TD putting them up 7 through the first. Both secondaries for the defenses also stepped up in this game as from there on out, Carson Proctor went fairly silent finishing 11 of 24 for 101 yards, and C.C.C’s defense picked off Chase Hildreth of Independence 3 times and didn’t allow a TD through the air. Late in the second quarter, Coffeyville was able to get a run game started as Marco Lee finished a good drive for the Red Ravens with a 1-yard TD which was followed by a quick field goal by I.C.C just before the half putting the score at 14 to 3. With seemingly all the momentum coming out of the locker room, it was actually Independence was on the attack as their defense was able to recover a fumble to the end-zone cutting the lead to 5, then too the risk and came up short on the 2-point conversion putting the score 14-9. Shortly after it was Independence again in the third quarter storming down the field on a good drive that finished with an 11-yard run for the score and the lead 16 to 14. A scoring play was not the biggest play of this game, as later in the 3^rd, a short field goal attempt by I.C.C was blocked by defensive back #1 Markquese Bell who finished with an INT, 4.5 tackles and a few huge plays down the stretch of the game as he also took home our Simple Simon’s player of the game. That blocked field goal was the spark the needed as early in the forth the Red Ravens where able to drive down the field with their run game and score with a Deshawn Massey TD to give them the lead. Many times, this season Coffeyville’s defense has stopped great drives as they where able to silence I.C.C for the remainder of the game giving the Red Ravens their 80^th win in this storied rivalry and putting them at 3 and 5 on the year. Tough game next week as they host the 2016 national champs Garden City Bronc Busters at home, and covered on your home for Red Raven Football 98.1 KUSN kickoff at 7PM.

The Golden Tornado came into the final week of the regular season needing to win their last game to finish 4-4 and to host a first round playoff game. A tough test in a 7-1 Christ Prep Academy stood in their way. It was a hard fought defensive battle for most of the game as neither offense could find much of a rythm a turning point in the game was CJ Kelly’s 90 yard fumble return for a touchdown in the second quarter. Coffeyville gets the win 24-14 and will finishes 5th of 16 teams on the west side of 4A. They will host 2-5 El Dorado.

After falling short in their homecoming game last week, the Red Ravens of Coffeyville return to the gridiron tonight to face off against rival Independence. Both teams come into this game struggling on the 2018 season as the Pirates of Independence are 1 and 5 on the year and 1 and 4 in the Jayhawk conference. Red Ravens find themselves just above the Pirates right at 2 and 5 on the year and an equal conference record at 1 and 4. Both these teams coming off multiple consecutive losses as they look to battle for the win. Speaking with Head Coach Aaron Flores on the game, he says his guys are prepared for a battle but are composed enough to ignore all the dramatic activities that come between these two teams. Keeping your focus on the field and staying with your responsibilities is the goal as the Red Ravens look to create and take advantage of big plays as well as avoid the big play from I.C.C. If they can create extra opportunities and stop the big play from the Pirates coach Flores thinks his guys are ready to pull in a win on the road. Our final regular season edition of the High School Football game of the week was in Neodesha last night and did not disappoint. The Fredonia Yellow Jackets traveled in to battle of against rival Neodesha High School Bluestreaks. Yellow Jackets entered at 5 and 2 overall and Neodesha winless on the year so a lot on the line for Fredonia postseason placement. From the very beginning Fredonia starting off well continuing to run the football straight up the middle with ease as they led by two possessions heading into halftime 20 to 6. As they entered the second half both offense and defense for Neodesha stepped up in a big way. Defensively forcing Fredonia scoreless through the second half, as well as a few turnovers late in the game that iced it for Neodesha. The Blue Streaks last night had a breakout game by both QB Mayson Ellis and WR Toby Curtis. Ellis and Curtis hooked up through the air twice for a touchdown and late in the game Toby Curtis recovered a fumble a took it 99 yards for a score all but ending it for Neodesha. After putting up 29 points in the second half and leaving Fredonia scoreless the Blue Streaks net their first win on the season at home 35 to 20. Stayed tuned for post season scheduling.

A lot riding on the final game of the 2018 regular season for Field Kindley High School. A win would all but guarantee a home game for the first round of the playoffs as the Nado currently sit at 6^th of 16 teams. Coffeyville is one of five 3-4 team but have the best point differential of those teams. A win over 7-1 Christ Prep Academy would lock them into the 6^th spot or could move them up to the 5^th spot. To host the Golden Tornado just have to finish 8^th or better. It'll be a afternoon kickoff on a Saturday for the game against Christ Prep Academy and Head Coach Darrin Wegner says that does come with a little bit of an advantage.

CPA is a private school in Lenexa and Coach Wegner says they have some athletes and have won several games by a lot of points so it should be a good test for Coffeyville. 1:40pm pregame and 2:00pm kick off on Star 98.9.

The Neodesha Bluestreaks end their season with a tough rivalry game coming up tonight against the Fredonia Yellow Jackets. It will be apart of our High School Game of The Week so you can tune into the action starting with a 6:50 pregame and kick off at 7:00. We sat down with head coach of the Blue Streaks John Black on a tough 2018 season as they are still winless in large part to many injuries suffered early in the season, bad breaks and mental mistakes has led to a 0 and 7 year thus far. Coach Black said they hope to have SR Blaze Grimes back tonight but are still without a few others. Coach Black says his guys are excited to get out tonight and take down rival Fredonia but know they are a very physical team that like to run the football and do it better than most. They are ready for a physical battle but plan to get it to their edge players to try and outrun Fredonia with speed. A fun game on tap as the Yellow Jackets sit right in the middle of the Tri-Valley District at 4 and 2 and as we spoke the Blue Streaks winless on the year and couldn't think of a more perfect way to finish the season than with a home field victory tonight against Fredonia. The Fredonia Yellow-Jackets will play their last game of the season this Friday on the road against Tri-Valley rival Neodesha Bluestreaks. Yellow-Jackets suffered a tough loss last Friday  to the Bulldogs of Douglass High School 42 to 21. That loss put Fredonia at 4 and 2 on the year and right in the middle of the Tri- Valley District. Neodesha comes into Friday winless on the year, though coach Svaty really stressed not to overlook this team. They have been banged up from injury all year long, and will return some key players to their offense. Svaty also knows that Neodesha does not want to finish without a win this season and there's no better way to finish the season than beating your rival. Coach Svaty has his guys prepped for a shootout, as their game plan doesn’t change much offensively. Running the wishbone formation better than most as they look to run straight at them and wear out the line. Defensively they look to focus on Mayson Ellis and force the Bluestreaks to generate yards elsewhere. It's been a disappointing season up to this point for Labette County High School. With one game left in the season setting at 3-4 they host league opponent and 4-3 Chanute. Both teams are coming off losses as the Grizzlies fell to Ulysses 35-22 and Chanute to Coffeyville 40-24. LCHS Head Coach Sean Price says he is tired of losing. Coach Price says they played a good first and third quarter against Ulysses but just couldn't put a full game together. He says he hopes that changes and they can string a full four quarters together against the Blue Comets of Chanute.

The Parsons Vikings are one win away from finishing this 2018 season off with just one loss. Last Friday Parsons nets a huge win on the road against the Caney Valley Bullpups. Caney Valley, a team that can run the ball as good as anyone and is a stout offensive team, was held to just 22 points as the Vikings go on to win 42 to 22. Coach Kurt Friess of the Vikings says Caney Valley is a physical team that they found flat footed early on, and they never looked back winning by 20 and moving to 6 and 12 on the year. Coach Friess is so proud of his guys effort throughout the 2018 season, and knew at the beginning of the season they had the talent to be a one loss team, just didn't quite believe till now. With one week left on the year, it may be their toughest test yet. Parsons will come back home to battle off against one of the top teams in the state, Galena High School. The Bulldogs have embarrassed most of their opponents this year as coach Friess says he and his guys know the talent of Galena but are confident in their game plan. Both the Vikings and the Bulldogs come in with quite a bit of momentum, Galena 7 and 0 on the year and Parsons winners of their last 2 straight that were against very difficult opponents. Parsons Vikings host their final game of the year this Friday kickoff at 7 PM against a tough Galena High School Bulldogs team.

The Red Ravens hosted Hutchinson in a Rivalry Homecoming Game for Coffeyville this past Saturday. The Blue Dragons came into this game ranked #4 nationally in the NJCAA and a top of the Jayhawk conference. Winners of their last 4 straight and Coffeyville currently in the middle of a losing streak, this game showed signs of trouble for the Red Ravens. Early on big run plays were the issue for the Coffeyville defense. Giving up a 90 yard run to RB Dezmon Jackson in the first quarter which the Blue Dragons hung on to that slim lead into the second quarter. The Red Ravens were able to respond in the 2nd with a TD run by Marco to tie the game, though the Blue Dragons had a great response to Coffeyville scoring by going down the next drive and again Jackson, this time from 35 yards ran it to the house for Hutchinson. Just before the halftime period the biggest play of the game occured. As Coffeyville worked their way down the field trying to tie the game before halftime, QB Carson Proctor was hit as he threw, resulting in the ball being intercepted for a TD giving Hutch a 21 to 7 lead at halftime. A slow 3rd quarter oinly saw Hutch tacking on 3 points with a 31 yard field goal. Entering the 4th the Ravens trailed 24 to 7 and tried to rally back. As WR Giles caught a 34 yard pass from Proctor to cut the lead to 24 to 14. The Hutchinson defense was to much from there. The entire game, not giving Proctor any space as the sacked our QB a total of 9 times. Work to the offensive line for the ed Ravens this week as they prepare to travel to rival, Independence Community College this Saturday kickoff at 7 PM. For week 7 of our High school Football game of the week, we traveled to Cherryvale High School where the Chargers played host to Tri-Valley foe the Neodesha Bluestreaks. Neodesha winless on the year and have suffered quite a few injuries though head coach John Black had his guys prepared for the run attack from Cherryvale. The Chargers did a great job early on establishing a balanced play. SR. QB Cafe Addis connected with Zanie Lantz for a 35 TD in the first quarter giving them an early 6 point lead. Later through the first RB Garrett Novotny continued is dominance breaking a run down the right to put the Chargers than up 14 - 0 after the 2 point conversion. The Blue Streaks did a great job breaking down field shortly before halftime and getting points up on the board as they headed into the locker room down 8, 14 to 6. In the second half Novotny put in another TD on the ground along with the Defensive lineman McPherson intercepting the passing from Ellis and running it back 30 yards for the interception. That gave them a 28 to 6 lead at one point, where Neodesha head coach John Black flipped the game plan and let Ellis throw a bit more. Ellis did throw a few interceptions but Blue Streaks did get on the board once more before time expired losing 28 to 12. Doesn’t get any easier for the Blue Streaks having to play Fredonia next week, as the Cherryvale Charges will host Eureka for the final week.

Senior Night for Field Kindley as it's the last home regular season game. League rival Chanute came to town with a 4-2 record. The Golden Tornado would capitalize early off a Blue Comet fumble and take an early 6-0 lead. Chanute responded taking a 7-6 lead after a couple of long runs by back up QB and WR Corbett Kimberlin. The Nado had their run game going and would head into half up 14-10. It was all Coffeyville in the second half as Jalen Logan and Brendan Graham were almost unstoppable running the football. Both rushed for over a one hundred yards and the Nado came away with a big home win 40-24.

Coffeyville now 3-4 with one game remaining as they travel to Lenexa next Saturday to take on Christ Prep Academy looking to finish the regular season at .500.

The Red Ravens are back home for the first time in a month and looking for their first win since September 8^th. A three game road trip which included losses to Butler, Highland and Dodge City has CCC excited to be back home. Fittingly the first home game in a month is also Homecoming for CCC and Hutchinson comes to town. Head Coach Aaron Flores says there is a lot of history between the two schools. 6-1 Hutch has a high powered offense scoring almost 40 points a game while staying balanced averaging 191 yards rushing and 207 yards passing a game.

Those three straight losses for Coffeyville have been some very tough close fought games that the Ravens couldn't quite close out. Coach Flores says despite the losses the players have not given up on the team. QB Carson Proctor continues to improve each week and even used his feet as a weapon last game. Coach Flores says for the matchup with the Blue Dragons it'll be about limiting their big plays and converting on some big plays of their own. With just 2 games left in the regular season for Kansas High School football, the Golden Tornado are coming off what might be the hardest loss of the season. Trailing Abilene 30-25 with over a minute left the Nado were marching and looking to take the lead but a fumble would bring the game to an end and the Cowboys would come out victorious 30-25. FKHS is now 2-4 and will face league rival Chanute who is 4-2. Head Coach Darrin Wegner says when it comes to Chanute's defense they have to watch out for Qualin Powell. It's the last home game of the regular season and will be senior night for what is a very senior lead team. Coach Wegner is hoping they come out with the win and move one step closer to finishing the season at .500.

The Neodesha Bluestreaks have been struck with tough breaks all season long. Losing key veteran players to their lineup week in week out. We talked with head coach of the Bluestreaks John Black as he says they come into this Friday still banged up. He did want to commend his young guys for stepping up, and playing their hearts out for much longer than they expected to this season. With two weeks left in the season, Neodesha is still winless on the 2018 campaign but returns to the gridiron on the road this Friday at Tri-Valley foe Cherryvale to play the 2 and 4 Chargers. Black says the Chargers have one of the better run games he has seen in awhile, with one of the more talented backs carrying the football with Garrett Novotny. If the Bluestreaks can win the battle upfront, get to number 40 before he can get the open field. The game plan is simple, make Cherryvale uncomfortable and make them beat them with someone else besides the running back. The Fredonia Yellow Jackets return to the feirld this Saturday for their second to last game on the season. With just two weeks left until the end of the 2018 season, Fredonia currently sits at 5 and 1 on the year, after a good tough win against Belle Plaine last week winning 28 to 23. We spoke with coach Marc Svaty on his teams performance as he is very happy the way his guys have progressed through the season. Fredonia defense hasn’t been in question all season long but Svaty did mention his offense having to work in stressful scenarios to often. Losing the field position battle often and winning tough one possession games is wearing on the guys a bit. He looks for his defense to step up this week for some extra turnovers leading to easy scoring drives. The run game is always what Fredonia like to bring as they look to take down a very tough Douglass High School. Douglass comes in also only with one loss on the campaign as coach Svaty says they like to run the ball and have some of the more talented players to do so. He is expecting a shootout this Friday and has his guys prepared. Fredonia hosts Douglass this Friday from Fredonia High School kick off at 7 PM.

The West Elk High School Patriots return to the gridiron this Friday as they come back home after a tough loss last week against Cedar Vale Dexter. We talked with head coach of the Patriots Chris Haag on the Spartans of Cedar Vale Dexter as he was impressed with what they were able to do against his defense. He mentioned quite a few injuries the Patriots have had for a few weeks now having an affect but the Spartans are a tough team and just overpowered the Patriots last week. West elk will come back to their home turf this Friday to go up against the Flint Hills Mustangs who also currently wear a 1 and 5 record on the season. Coach Haag says this Mustangs team as with Cedar Vale Dexter is much bigger up front then them as the Mustangs like to run the ball straight up the middle. His guys are prepared for it and he is happy the way his young guys have stepped up each week as they have had to step in for more of the season then they expected. It’s almost been a month since the last Patriots victory as coach Haag says his guys are ready and hungry to get back to winning and if they can stay healthy and strong up front against the run game he’s confident they will. Game is at 7 PM at West Elk High School in Howard Kansas.

The Parsons Vikings return to the field this friday as they prepare for a battle. The Vikings who sit at 5 and 1 on the season will travel to Caney Valley to go aganoist the 5 and 1 Bullpups. We sat down with coach Kurt Freiss of the Vikings as he says him and his team knows what to expect from Caney Valley. A big, fast and physical team that runs the wishbone offense better than most. The Vikings have a very difficult finish to their season as coach Freiss did mention his concern to a few injuries that may spoil this Friday but is happy the way his depth guys are stepping up. He says the message at practice this week is if we don't continue to improve we’re going to get beat. Caney Valley has only lost to Galena this year who is the opposing team for the Vikings final game in 2 weeks so a tough road ahead for his guys to finish with one loss. Coach Freiss is confident though, told us that if his offensive and defensive line can win upfront to a very big and physical Caney Valley team, the Vikings have a good chance of taking one on the road against the Bullpups. It's been an interesting season for Labette County High School up to this point. With just two games remaining on the schedule the Grizzlies are undefeated(3-0) at home but winless(0-3) on the road. Head Coach Sean Price says it's just not where he thought they'd be this year. Friday night the Grizzlies jumped out to an early lead(20-7) but couldn't hold on to it losing 34-26 to Wellington.

Labette has a match up at home this Friday against 2-4 Ulysses before raping up the season at league rival Chanute.

The Red Ravens traveled to the western side of our state on Saturday to face off against the Conquistadors of Dodge City Community College. We expected a shootout in this game as both teams come in with a losing record and 2 straight losses and looking to get back in the winning track. Coffeyville returned QB Carson Proctor the the starting lineup as he is recovered from an earlier injury as he had a great game returning. Dodge City got off to a quick start with a 34 yard tip drill touchdown from QB Drew Harris followed an early second quarter field goal to go up 10 - 0. Proctor, who is more known as the pocket passer ran in the Ravens only score in the first half to cut the lead before halftime. Proctor finished with 62 yards on the ground which was close to be the leading rusher for Coffeyville. The only score in the 3rd quarter came off a great pass from Proctor to Thomas-Cobb to give the Ravens their first lead of the game. The 4th quarter is when things got interesting. After an early 4th field goals by Dodge the lead was cut 1 but Proctor lead the offense down the field throwing his second TD through the air to Kendrick Jones as he finished 19-27 for 201 yards and those 2 TDS. Down by 8 and only minutes on the clock Dodge City drove down the field and scored TD on 16 yard pass from Drew Harris then failed on the 2 point conversion. Dodge City had one last chance with a onside kick attempt which they converted giving them great field position for kicker Guillory to hit the game winner from 30 yards out. Red Ravens fall 22 to 21 to Dodge City, Homecoming game is this weekend as Coffeyville hosts Hutchinson this Saturday. You can catch that game on 98.1 KUSN.

The West Elk Patriots traveled to Cedar Vale Kansas to face of against the Spartans of Cedar Vale/Dexter for our High School Game of The Week on 104.1 KGGF. It was homecoming night for the Spartans and they did not disappoint. Scoring on all four of their first four offensive drives putting up a big spot on the Patriots early and finiding great success on the ground. QB Clayton Henderson and sophomore RB Brogan Myers both ran for multiple rushing touchdowns for Cedar Vale/Dexter and Myers ran for over 100 yards on the ground. As we spoke with coach Chris Haag of the Patriots earlier in the week he says some inexperienced play has been there weak point this year and it showed, turning the ball over on a couple of occasions and getting over powered in the trenches all game long. Now with a few minutes left in the 2nd quarter Cedar Vale/Dexter put up another score putting them up a total of 46 to 0 and bringing home the homecoming win with the mercy rule at halftime. Cedar Vale/Dexter moves to 5 and 1 on the year and will travel to Oswego for one of their final games of the year, and West Elk will head back home and battle Flinthills High School. Both games kick off at 7PM.

The Yellowjackets of Fredonia continue their dominant season today as they host the Belle Plaine Dragons. The Dragons come into Fredonia at 3 - 2 on the year though coach Marc Svaty of the Yellowjackets says his team can’t overlook them as they’ve won three straight games. Belle Plaine has had a very difficult schedule and some injuries, but are still a very good and physical team. Yellowjackets have a tough couple of weeks to finish out this season but Coach Svaty says if they can continue their dominant defensive play they look to finish with just 1 loss. They’ve shut out teams in both of the last two weeks and have shifted their identity to a defensive team. The offense operates well out of the wishbone formation and do a good job shredding time off the clock, though coach Svaty would like to see a few more points up on that scoreboard with the defense playing as well as they are. He thinks the yellow jackets are going to be a tough team to take down. Kick off at 7PM tonight from Fredonia High School.

The West Elk Patriots will have a tough test this Friday, looking for their first win since week one. Head coach Chris Haag says his team has had some injuries leading to some inexperienced play on the field, but has been happy with the progression of the younger guys. Scoring 44 points in last weeks loss to Oswego the Patriots look to continue that offensive success into Cedar Vale - Dexter. Patriots travel to Cedar Vale on Friday for a 7 PM kick off against the Spartans, as coach Haag says the Spartans have a lot of weapons to go to offensively, stating they have a very talented Quarterback and running back, so they will need to defend against both the pass and the run. Coach Haag says if his guys can control the game upfront, run the ball well and win the possession battle keeping their offense off the field, Haag thinks they will have some success. Defensively coach says his guys need to do their best to not give up the big plays, focus on tackles and get the opposing offense off the field. After a disappointing week five loss to Frontenac the Parsons Vikings look to bounce back against a struggling Columbus team. It was a close defensive battle against the Raiders of Frontenac but the Vikings couldn't quite pull out the victory losing 7-6. Coach Kurt Friess says they've got to clean some things up including mental mistakes as they had the game winning touchdown called back on a penalty.

Columbus is 1-4 on the season but they are coming off a win against Baxter Springs 52-14.

We spoke with head coach of the Labette County Grizzlies Sean Price on last week's game. Grizzlies fell to Fort Scott on the road 21 - 6 putting them winless on the road this year and 3 and 2 overall. Coach Price says the offense is all there, except one big part. A few injuries have led to the offensive line suffering and not allowing the blocks they need. Coach Price also noted that his guys need to do a better job of finishing drives, not committing mental mistakes, and scoring inside the redzone. If the team can execute those areas well this week they have a good chance of taking down a tough Wellington team. Wellington Crusaders will host the Grizzlies this Friday as coach Price says this is a very big team with a lot of strength. A big running back, and one of the better throwing QB’s they will face. Hoping to get one of their lineman back this week from injury is Coach Price and the Grizzlies as he says if they can win the battle upfront they have a good chance of taking down Wellington.
