Veterans Lead Red Ravens Softball to Strong Conference Start

Coffeyville Community College Softball is off to a strong start to their Jawhawk Conference schedule, going 2-2 last week.

The Lady Red Ravens have done it with the help of some of their best players. In the circle, they have depended on a trio of pitchers, says coach Ashton Friend.

Closer Katelynn Siess is one of three sophomores on this year's team. The other two are the leaders in their lineup.

Raya Eilert is hitting .479 in her second season, which is good for third-best in the entire conference. Fellow sophomore Kaylee Henderson has slugged seven home runs, third most in the Jawhawk.

Coach Friend is hopeful these Lady Red Raven veterans will get opportunities to play at four-year schools.

Nado Baseball Starts Season 1-0

Field Kindley High School baseball rallies late to beat Labette County 17-16.

Labette County jumped out to an early lead, scoring seven runs in the first inning eventually building a 15-9 lead after three. The Nado kept the game within striking distance and chipped away throughout scoring five in the first, outscoring Labette four to three in the second and answering Labette's five run third with two of their own. Coffeyville finally pulled even at 16 in the sixth, then took the lead moments later on a wild pitch that brought home Sam Stukesbary for the go-ahead run.

Field Kindley finished with just six hits to Labette County's 13, but The Nado's patience at the plate would be the difference in the game as they drew 21 walks. Stukesbary led the way for Field Kindley, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Jaxin Hershey added two hits. Hershey also earned the win in relief, tossing five innings.

Tuesday night’s NIT quarterfinal lived up to the hype, as Tulsa survived Wichita State 83-79.

The Shockers nearly made history, tying a program record with a 24-point comeback in the second half. They even took the lead with four minutes to go, but two key turnovers late turned the tide in favor of the Golden Hurricane.

It was the 148th all-time meeting between the two rivals, and the fourth this season.

Tulsa coach Eric Konkol talks about what he knew it would take to win.

For Wichita State, this concludes their third season under head coach Paul Mills. Their win total has improved each of those years; last night capped a 24-12 campaign.

Coach Mills on what this year’s squad has accomplished.

Tulsa moves on to its third-ever NIT Final Four, having won it all on its previous two trips. They’ll get a few days off, as the tournament moves to Indianapolis next Thursday. The Golden Hurricane will face New Mexico in the semifinal, which defeated St Joseph’s 84-69.

Wichita State and Tulsa to Meet in NIT Quarterfinal

Following their Sunday wins, Tulsa will host Wichita State on Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round of the National Invitation Tournament.

Top-seeded Tulsa advanced with a 77-66 win over UNLV. The Golden Hurricane snagged 18 offensive rebounds, dominating the boards with a +26 margin.

Meanwhile, Wichita State traveled to Stillwater to take on Oklahoma State. The Shockers outscored the Cowboys by 19 in the second half to prevail 96-70. Senior guard Kenyon Giles scored 28 points in the win.

That sets the stage for the fourth matchup this season between Tulsa and Wichita State. The American Athletic Conference foes split a pair of games in February, before Tulsa topped the Shockers 81-68 in the conference tournament semifinal.

Giles has had the Golden Hurricanes number this year, dropping a season-high 31 points in the February 14 installment, and has averaged 25 against them across three games.

The final meeting between the schools tips off at 6 p.m. on Tuesday; the game is televised on ESPN2.

The winner advances to the NIT final four in Indianapolis next week, facing either New Mexico or Saint Joseph's.

KU's Season Ends with Loss to St. Johns

Dylan Darling hit a driving layup as time expired for his only bucket of the game, and St. John’s blew a 13-point lead in the final minutes before advancing to its first Sweet 16 since 1999 with a 67-65 victory over Kansas.

Zuby Ejiofor and Bryce Hopkins scored 18 points apiece for the fifth-seeded Red Storm (30-6), who have roared back to college basketball prominence in just three seasons under coach Rick Pitino. Darling coolly won it after Kansas erased its 58-45 deficit with 7 1/2 minutes to play, making a furious 20-7 run capped by Darryn Peterson’s two free throws to tie it with 13.1 seconds left.

Peterson scored 21 points and Melvin Council Jr. had 15 points and nine rebounds for the fourth-seeded Jayhawks, who still haven’t returned to the Sweet 16 since they claimed Self’s second national title in 2022.

After Kansas ended Arizona’s unbeaten season in a landmark victory on Feb. 9, the Jayhawks subsequently lost six of their final 11 games.

Bill Self, 63-year-old Jayhawks head coach, is noncommittal about whether he will return for the 2026-27 season.

Area Schools All Advance in NIT

While not the premier college basketball tournament in March, the NIT has three area teams that all won their first round games. Wichita State, Tulsa, and Oklahoma State all advanced and will play again on Sunday.

On Tuesday night, Wichita State downed Wyoming 74-70 to move on. Freshman guard TJ Williams scored 17 points in just 18 minutes off the bench.

Their second round opponent will be nearby Oklahoma State, who advanced with an 84-80 win over Davidson. The Cowboys erased a 10-point halftime deficit to stay alive.

Lastly, Tulsa needed overtime to get by Stephen F. Austin, reigning 89-84. Another freshman was the hero there, as Jaylen Lawal led the team with 24 points, eight of which came in overtime.

The Golden Hurricanes will host UNLV on Sunday at 6 p.m. on ESPNU, while Oklahoma State welcomes Wichita State to Stillwater at 8:30 on ESPN2.

Both games are next to each other on the bracket, meaning there is potential for another local matchup in the NIT quarterfinal next week.

Royals Steal the Show in World Baseball Classic

While team Venezuela defeated the United States to win the 2026 World Baseball Classic, it was the Kansas City Royals who occupied much of the spotlight. In all, 14 Royals participated in the international tournament, including three from gold medalist Venezuela.

Third baseman Maikel Garcia was named MVP of the entire event, hitting .385 in seven games for Venezuela with seven runs batted in and three stolen bases. He played alongside two Royals teammates: catcher Salvador Perez and pitcher Luinder Avila.

Bobby Witt Jr. played six games at shortstop for the United States, where he captured the nation's attention with diving stops in the field.

Perhaps the surprise of the WBC was Italy's run all the way to the semifinals. Two mainstays in the Kansas City lineup helped power them there, in Jac Caglianone and Vinnie Pasquantino.

These players all return to Royals spring training as they prepare for opening day on March 27 in Atlanta against the Braves.
